Hi, For some time, I was lead to believe that my ggggrandfather was Daniel Elam. That is not correct. I even made several posts to that effect. I have since discovered that he is in fact John Elam. On December 5, 1835, John married Martha Yancey, daughter of Charles Yancey, by a Rev. John B. Smith in Mecklenburg county VA. Sometime before 1850, he moved to Granville county, NC where he is found residing next to a Richard T. Elam (son of Daniel, son of Peter, son of Joel) in the 1850 census. I find John and Martha in Iredell county, NC in 1860 and 1870. In 1880, Martha is alone in Iredell county with her youngest children and some of the older children are now married and residing in the county. John has died abt. 1875. A Will is probated about this time for him. John and Martha had the following children: (the grandchildren listed are from the 1880 census, I have not researched any farther yet) Mary, born abt. 1836 Elizabeth, born abt. 1844 (married to a Johnson?) Silas, born abt. 1847; married to Tabitha (?) (children Olla R. born abt. 1872; James born abt. 1875; Augustus, born abt. 1877) Martha, born abt. 1849 Nannie or Nancy, born abt. 1851 (married to a Saffriet or Saffrit) John Daniel, born 2/14/1852; died 7/25/1933 THIS IS WHO I DESCEND THROUGH Isabella or Arabella, born abt. 1853; married to Calvin C. Stroud (children Augustus E. born abt. 1872; Della M. born abt. 1880) Richard, born abt. 1855; married to Mary G. (?) (children Opha, born abt. 1879) Charles, born abt. 1859 Rowland, born abt. 1861 Alice, born abt. 1864 (married to a Wallace) Is anyone researching any of these people. I would love to know more about them. I would also like to discover who John's parents are. I am suspicious that John may be the youngest son of Peter Elam (son of Joel) in Mecklenburg Co. VA. The time and place is correct. Could someone shed some light on this for me. There are also these following coincidences that lead me to this conclusion: 1. Peter's oldest son is Daniel. He has two daughters, Susan and Mary Ann. They both marry Yancey men. Susan marries Reason P. Yancey and Mary Ann marries Alexander, both sons of Charles Yancey. Also, there is some conection to a Daniel from family recollection. We were once lead to believe that my John Daniel's father was named Daniel. 2. My John Elam marries Martha Yancey, daughter of Charles, sister to Reason and Alexander. 3. The same minister marries all three couples, John B. Smith in Mecklenburg County, VA. They all come from the same area and it seems they all attended church together. 4. In 1850, John and Martha Elam are residing in Granville county, NC alongside Richard T. Elam, oldest son of Daniel Elam of Mecklenburg County, VA. 5. Granville Co. NC is right across the border from Mecklenburg Co. VA. 6. The names of all the children of these families mirror each other, this was something I was told that the Elams did. I would enjoy hearing from anyone on this matter, Thanks in advance, Kent Elam
Am looking for the parents and siblings of Elizabeth ELAM b. early 1700s probably in VA. She married Richard CHURCH. The only child of Richard CHURCH and Elizabeth ELAM that I have found is Elizabeth CHURCH b c 1759 in Halifax Co., VA; m. Robert JORDAN, SR. c 1778 in Halifax Co., VA; d. 1831, probably in Halifax Co., VA. Any leads on Elizabeth ELAM's parents and siblings would be appreciated. Doug Scroggs Lee's Summit, MO

Does anyone know anything about the Elam cemetery in Nashville, TN? I just got information that Francis Vannerson (d. 1 March 1864) was buried there. He married Elizabeth Elam (b. 1812, Rutherford Co., TN) ) in 1832 in Rutherford Co., TN. I believe she was the daughter of Daniel and Jane Elam. She lived with her brother Henry Elam in Nashville for a time and then, when her two sons who survived the war returned home, moved with them to Calvert City, KY, where she died in 1884. Francis and Elizabeth Elam Vannerson had three sons who fought for the Confederacy and the youngest, Francis Theodore, died in the war. He was born in 1844 and I have his date of death as 1 March 1864, the same as his father's -- ???. It could well be that he's also buried in the Elam cemetery so I hope some of you Elam cousins have information about this burying ground. Kate Lykins

It sounds as if it might be James Easter Elam. 'Tho I don't know what happened to James Easter Elam, very few of the early Elams remained in the areas of Lunenburg, Charlotte, or Mecklenburg Counties after 1830. James Easter Elam was born between 1790 and 1799 - probably closer to 1790. He married Polly Hurt on 20 Oct 1812 in Mecklenburg County. Do you have a will for him? If no, it might be useful to look for a will in Alabama. Also to look for associated family groups who may have immigrated to Alabama, since people rarely travelled to a new location totally alone. He had a sister named Charlotte who married Daniel Callis in 1813. According to his father's will, James Easter was to inherit his father's property after the death of his mother. The date and conditions under which that property was sold might give a clue as to whether he moved from this area. I, for one, would be interested in knowing more about him. Let us know on the list what you learn! Annette Elam Wetzel On Wed, 17 Jan 1996 22:31:41 -0800 "Billy R.Evans" <"brevans@cctc.net"@cctc.net> writes: >I'm searching for any information about James E. In a recent Journal of the Chesterfield County Historical Society, I saw this heading: "A Sampling of Criminal Causes from the County Court of Chesterfield 1752-1806." One of the cases listed was: "1767 - The King vs. Matthew Turpin for assault and battery against Mary Elam." Looked it up in the VA State Archives and found not one, but two separate cases involving Mary Elam. The record of court proceedings apparently no longer exist, and there is nothing in the court order books. These "loose papers" were found in the Chesterfield (VA) County Clerk's office and microfilmed a few years ago. They consist mainly of warrents and bail bonds written on small pieces of paper in beautiful Victorian script. Hard to read, though! Hello Howard -- Sorry to be so long in getting back to you. The Elam family has a coat of arms. I have uploaded a copy of it to my website. You will find a link to it at the bottom of my main page at www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/6831 I came across some information on it in a heraldry or peerage book (I think maybe Burke's) many years ago, but have lost the copy I made of it and haven't yet been able to find it again. As I recall, the information was very sketchy. As for information on the family in England, none of us know very much. There have been fairly recent findings concerning the christening dates of a Gilbert and Martin Elam in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire. It is believed that these may be two of the the immigrant Elams who came over in the early 1600s, although the evidence is only circumstantial. By this I mean that the dates are a good fit and it would appear to be somewhat more than coincidental that there were two brothers named Martin and Gilbert who came from the area of Yorkshire where it is believed the family originated. There has not, however, been any definitive link made to date. There are also a couple of possible candidates in the same area who could have been the immigrant Robert, but nothing definite there either. I'm sorry I can't be of any more help. Quite a few of us are working on the origins of Robert, Gilbert, Martin and Richard (an 18th century Elam immigrant). If you happen to have come across any additional information, we would all very much like to hear about it. Good luck with your research. Cassie
Does anyone know anything about a Henry King Elam that married an Elizabeth Haley????????????? Thanks Starr Campbell
Hi, Elams. Am forwarding this ongoing discussion to you from another list. Annette From: awetzel@juno.com To: Pamhutgar@aol.com Cc: VACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VACHESTE-L] Re: Cox's Snow of 1857 Some Elam descendants have many connections to Traylors, Coxes, and Markhams. As of now, I have no proven connection to them. Lots of clues, but no proof. An article written by me about Clover Hill House for the United Daughters of the Confederacy Magazine 'way back in 1988 contains some additional historical information, but no genealogical info. "My Confederate Girlhood," the diary of Kate Cox Logan, edited by her daughter, Lily Logan Morrill, has been reprinted at least once. Can give you the publisher later. Julia T. Elam, who, according to the Virginia 'Old Marriage Index,' married V. D. Markham in Chesterfield County in 1853 (no day or month listed), was the daughter of William Green Elam. William G. Elam, who married 1) Sally Cox, dau. of Henry Cox; m.b. 6 July 1803; and 2) Jane Wooldridge, m.b. 14 June 1830, was the son of Richard Elam whose will was proved 2 Jan 1792, also in Chesterfield County. The recently published "Gone But Not Forgotten," Gravestone Inscriptions & Burials of Chesterfield County, Virginia, Compiled by The Cemetery Committee of The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, Edited by Rachel Baker Lipowicz, 1998, reveals the following: page 138: "ELAM-MARKHAM CEMETERY [No location given] This cemetery was visited in the 1980's. At that time there appeared to be about 7 burials and 4 stones. We rechecked the cemetery in 1996 and learned that 2 of the stones had been stolen and another dragged across a field and then left there because it was too heavy. At this writing only the stones of Lily Elam and Julia Markham remain. What a treat for me, as I have been researching on my Markham family of Chesterfield co, Va for almost 20 years now. The Traylors and Coxs are descendants of the Markhams so I immediatedly recognized the names in your note. I had never heard this story before and it was quite fascinating--actually very sad! I have written to "MadameDuck" to see if we might be able to exchange information. I was just wondering if you also had a family connection to Markham, Cox or Traylor. I was particularly interested in the mention of the Diary of Kate Cox Logan, which was published in 1930 and entitled "My Confederate Girlhood". Do you know anything further of this book? I would certainly enjoy reading it. A quick question---as I could not help noticing your maiden name Elam. For many years now I have been trying to identify Julia T Elam who married Vincent D Markham 14 Nov 1852/3 in Chesterfield co, Va. I suspect she is the same young lady, Julia Elam, shown in the 1850 census as a student at the Female Academy in Prince Edward co, Va, under the teacher, John Tinsley. She is age 16. I have not been successful at placing her with her family. I believe that Julia Elam Markham died shortly after the birth of her only son Clifford Markham, said to be in 1853. The child also died young. I believe that her young husband was greatly bereaved, as he quickly moved off to Kansas and then on to Denver Colorado where he lived to be a distinguished and honored Judge of that territory. He remarried, but never had any other children. I have always wanted to know more about Julia Elam---just wondered if you might have any thoughts to offer. Please know how much I appreciated your interesting "sharing". I would enjoy hearing from you, at your convenience. Most sincerely, Pamela Garrett Pamhutgar@aol.com Oklahoma City, Ok In a message dated 98-12-29 19:55:24 EST, you write: << ubj: [VACHESTE-L] Re: Cox's Snow of 1857 Date: 98-12-29 19:55:24 EST From: awetzel@juno.com (Annette E Wetzel) Reply-to: VACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com Quoting from "Chesterfield County Early Architecture and Historic Sites," by Jeff O'Dell, pub. by County of Chesterfield, VA, c. 1983, page 213: "In January, 1857, during one of the greatest recorded snowstorms in Virginia history - thereafter referred to as "Cox's Snow" - Dr. Edwin Cox, former mayor of Petersburg and brother of Judge James H. Cox, froze to death at the entrance to Clover Hill. Accompanied by Archer Traylor, a young kinsman, Cox was stranded in the snow while returning to his home plantation north of Clover Hill after calling on a patient in Petersburg. At the gate to Clover Hill, both men were overcome by the cold. According to Kate Cox Logan: 'The next morning...at the gate to the lane leading to the residence of Judge James H. Cox, seven hundred yards from the house, were discovered covered by a snowdrift, the frozen body of Dr. Cox; the horse frozen to death; the buggy in which Dr. Cox had been driving and in it the unconscious form of Mr. Traylor. Though alive when found, he never regained consciousness, and died at Judge Cox's residence. Eight mules were required to break a path to carry the notice of the death of Dr. Cox to Petersburg, and although the start was made in the morning early, it was late in the afternoon before the news reached there.'" [Note: Clover Hill was the plantation of Judge James H. Cox (1810-1877), on which coal reserves were discovered in 1837, and is located in the Winterpock area of Chesterfield County, VA. Judge Cox was the son of Henry Cox (1777-1856), who lived at Sappony, a plantation about five miles west of Clover Hill. Kate Cox was the daughter of Judge Cox. After the War Between the States, Kate Cox married Gen. Thomas M. Logan of South Carolina. She kept a diary which was edited and published in the 1930's by her daughter, Lilly Logan as "My Confederate Girlhood."] Hope this helps!
