ROLFE2 ELDRIDGE JR. (Rolfe1) was born in 1780 at Buckingham Co., VA (_________, "William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine," Third, Vol 20 #4 (Apr 1912).) (_________, "Pocahontas Trails Quarterly," no series, Vol 3 #1 Jan 1985.). He married Mary Moseley, daughter of Benjamin Moseley Lt. and Mary Branch, on 16 Dec 1808 at probably Buckingham, VA (_________, "Quarterly", XX, p. 206.). He died on 13 May 1861 at Buckingham Co., VA. He was buried circa 16 May 1861 at "Rolfton", Buckingham Co., VA (Compiled by Janice J.R. Rolfton was owned by the Eldridges , it is east of Buckingham CH. After leaving the Eldridge Farm going toward Buckingham after you cross the Slate River. During Thos. M. Eldridge, Sr.'s life time it was owned by Fitzgerald Henderson, now owned by Carl M. Henshaw of Richmond. Rolfe and Mary made Rolfeton their home in 1808. He was Clerk of Buckingham Co. for 52 years, Rolfe Eldrdige succeeded his father as Clerk of Buckingham County. He was clerk from 1806 to 1859. He had entered his father's office in 1795 at the age of 15, and in 1797 qualified as Deputy Clerk. He was appointed to succeed his father and immediately moved nearer the court house as a convenience for attending to the business which was rapidly increasing. He was Clerk from 1806 to 1859. He died in the spring on 1861. Attending to the preparation of the most important entries himself, he was possessed of a wonderful facility in laying out ordered to meet special cases under new laws. He gave his personal attention to every detail of his office and to the presentation of the work of the courts. He had great influence in the county as well as among his contemporaries. He declined reelection in 1858 and was succeeded by his son-in-law Robert K. Irving. Eldridge was devoted to his family, friends, and church, and was an earnest member of the old school Presbyterian Church between 1806 and 1859 at Buckingham Co., VA (_________, "Quarterly", XX, p. 206-207.) He lived circa 1857 at "Greenway', Moseley, Buckingham, VA; John was a farmer at Moseley, Buckingham Co., VA. John lost his house and farm called Greenway after the civil war, when his taxes were raised higher and higher. Greenway was on a hill or ridge above the James River east of Lynchburg about 10 miles past the 6 mile bridge, RR bridge over the river. The house was two stories, weatherboard about 6" wide. Thomas M. Eldridge, Sr. said when he was growing up it was owned by his cousin Ben Eldridge, who kept it rented. Greenway was about 300 to 400 acres and the house was at the top of Spears Mtn. (or Willis Mtn.).
