I read, I think on the Roots-L list, a notice of Eldridge reunion at Bauxite, Saline Co., Arkansas,Oct. 19,1997. Is anyone out there going? Will there be anything about this reunion published? I cannot go, my daughter is getting married that week-end. She probably wouldn't understand how I could go any place else but to her wedding. Dear Friends, I am reaching the end of the road for my family research. I have in front of me the daunting task of finding my grandfather's family. My grandfather changed his name at some point from Eldridge to Peterson. We are left with very few facts which I will lay out below. It is very sad for the family that this mystery has not been solved. If you can help my work with genealogy will be complete. Name: Charles Christopher Eldridge DOB: February 20, 1870 POB: Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia Supposedly had a brother named William and two sisters. Father remarried and he disliked his step-mother. Left home as a teenager with his brother, Will. Was married prior to marrying my grandmother, Jennie Mae Sharp, in Illinois. That is all we know. Eldredge, born 1876 in Ida Grove, Iowa. He married-Margaret Crone-born 1880 in Deep River, Iowa.Their children are as follows: Fern Matilda Eldredge-Born 2-13-1897 Mavys Genevieve Eldredge-Born 1-27-1898 Myrle Selwyn Eldredge-Born 2-19-1900 Joseph Marvin Eldredge-Born 4-19-1902 Maxwell Elvin Eldredge-Born 2-26-1904 Adna Dwight Eldredge-Born 4-11-1906 As far as I know, these aunts and uncles of mine have all passed away now. Fredrick Hoyt Eldred is my 3rd great grandfather. I have limited information about him and his wife Sarah. Sarah is Sarah Augusta Sutherland, b. Augusta, Kennebec County, ??, USA; d. circa 1882, Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado. Sarah is dau to Eric Sutherland and Rachel Seeley. I am researching ELDRIDGE, in the Tonbridge area of Kent, England, - though anecdotal evidence suggests that there may be connections in the West Malling areas of Kent, not far from Maidstone! (More recent generations settled in the Norbury, West Norwood, and Streatham areas of South London). My research, as you can see from the information below, does not yet reach back to Rpre-1800S - though there may of course be a link in somebody's researches. To set the scene: My Mother, Enid Marion ELDRIDGE was the youngest Daughter of Percy ELDRIDGE, he died on 11th November 1931, aged 57,(buried at Streatham vale Cemetery). He was born in 1873 or 1874 - more on this later! Percy ELDRIDGE married Florence Emma SANDS, on 1st July at St. Stephens Church, Tonbridge, (she was living at 21, High Street, Tonbridge at the time, he at 13, Edith Road , South Norwood). (Note: I am in contact with descendants of Florence Emma SANDS, in Tonbridge (in particular Mrs Jenny Savage)- they are aware of present day ELDRIDGES living in their locale!). According to their Marriage Certificate Percy ELDRIDGE was the son of John ELDRIDGE (RGentleman FarmerS)- but here my researches grind to a halt, since all the direct offspring of Percy and Florence are now dead, and documents have disappeared! This means that so far I have been unable to find a verifiable birth certificate/place of birth for Percy ELDRIDGE, despite much searching! Perhaps someone can help me fill in this information gap! One intriguing area of research on the IGI led me to a long standing relationship (for want of a better word!) between a John ELDRIDGE and Harriett FELLOWS, who between them had at least 8 children, listed below: Thomas ELDRIDGE born 6th Jan 1845, Udimore, Sussex John ELDRIDGE born 29th Sept 1846 Icklesham, Sussex Philadelphia ELDRIDGE born 26th May 1850 Ann ELDRIDGE born 5th July 1852 Icklesham,Sussex Robert ELDRIDGE born 26th June 1855 ditto Alfred Edward ELDRIDGE born 23rd Nov. 1858 ditto William Eldridge born 25th June 1863 There may, of course, be other children!!......... As you can see, there is no mention of a Percy ELDRIDGE, so this information may be of more use to someone else than me! Sorry this is so lengthy. I am looking for any information on WILLIAM S. ELDREDGE and his family. From his headstone: b. 1863, d. 1899, buried Marlin, Falls Co., TX. Cemetery records destroyed by fire 1910, oldest funeral home would not even consider looking for any records. Could not find anything in County records except for marriage to Jonnie Powers, Feb. 10, 1897. They had one son, William Ward Eldredge, b. Dec. 25, 1897. A business card shows WILLIAM S. ELDREDGE, Ticket Agent for Texas Pacific Railroad. (William Ward Eldredge is my step-dad's father and the family never talked about William S. Eldredge so there is nothing at all known about him.) I found some family of OTIS ELDREDGE, (d. 1898 in Edgar, IL.) living in Sherman, Grayson Co., IL. There were five sons. 1. Harvey b.1848 d.1937 came from Paris, Il. in 1874 by train to Grayson Co., TX 2. Martin Davis b. 1852 or 1857 d 1919 came to Grayson Co. 1900 3. Otis Jr. Don't know about the other two brothers. The story of their family was as follows: Three brothers were immigrants from Scotland in early 1700's. One brother remained in New York and the other two came south by pack mule. One of them settled in Ohio and the other settled in Tennessee. From there the descendants came to Illinois. I thought since WILLIAM S ELDREDGE was in Grayson Co., he might be related to this family.
