    3. Hi fellow Elam researchers, I am new to this genealogy business but I have had some great results in a short amount of time; most due to the kind help of others. I would like to let you all know my lineage in hopes that someone is reserching this same line. Here is what I know for sure and then some speculation based on some pretty sound circumstantial evidence. Kent A. Elam, Jr. (me) Kent A. Elam, Sr. (1936-1989) born in Franklin county IL Kenneth Edward Elam (1916-1989) born in Union county IL Oscar Randolph Elam (1892-1954) born in Union county IL John Daniel Elam (1852-1933) born in Granville or Iredell county NC; died Union county IL John Elam (abt 1806 to abt 1875) born in Mecklenburg county VA; died in Iredell county NC The above I know for sure, the rest is theory based on some strong circumstantial evidence. Peter Elam (1771-1842) born in Mecklenburg county VA Joel Elam (1739-1798) John Edward Elam (1710-1788) John Elam (1688-1761) Martin Elam (1635-1693/94) Thomas Elam (1600-?) I am actively researching the brothers and sisters of John Daniel Elam and trying to prove or disprove my link to Peter Elam. I would be happy to share what I have with anyone interested. Kent Elam

    3. Howdy cousins! I hope everyone's new year has gotten off to a good start. We have had quite a few new members join the list since we last did a roll call, so I thought I'd take a moment to explain to them what we've done in the past. We have found it helpful to have everyone post their Elam lineage so that we can all see who might be directly related to us and/or working on the same brick walls. There's no need to put together anything really elaborate. By way of example, the following is my line: Cassie A. Elam Thomas Jefferson Elam, Jr. Thomas Jefferson Elam, Sr. William Barrett Elam, Sr. Thomas Jefferson Elam William Barrett Elam Jesse Elam William Elam James Elam Gilbert Elam III Gilbert Elam, Jr. Gilbert Elam, Sr./Ann Robert Elam (through Ann) Thomas Elam You can include as much information and do it in any format that you like. Your participation certainly isn't mandatory, but it's a good way to make some contacts. It also helps me so that I know to whom I can refer people if they ask me a question to which I don't know the answer (I'm working toward omniscience, but haven't had a lot of time to devote to it lately). One quick note about my web page. I had been saving all of the Elam-Roots digests and making them accessible from an archive that I maintained. That has gotten to be too much work, so what I'm going to do is change the link to take you to the Rootsweb search engine. What you can do to search previous issues of Elam-Roots (or ANY other list sponsored by Rootsweb) is go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl where you will be prompted to enter the name of the mailing list you want to search. If you want to search this list, just type in Elam-Roots-L (don't type it in all caps). If you want to search other mailing list archives, you can access the main Rootsweb list by going to http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Once you've typed in the list name you want to search, you will be taken to another page where you can type in your query and tell it what year's archive you want it to search. It may sound confusing to as you're reading this, but it's really very easy once you actually sit down and do it. Good luck with your research! Cassie A. 2. I am trying to find my great great grandmother Alice Elam born in Talladega Ala. married to John Hanes from Ga. I can neither find her birth or marriage in any info I have traced. She had 2 children Mimm and Rena Hanes and died before 1880 because in 1880 John had remarried and had a different wife and 2 other children. John had a sister named Mattie (Matilda??) and mother Frances. They are in the 1880 census in Ellis Co Texas as are Rena Mimm and John. Any help will be appreciated. This is the brick wall for me. 3. Hi, Does anyone have any information on a J.D. Elam and/or his family who apparently was elected to the Virginia State Senate from Mecklenburg county in 1908 and 1910? All I have is from the book, Life by the Roaring Roanoke by Susan L. Bracey (page 444). My Elam roots seems to be in Mecklenburg county so I was wondering if this may be an ancestor. Thanks in advance, Kent Elam

    2. VIRGINIA MARRIAGE BONDS: RICHMOND CITY, VOL.I, by Anne Waller Reddy and Andrew Lewis Riffe, IV (Staunton VA: McClure, c. 1960) contains the following marriage: 23 December 1846: John Richard ELAM, orphan of Richard ELAM of Chesterfield, to Elizabeth JONES, ward of J. D. HARGROVE. The book offers no further information, but having the date could allow a search of other Richmond records. This is not my direct line, but I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows more about their children or about Elizabeth's parents. I'm sure there are a zillion Elizabeth Joneses, but not many of them would be wards of J. D. Hargrove. Laura Keyes Perry keyesperry@aol.com

    3. Kent, I am not researching this particular line, but I was wondering if you had come across any information on Richard, James Llewallen (Lou Allen), or James Henry in your searches. They also hailed from about the same area. Richard was said to have been the brother to Samuel and John, who came here from Scotland? Don't have any proof of that as yet. Lou Allen is a mystery and so is Richard for the most part. I have founded many SKIPPED generations because of the fact that they used the same names SOOOOO much! Thanks, Jayne -----Original Message----- From: Kent A. Elam, Jr. [mailto:kbjrelam@villagrove.com] Sent: Friday, January 22, 1999 11:17 PM To: ELAM-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ELAM-ROOTS-L] John and Martha Elam Hi, For some time, I was lead to believe that my ggggrandfather was Daniel Elam. That is not correct. I even made several posts to that effect. I have since discovered that he is in fact John Elam. On December 5, 1835, John married Martha Yancey, daughter of Charles Yancey, by a Rev. John B. Smith in Mecklenburg county VA. Sometime before 1850, he moved to Granville county, NC where he is found residing next to a Richard T. Elam (son of Daniel, son of Peter, son of Joel) in the 1850 census. I find John and Martha in Iredell county, NC in 1860 and 1870. In 1880, Martha is alone in Iredell county with her youngest children and some of the older children are now married and residing in the county. John has died abt. 1875. A Will is probated about this time for him. John and Martha had the following children: (the grandchildren listed are from the 1880 census, I have not researched any farther yet) Mary, born abt. 1836 Elizabeth, born abt. 1844 (married to a Johnson?) Silas, born abt. 1847; married to Tabitha (?) (children Olla R. born abt. 1872; James born abt. 1875; Augustus, born abt. 1877) Martha, born abt. 1849 Nannie or Nancy, born abt. 1851 (married to a Saffriet or Saffrit) John Daniel, born 2/14/1852; died 7/25/1933 THIS IS WHO I DESCEND THROUGH Isabella or Arabella, born abt. 1853; married to Calvin C. Stroud (children Augustus E. born abt. 1872; Della M. born abt. 1880) Richard, born abt. 1855; married to Mary G. (?) (children Opha, born abt. 1879) Charles, born abt. 1859 Rowland, born abt. 1861 Alice, born abt. 1864 (married to a Wallace) Is anyone researching any of these people. I would love to know more about them. I would also like to discover who John's parents are. I am suspicious that John may be the youngest son of Peter Elam (son of Joel) in Mecklenburg Co. VA. The time and place is correct. Could someone shed some light on this for me. There are also these following coincidences that lead me to this conclusion: 1. Peter's oldest son is Daniel. He has two daughters, Susan and Mary Ann. They both marry Yancey men. Susan marries Reason P. Yancey and Mary Ann marries Alexander, both sons of Charles Yancey. Also, there is some conection to a Daniel from family recollection. We were once lead to believe that my John Daniel's father was named Daniel. 2. My John Elam marries Martha Yancey, daughter of Charles, sister to Reason and Alexander. 3. The same minister marries all three couples, John B. Smith in Mecklenburg County, VA. They all come from the same area and it seems they all attended church together. 4. In 1850, John and Martha Elam are residing in Granville county, NC alongside Richard T. Elam, oldest son of Daniel Elam of Mecklenburg County, VA. 5. Granville Co. NC is right across the border from Mecklenburg Co. VA. 6. The names of all the children of these families mirror each other, this was something I was told that the Elams did. I would enjoy hearing from anyone on this matter, Thanks in advance, Kent Elam
