Barry -In your post below, you have that Elizabeth, widow of Gilbert Elam, and mother of Josiah and Keziah, married Archelaus Nunnally and that Elizabeth may have had the maiden name "Scott." Also, that Keziah Elam may have married James F. Nunnally. One of the many problems with Elam research is missing marriage records. The marriage records of Chesterfield County begin in 1771. Powhatan County marriage records begin in 1777. The gap between the formation of Chesterfield County, in 1749 and the 1771 date for existing marriage records causes many headaches. In his 1933 book, "The Elam Family" with Special Reference to Josiah Elam and His Descendants, Harvey Elam wrote, regarding Gilbert Elam, Jr., "I am very sorry that I have been unable to learn more about Elizabeth Elam, his wife, or Keziah Elam, his daughter. It is said that Elizabeth Elam afterwards married Archelaus Nunnally, a resident of Powhatan County, VA. Her subsequent history is unknown to me." Note the word "said" in Harvey Elam's paragraph. Archelaus Nunnally was the son of John Nunnally. John Nunnally's daughter Jane married a Gilbert Elam - but not the Gilbert who was father to Josiah and Keziah. At present, all I am aware of for the Gilbert Elam who fathered Josiah and Keziah is: "Chesterfield County Will Book 1, page 238: Will of Gilbert Elam, dated 18 Dec 1755: Wife, Elizabeth; to have use of plantation for widowhood and profits therefrom to maintain and educate my childred. Son Josiah to have possession of his estate at 18. Land I hold in right of my wife Elizabeth, 150 acres on Third Branch, and 1 negro, to remain in her possession for life. To son Josiah, 150 acres on Third Branch. To daughter Keziah Elam, 1 negro. Executors: wife and brother James Elam. Witness: Thomas More, Edward Friend, Jr., Thomas Friend, Jr." "Chesterfield County OB 2, page 219: Court 3 September 1756: Will of Gilbert Elam, Jr., presented by Elizabeth, the widow and executrix, proved by Edward Friend, Jr., and Thomas Moore." "Chesterfield County OB 2, page 233: Court 5 November 1756: Inventory of Gilbert Elam returned." I am hoping that there's a record somewhere to prove the remarriage of Josiah's mother, Elizabeth, and also possibly a record of the fate of Keziah Elam. Can you tell me the source of your information re: Elizabeth and Keziah? Thanks in advance, Annette Elam Wetzel.
