ELDREDGE - July 10, 1852 - Panama > San Francisco, California Ship: TENNESSEE Type: Steamship Arrived: July 10, 1852 Captain: George Totten Passage: 16 days from Panama, via Acapulco, Mexico and San Diego, California. Departed Panama on June 24, 1852. Arrived at Acapulco on June 30th. Took on board coal, provisions and 104 destitute passengers rom "Russel", brig "Amphytrite" and brig "Isabella Hermosa"*. Sailed from Acapulco at midnight on July 1, 1852. On July 3rd, at 10:30AM, spoke and boarded steamer "Golden Gate", about 60 miles to the north and west of Cape Corrientas. On July 6th, spoke steamer "Pacific", in lat. 27 15N., long. 115 45 W. Arrived in San Diego at 5:00AM on July 8th, exchanged mails and sailed at 9:30AM. The following deaths took place during the passage: June 30 - Solomon Keller, aged 2 years, 4 months July 3 - Andrew Ring, Rhinebeck, Duchess County, N.Y., aged 32 years July 3 - Herman Kurfman, of New York, aged 37 years July 4 - Joseph Bliss, of New York, aged 31 years July 4 - Charles Lopez, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, aged 38 years July 5 - Benjamin Ward, Newburgh, New York, aged 36 years July 7 - Jno. Andrews, of Niagara, Canada West, aged 54 years July 8 - M. J. Clanton, of New Orleans, Louisiana, aged 26 years July 8 - Mrs. Nancy Moody, Cincinnati, Ohio, aged 30 years July 9 - Jno. Purcey, from Ireland, aged 30 years July 9 - Julius Poor, of New Orleans, Louisiana, aged 9 years There was an unusual amount of deaths on board the "Tennesse". In fact, a larger mortality than on all her previous trips coombined. A rumor circulated that the deaths were due to holera. However, the ship surgeon, Dr. __ McNaughtonm stated this was incorrect. In every instance the patients had been attacked with fever, accompanied with dysentery. Many were passengers, taken on board from Acapulco, who were actually worn down by destitution and want. The captain of the "Tennessee" took on board one hundred and four of the passengers who had been thrown into the port of Acapulco and were unable to proceed any farther.
