Kay: You are not off base by any means. Although I do not have a Ferguson line, Farguson could just as easily be Ferguson, Fargason or Fargasson. These spellings appear in the Henrico Co VA will books and are the same family and often the same individuals. Early documents often spelled surnames several ways in the same document. They knew who they and everyone else knew who they were so, I guess, the spelling didn't matter at all that much.
