    3. Do any of you Texas Elam researchers have information on John Elam who was one of Stephen F. Austin's "Old 300" settlers. He was a warded a grant of one league in 1824 in what is now Washington County. The grant was on the west side of the Brazos River beginning at Samuel Miller's lower corner and vacant lands on the other sides. He is described in the grant only as a native of the United States and a resident of Texas, but because there was a John P. Elam in Texas at the time, I believe that they were the same man and that he was John Pamplin Elam whose brother William Jefferson Elam also was in Texas during that era on the Ayis Bayou near San Augustine. John Elam's grant was declared forfeited by the Ayuntamiento of San Felipe in 1830, and deeds in Washington County indicate that Thomas Barnett acquired the land, then later sold it (before his death in the 1840s). I have documents from the General Land Office and from Washington County on the transactions. Also, last week in Washington County deeds I found with the land grant documents where a "John Ealam" in Jasper County on 13 June 1837 sold a league of land on the Brazos in what is now Washington County to Stephen H. Everitt. This land was bounded on the east by the Brazos, on the north by the heirs of Rogers, on the west by "Kerkendals" (Kuyendall) lands, and on the west and south by Joel Lakey's land. If I am right and John Elam who received the grant was John Pamplin Elam, he settled in Sabine County, LA in the 1830s. Does anyone know if he ever lived in what is now Jasper county. The Washington County deeds have no more on him. I will appreciate any information about John Elam. I have a section about his dealings in Texas in a chapter of my book, nearly completed, on my line of Elams: Ancestors and descendants of John H. Elam of Mississippi and Texas (descended from William Elam of Charlotte County, VA (ca. 1734-1809). Thanks for your help. Earl Elam
