    1. [ELFORD]Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [ELFORD]Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    1. [ELFORD]Introductions
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Jim (Pops) Jackson and have been given the privilege of acting as List Admin for the ELFORD List. I have been active with Rootsweb for nearly 20 years and have received great pleasure in doing so. I hope this message will help spur renewed activity with offers of helpful information, requests for help etc. Obviously this means that Rootsweb is back in active status after a period of difficulties that have been dealt with and needed upgrades made. If you have not already done so, you may register at https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/ and be able to see all the lists to which you are subscribed as well as control how your messages are delivered, etc. I hope to hear from you soon with your comments, information and questions. Best wishes, Jim

    1. [ELFORD] This List is Available for Adoption
    2. Ian Marr via
    3. Hello List members, My name is Ian Marr and I have been the list administrator for some time. However, due to mounting health problems, I am forced to give up this role. I have completed the task required to "orphan" the list, so it is now available for any of you to take the reins, so to speak. If you would like to become the administrator for this list, simply follow the steps details below: 1. Go to http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/adopt/ 2. Click on "Request a Mailing List - New or Adoption" 3. Complete the details, including your chosen password and submit the form. You will receive a confirmation e-mail when the necessary behind the scenes actions have been completed. You may then access the list as administrator, using your e-mail address and password specified in 3. above and make whatever changes you wish to the way the list operates. Samuel dropped the Elford surname & kept WEST, emigrated to Australia in 1859 on the "Lady Ann" with wife Mary Ann Thomas & children. Emma married John Cruett & they arrived Sth Australia 1864. Ann ELFORD was daughter of George & Mary of St Neot, and had a brother William born 1810. William had a son Geoge born c1810. I believe this George married Emma, and had 5 children. Author: jobelbin Surnames: Elford Howard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.elford/10.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great, great grandfather, (Walter Howard), may have been Winifred's great uncle as follows: Walter Howard was the brother or John Howard; John Howard was the father of Cora Jane Elford (nee Howard); Cora Jane Elford was the mother of Winifred Elford. Winifred was the eldest daughter of Frederick Elford and Cora Jane Elford (nee Howard). Gwendoline Elford was Winifred's younger sister; they also had three brothers: Victor Howard Elford (b. 20 February 1902), Leslie Howard Elford (b. 18 July 1904) and Frederick Howard Elford (b. 1 March 1908). All five children were born in Coleford, Devon, England. Cora Jane's maiden name was given as the middle names for all three boys, (a tradition that anther of Cora Jane's sisters (Emily Dummett (nee Howard)) applied to her four children. Winifred (aged fourteen years) and Gwendoline (aged 10 years) left Southampton on 24 September 1920 on a ship called the Scandinavian. They arrived in Quebec on 3 October, with their destination listed as Peterborough, Ontario. Both girls were part of the child immigration scheme (Home Children) via the Barnardo's charity. Cora Jane was listed as the nearest living relative on the girls' passenger declaration forms. This is interesting as I don't know why their father wasn't listed? I'm assuming that he had passed away, which is why the girls were put forward by their mother, (although I haven't been able to find a death reference for their father, Frederick Elford). Two of Winifred's brothers ended up living in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Whilst Frederick (jnr.) remained in Devon until his death in 1995 as did Winifred's mother until her death in 1973. Gwendoline returned to England in June 1934, returning to the same home that they had left fourteen years' earlier; 24 Dean Street, Crediton, Devon, England. (The house is still there, so you can view it on Google Earth). I have plenty more information about the Howard family; many still live in mid-Devon such as my Aunt, (if related would be your 3rd cousin once removed), who'll hopefully I'll be visiting in a couple of weeks. This was possibly her mother's maiden name? My grandmother was Violet Florence Storey, and she was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Nonember 28th, 1881. I know her father was William Trench Storey, who spent most of his life in or around Toronto. My Father was William Murray Doherty. Violet had a brother Murray Storey and a sister Alice Birks (nee Storey)...do you know of these relatives? or any more history? My father made out quite a geneological table but it is sometimes hard to decipher. Do you think we may be related somehow?
