Pages 92-93 _________________________________________________________________ Ship: SEA BIRD Type: Steamer Arrived: August 20, 1852 From: San Diego, California Captain: Haley Passage: 4 days from San diego, California. This vessel has on board a number of passengers (224) of the disabled steamer "Pioneer". On her passage around Cape Horn, and while in the Bay of Talcahuano coaling, the "Pioneer" dragged her anchors in a gale of wind and ran on a reef, causing a leak. The leak increased on the passage to Panama to such an extent as to require pumps to be kept in constant operation. The vessel, however, proceeded to San Juan del sur, Nicaragua, taking on board at that place a full compliment of passengers. After departing from Acapulco, Mexico the vessel ran out of coal and two of the flanges of her propeller had been carried away. In this crippled condition-without coal, and without propelling power, the "Pioneer" was overtaken by a heavy Northwest gale. The steamer took on water so fast that it was necessary for the preservation of lives to run the ship into shelter. She accordingly put into St. Simon's Bay (St. Simons Bay), about 200 miles south of San Francisco. To prevent her sinking the "Pioneer" was run on shore. A messenger was dispatched to San Luis Obispo, California to intercept steamers. The "Sea Bird" fortunately passed the area on August 18, 1852 and a contract was made to take on board a load of the crippled steamer's passengers, with the intention of returning for the balance. The following deaths occurred on board the "Pioneer" up to the point of her disablement": April 30, 1852 - William Thompson, of New York City May 2, 1852 - George Bradley, of New Jersey, of fever May 4, 1852 - James Lawson of Ohio A.
