    1. [ELDRIDGE-L] WHERE HAVE THEY GONE? (SSDI PROJECT)
    2. Good Morning, Over the past several years I have worked on several projects for the ELDRED/ELDREDGE/ELDRIDGE families. In the Eldridge-L archives I have posted the complete census index for the United States, DAR, Revolutionary War, Civil War, Indian Wars, Marriages, Mayflower Index, Immigrants, Tidbits, etc. I am now working on the SSDI project, which is truly fascinating. What I am doing, is taking the Social Security Death Index (rootsweb.com) and printing it out and sorting it by 1) Issued, and 2) Last Residence. From there, I am typing it and sorting it by County of Last Residence for each state. To get each name on a line, I have not included the Social Security Number. It will include - Last Name, First Name, Birth, Death, (Last Residence), and Issued. I think this puts an umbrella on the Eldred/Eldredge/Eldridge/Eledge/Elledge research for us. I am also hoping that this project will help me to find the descendants of the Eldridge family that I am working on and try to find where they have gone to. I have been working on this for a couple of months and I will start with our favorite state - Massachusetts. Donna

    2. Hi Chris, Source: "William Eldred of Yarmouth, Masshuetts" by Nelson B. Eldred III 268. AMOS 5 ELDREDGE (Salathiel 4, Elnathan 3, Jehosophat 2, William 1) born 13 november 1759, New Bedford, MA; died 12 August 1807, New Bedford; married Mercy Cook, born 19 July 1759, died 10 December 1815. He was removed to Dartmouth about 1740, and died 1746 at New York City. He was a mariner. On 20 February 1746/7, jis eldest son Isaiah, "being bound to sea: requested that his stepmother be appoint administrator. She was approved 28 March 1747, presented inventory, 17 June 1747; Benj. JEHOSOPHAT 2 ELDRED (William 1), born c 1658, Yarmouth, MA, died 1732, Chatham, MA; married c1690, Elizabeth Covell, daughter of Nathaniel 1 and Sarah (Nickerson) Covell. He settled on a portion of the old Nickerson or Srah Covell farm at Chathamport, MA, the homestead being the same location as Nathaniel Covell's homestead. After Jehosophat's death, his children divided their parent's home, calling it the "Old Covell House," It stood on the west side of Crowe's Pond just as you go on to Eldredge's Neck. It is possible that Jehosophat and his bride set up housekeeping in her father's house. That Jehosophat's wife was Elizabeth is shown by his will, and by the birth record of their son Edward. His will dated 9 February 1731/2; proved 29 November 1732, shows that he owned land at Red River Neck, which he gave to his son Elisha; a neck of land at Chathamport, called "Short Neck"; a meadow at Ragged Neck; a meadow at Matchapocett; and woodland near Red River. Elisha released his interest to his brother Ebenezer, 27 May 1737. Elizabeth Eldredge, spinster, released here interest to Ebenezer, "excepting her right in the dwelling, " 27 July 1758. Jehosophat was a carpenter; he served in King Philip's War, 1695-6, and for his services was granted land in Narragansett Township No. 7, now Gorham, Maine. Children, surname ELDREDGE. 22 i. Elizabeth, born 1712, Chatham; married after 27 July 1758, Obed Hathaway. ---- WILLIAM ELDRED, The Immigrant 1. WILLIAM ELDRED was born c1618, possibly in Winfarthing (3 miles from New Buckenham), Norfolk County, England, the son of Robert and Anne (Garnham) Eldred. William arrived in Old Yarmouth, MA c1642 and married Anne Lumpkin some time during the periof of 1645-1647. She was the daughter of William and Tamesin Lumpkin of Norwich, Norfolk County, having come over to New England with her parents in 1637. Her father was one of the original settlers of Yarmouth and occupied many positions of responsibility. William Eldred died in November 1679; Anne ws buried on 1 November 1676. their graves have not been located and it is quite possible that the grave markers are no longer in existence. Many of the descendants of William beame prominent and influential in the affairs of the Town of Yarmouth. There are not many records concerning William Eldred that remain today. He was in Yarmouth in March 1645 and 1647. William and his wife Anne settled on the farm near Anne's father adjoining the farm of Thomas Howes. There house was near a brook, later called "Eldred's Brook" in what is now Dennis, near Nobscussett. During the years 1657, 1662, 1674, 16175, and 1677, William was Constable and Highway Surveyor. In March 1668/1669 William sold land in Yarmouth to Joseph Hall. In 1676 William paid approximately three pounds tax for King Philips War. There is no record of Willliam after 1679 and it can be believed that he died about that time. There is no real proof that the last six children belonged to William and Anne Eldred. It is believed that children did belong to them and therefore are listed as probable children. Children of William and Anne (Lumpkin) Eldred, all born at Yarmouth: 2. i. Anne, born 16 December 1648. 3. ii. Sarah, born 10 October 1650. 4. iii. Elisha, born 1653, died 14 October 1739. 5. iv. Bethia, mentioned in her Grandfather Lumpkins will, dated July 23, 1668, as being under 20 years of age. 6. v. Jehosophat, born c 1658. 7. vi. Samuel, born about 1655. 8. vii. John, moved to Wells, Maine 9. viii. Ezekiel. Moved to Cape May, New jersey in 1711 and founded the New Jersey Eldreds. 10.ix. Thomas 11. x. Mary Note: Comparatively few of the descendnts have retained the original form of ELDRED. Most of them spell the name ELDRIDGE or ELDREDGE. -------------------------- Further information on William Eldred and Anne Lumpkin and their families can be found in the Eldridge-L archives at Rootsweb. The book "William Eldred of Yarmouth, Massachusetts" can be obtained from Joan Eldred, 2885 Pine Grove Court, Marietta, GA 30067 - $30.00. I have all four of Nelson Eldred's books, and I do treasure them. Donna

    3. In Mr. Eldred's books, does he discuss any of the family that retained the original "Eldred" spelling? My family is "Eldred" and I have not been able to make much progress with them over the years. In case there may be some Eldred information in your books, is there any mention of Frederick Hoyt Eldred (b. 1826 d. 1910) m to Sarah Augusta Sutherland (d. 1883)? I think these people dropped out of the sky and landed in Colorado! Thanks, Lori Williams DELDRIDGE1@aol.com wrote: > Hi Chris, > > Source: "William Eldred of Yarmouth, Masshuetts" by Nelson B. Your David Eldridge b 1854 ,the son of John Eldridge b abt 1834 and Phillis ( surname unknown) b abt1837 and his siblings seem to be missing. My John was the son of Edmund Eldridge 1802-1878 and Hannah Wood-Adams 1799-1883. David (1875/6) had siblings :- Catherine b abt 1862 Lydia b abt 1866 Prisilla b abt 1869 Caleb b abt 1878 Jonathan b abt 1881 Is this comparable to your information? 3. I can no longer keep quiet -- this is too peculiar. For years I have been looking for information on my 3rd great grandfather - George Albert Eldridge, born 1854 in Vermont - and his father George William Eldridge. The story goes that Geo. Wm. married Orpha Jane Prentiss and died just before baby geo. Albert was born. Or, if you choose story #2, Geo. Wm. never married Orpha Jane and ran off to the Calif. gold fields. Someone in the family thought Geo. Wm. was a doctor, but that is unproven as is nearly everything else about these people, other than that Geo. Albert ended up in Wisconsin. Any knowledge of my Eldridges? Thanks! 3. I have a reply for the William George Eldridge from Sussex England. My ggreatgrandfather David William Eldridge was born in Sussex England on August 11, 1876 and came to Wisconsin later. His father's name was David Eldridge who was born on September 9, 1854 in Sussex England. His father's name was John Eldridge from Sussex also. The names sound familiar to your post, just wandering if there might be a relation a couple of generations up the tree. One of my ggreatgrandfather's brothers names was Albert George Eldridge. My family had a great tendency like others to name their children after relatives. I hope this might help.
