Hello Howard -- Sorry to be so long in getting back to you. The Elam family has a coat of arms. I have uploaded a copy of it to my website. You will find a link to it at the bottom of my main page at www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/6831 I came across some information on it in a heraldry or peerage book (I think maybe Burke's) many years ago, but have lost the copy I made of it and haven't yet been able to find it again. As I recall, the information was very sketchy. As for information on the family in England, none of us know very much. There have been fairly recent findings concerning the christening dates of a Gilbert and Martin Elam in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire. It is believed that these may be two of the the immigrant Elams who came over in the early 1600s, although the evidence is only circumstantial. By this I mean that the dates are a good fit and it would appear to be somewhat more than coincidental that there were two brothers named Martin and Gilbert who came from the area of Yorkshire where it is believed the family originated. There has not, however, been any definitive link made to date. There are also a couple of possible candidates in the same area who could have been the immigrant Robert, but nothing definite there either. I'm sorry I can't be of any more help. Quite a few of us are working on the origins of Robert, Gilbert, Martin and Richard (an 18th century Elam immigrant). If you happen to have come across any additional information, we would all very much like to hear about it. Good luck with your research. Cassie
