JOHN 5 ELDRED (HOLDEN 4, THOMAS 3, JOHN 2, SAMUEL 1), BORN 1754; married Huldah --, before 1797; his date of death is unknown. John Eldred was a wheelmaker in South Kingstown. Records of October 1, 1790 show that he deeded property in that town to his mother Mercy "Marcy" who was a widow at that time. John was living in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY, on December 25, 1797. Children, surname Eldred: 560. i. Peleg, born 5 April 1783, probably at Scituate, RI; died 7 June 1846, Vestal, NY, buried in Choconut, PA; married Sarah Wilson. 561. ii. Daniel, born ca 1784 in Rhode Island; died 15 September 1834, Barre, NY; married Susanna Coffin. 562. iii. Umphrey, born 1 March 1785, married first, Olive Montgomery, and second Priscilla Hall. 563. iv. George, married Sarah Stevens. 564. v. Zephaniah, born December 1789 in Vermont; died 1 October 1869, Owego, NY; married Julia Ann Hale, He served in the War of 1812. 153. HOLDEN 4 ELDRED (THOMAS 3, JOHN 2, SAMUEL 1), born after 1726 and before 1738; died 28 May 1784, South Kingstown, RI; married March "Mercy" ____. Holden Eldred purchased land in South Kingstowne on February 20, 1758. He also owned land in Exeter. He was made a freeman in 1759. Records show that his occupation was a "linen wheel maker." At the time of his death he had six parcels of land in South Kingstowne, totaling 128 acres. Widow Marcy Eldred and seven of her nine children moved to Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY about 1795 -- two married daughters remained in South Kingstown. Children surname Eldred: 261 i. JOHN 2 ELDRED, born 17 Aug 1659, probably at Chelsea, MA; died 17 September 1724, age 65 years, North Kingstown; married Margaret Holden Dungan (January 1663-1740) daughter of Randall and Frances (Latham Dungan. Frances was the daughter of Lewis Latham, the Falconer to Charles I of England. John Eldred's family moved to Rhode Island when he was a year old and he grew up in the Narraganset Colony. He married Elizabeth Miller, 25 November 1640, in Ipswich. The Parish Register,Saint Mary-at Kay's, Ipswich reads, "Nov. 25, 1640, Married, Samuel Eldred of Ipswich, cordwainer, an Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel Miller, of Needham Market." Samuel died between 13 April 1697 and 12 February 1699, in the town of Kingstowne, Rhode Island. Samuel and Elizabeth (Miller) Eldred appear in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1641--according to one surce they had left Bristol, England on March 23, 1641 oon the ship "Tiger" bound for Boston. Other Eldreds were in the new world during the early colonization period--Robert in Plymouth (1639) and William in Yarmouth, Massachusetts (1642); John in Hampton, New Hampshire (1640); Nathaniel in Windsor, Connecticut (1644); John in New Jersey (1670) and Thomas in Virginia (1648). In documents of the time the surname is usually spelled Eldred, Eldredge or Eldridge. Samuel and his family spent their first years in America in the Massachusetts Bay Colony living in various places near Boston, Cambridge, Charlestown, Chelsea and Medford. At first he was a shoemaker and later he farmed rented land. In 1660 the family moved to Stonington, Connecticut, and later to Wickford oon the western shore of Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island where many of Samuel's descendants lived for the next hundred years. As a constable in Wickford, under the Authority of Connecticut, Samuel was in the very center of the political troubles of the Narrangansett Colony and this caused him much grief. given below, in chronological order, are the recorded facts concerening Samuel as this seems to be the most effectives means of portraying his life......(to much to type). In the index, there are other references to the name Peleg. I believe that some of these families ended up in New York and did change their name to Eldridge. I remember typing the census for New York (Eldridge archives) and when I came across the name Peleg - it was such an unusual name. Donna
