    1. [ELAM-ROOTS-L] John Elam of Mecklenburg County
    2. Kent A. Elam, Jr.
    3. Dear cousins, John Elam (1806-1875), who married Martha Yancey (1818-1893) on Dec 5, 1835 in Mecklenburg county is my ggg grandfather. This query has two parts, first, I have always been a little suspicious of an earlier marriage because of his age of 29 years old when he married Martha. In marriage records of Mecklenburg county, there are two other John Elams listed as marrying prior to 1835. They are: John G. Elam and Mary J. Overby, Nov 14, 1829 John Elam and Susan M. Hall, Sept 23, 1829 (the minister for this ceremony would be consistent with Bethel Baptist church where John and Martha were married in 1835) Anybody have these aforementioned Elams in their lineage? Second, in marriage records of Mecklenburg county, there is a marriage recorded between John Elam and Polly W. Garner on Oct 23, 1797 (the minister for this ceremony would be consistent with Bethel Baptist church where John and Martha were married in 1835) I believe this John (abt 1767-Jun 26, 1806) to be the son of Edward Elam (abt 1733-abt 1811); this Edward being the brother to Joel Elam of Mecklenburg co. and possible son of John Edward Elam or John Elam, Jr. My point here is that this John could possibly have been the father of my John Elam. I have been trying to either find or eliminate possible candidates for my John's father. Can anyone help me out here. There is actually a fourth marriage of a John Elam (son of Edward Elam Jr., son of Edward Elam) to Elizabeth Elam (daughter of Alexander Elam, son of Joel Elam of Mecklenburg co.) but I am pretty sure I have eliminated him. Why did I have to be related to a John Elam? (ha ha) Couldn't they have been more imaginative with names? Please look over your records, I would like to hear from you even if it is just sympathy. Thanks, Kent Elam PS I am posting this at several sites so you may see it again.

    3. Kay: You are not off base by any means. Although I do not have a Ferguson line, Farguson could just as easily be Ferguson, Fargason or Fargasson. These spellings appear in the Henrico Co VA will books and are the same family and often the same individuals. Early documents often spelled surnames several ways in the same document. They knew who they and everyone else knew who they were so, I guess, the spelling didn't matter at all that much. 3. Steven Wayne Strickland (me) 1961- Harold Wayne Strickland 1938- wed Jacqueline Gale Pollard Paul Ebenezer Strickland (1911-1950) wed Thelma Louise Crow Jodie March Drennan (1875-1940) wed Wm. Mounteville Strickland Parthenia A. Seay (1837-1906) wed John Calhoun Drennan Sarah Oliver Elam (c.1806 VA - 187_ TX) wed Ransom Seay (1796 SC- 1862 GA). Sarah Elam and Ransom Seay were the parents of my gr-gr-grandmother Parthenia Drennan. Census consistently indicates Sarah was born in VA. I believe the couple probably married in Spartanburg Co., SC, as Ransom Seay and family were already firmly entrenched there by the mid-1820's when Ransom and Sarah would have married, and the first of their children were born there. In the 1830's they moved to Dekalb Co., GA. Can be found in census: 1840 Dekalb Co., GA; 1850 Chattooga County, GA; 1860-70 Whitfield Co., GA. Sarah is alleged to have moved westward with one of her children in the 1870's--probably with Alexander Marion Seay or Martha Elizabeth Seay Kite Smith and families--and died there, no grave has yet been found. Sarah is thought to have been the sister of Willis M. Elam, who shows up in the Dekalb and Chattooga County censuses with the Seay family. Further, her mother's maiden name is supposed to have been Vaughn. Annette Wetzel has kindly shared one Elam-Vaughn marriage record, but the date of said record is apparently too late to represent the marriage of Sarah's parents. Help! Thanks! Steve Strickland

    2. We feel, but have not proven the relationship, that several ELAM brothers lived in Warren County, TN during the early to mid 1800s; Lemuel, Reuben, James H, John, and Jonathan. During a recent visit to Warren County I found an 1821 document...Deed Book D, Pages 170 -171....whereby Jonathan ELAM gave a Power of Attorney to William G. GUINN. Jonathan listed his place of residence as, what appears to be, Lawrence County, Alabama in this document. Is this your Jonathan? If so, researchers of the other apparent brothers sure would like to correspond with you. Regards, Bob Walker

    3. Annette: In your posting below, I noticed a couple of interesting things which prompts some additional information and a question. First the question; it regards Elizabeth, who we know as the widow of Gilbert Elam IV, who married Archelaus Nunnally. The information you passed on had her name as Elizabeth Scott Farguson Elam Nunnally. Do you have any further information about Elizabeth, her maiden name as Scott and this possible 1st marriage to a Farguson?? I have not been able to pin down that she was a Scott - see the information further down under Archelaus Nunnally where she is given as a Scott - and this name Farguson is the first I have ever seen of it. An additional question regards her children by Gilbert Elam IV. Her son Josiah's descendants are well known. But her daughter Keziah is problematic. My whole Elam line hangs by the assumption and deduction that she married into the Nunnallys as well. Do you or does anyone know what happened to her? (Sorry to redundant with this question, as I have asked it several times before.) Now the information. Notice the occurence of many Henrico and Chesterfield family names in the middle names of John Nunnally's children. Regarding Susan Burton d/o William Burton & Mary Walthall, I have the following (but without documentation) about her marriage to John Nunnally. This comes from Josephy Adams Shortal, "Nunnally Genealogy" Hampton, Va.: privately published, mimeo, 1978, pps. 6-7, and 9. pps. 6-7 "4.12 Archelaus NUNNALLY was b in Chesterfield Col, Va. and d 1794 in Powhatan Co., Va. (See 'The Elam Family' by Harvey W. Elam.) Archelaus NUNNALLY bought 200 acres of land on the Apponattox river in Cumberland Co., Va. 24 Jun 1771. This area became a part of Powhatan Co., Va. in 1777 where, in 1783, Archelaus was listed as head of a family of eight with seven slaves. On 23 Sep 1782 Archelaus purchased 250 acres of adjoining land from the Burton estate. Then on 5 Oct 1792 he sold this 250 acres, for a token sum, to his son John, who had married a Burton daughter. 3. Hi! I'm a little late in listing my lineage and my elusive Elam, but here it is: Sharon O'Meara John O'Meara Elmo O'Meara Ada Belle White Louisa Jane Craig Martha Jane Elam (m.Richard Alexander Craig before 1846) I am trying to locate Martha Jane Elam's parents, brothers, place of origin, etc. The family story says that they came to Texas in 1852 from Mississippi via Illinois. I have been able to confirm that Martha's daughter, Louisa Jane Craig, was born in Clark County, Illinois. Any information or leads would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you, Sharon O'Meara omeara@wt.net
