Kent, I have researched in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, Prince George, Amelia, and a few other counties in VA, primarily in court house records. I have not searched cemeteries. When in Mecklenburg Co., you should visit Stuart and Margaret Elam in Chase City. They operate a jewelry store there. He was born in the co about 1920, but when I visited there in 1997 he had no information on generations beyond his grandfather. I have not connected him, therefore, to Joel or any of the other Elams who may have been related to Joel. From the records it is my understanding that Joel lived on Irby's (Yerby on some modern USGS maps) Creek, a branch of the Bluestone. William, Edward, and sons of their sons also lived on the Bluestone, but probably in what is now Charlotte Co. I would be interested in knowing if you find graves of Solomon Harmon Elam and his descendants or an Alexander Elam who died in 1789 and who I believe was a brother of Joel, William, and Edward. I will be away from my computer from about June 4 to the end of July, traveling in the West, but will check back with you. Thanks. Earl Elam
Branch ELAM is not a direct ancestor of mine, but I do have a little information on him. Birth dates and death dates below are approximate. Descendants of Branch Elam 1 Branch ELAM 1752 - 1826 +Dinah ELAM 1752 - 2 Phebe Baugh ELAM abt 1784 - +Thomas GODSEY abt 1779 - [Phebe married Thomas in 1800. Branch Elam consented to his daughter's marriage. Surety was Berkeley Elam. Witness was Francis Cheatham. Rev. Charles Forsee, minister of Skinquarter Baptist Church, married the couple. His marriage return refers to the bride as Phebe Branch Elam.] 3 Nancy GODSEY 1810 - +Mackness BLANKENSHIP 1791 - 3 Lavenia GODSEY 1814 - +Bolling R. FARMER 1814 - 1850 4 Harriet FARMER 1836 - +William LYNCH 1829 - 3 Levi GODSEY 1804 - +Mary BLANKENSHIP 1810 - 1842 4 George GODSEY 1832 - 4 Robert GODSEY 1833 - 4 Mary J. GODSEY 1836 - 4 Branch GODSEY 1839 - 4 Alexander GODSEY 1841 - 4 Richard W. GODSEY 1842 - 2 Cinderilla ELAM 1805 - +Pleasant HIX 1805 - [Cinderella married Pleasant in 1826. As Cinderilla's father Branch Elam was deceased, her guardians, Molly and Josiah Stringer, consented to her marriage. Thomas Roberts and John B. Taylor were witnesses.] Records from the War of 1812 include BRANCH ELAM 4th REGIMENT VIRGINIA MILITIA. [I do not know whether that was this Branch Elam, nor whether the National Archives can provide additional information.] Knorr's compilation of marriages in Chesterfield County VA lists 2 additional marriages for Branch Elam, but whether he is the same person I do not know: in 1801 to Elizabeth Flournoy and in 1809 to Mary Snellings. The latter marriage required the permission of the bride's father. Danny Richards <danrich@ix.netcom.com> says Branch Elam was the son of Robert Elam (1684-1753), the son of Gilbert Elam Jr. (1659-1697). Danny says Branch's marriage to Elizabeth Flournoy produced Hodijah Elam (1803-1883), who married Mary Davenport and fathered Francis Marion Elam (1836-1900). Benjamin B. Weisiger's list of marriages in Chesterfield Co. says Francis W. DUNNAVANT married Michall ELAM in 1823. Richard and Daniel Cheatham were witnesses. For Chesterfield County families, it makes sense to search the archives of the Chesterfield County List (VACHESTE) and Virginia List (as well as the ELAM List's archives). To search a list, go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and enter the name of the list. The next screen will let you enter keywords to search each year's records. You asked about WALTHALL-ELAM marriages. Knorr's book of Chesterfield Co. marriages lists the marriage of Francis WALTHALL and Phebe ELAM in 1801 (no month or day); married by Rev. Charles Forsee of Skinquarter Baptist Church. Also, on 7 Dec. 1797, Richard WALTHALL m. Winefred WALTHALL, dau. of Richard Walthall, who consented. Surety was Leonard Cheatham, Jr. Rev. Nathan Anderson, Methodist. "Branch" was a common surname in Chesterfield County and may indicate some connection to that family, but I do not know the identity of Branch's parents. I know of no HODGES in Chesterfield Co. Laura Keyes Perry keyesperry@aol.com
Cathy, My Joel Elam (1736-1798) was from Lunenburg County which later became Mecklenburg County Virginia. He was a proponent of the Revolution and gave grain and meat for the war effort. His oldest son Alexander was a private in the Revolution. Many of Alexander's children moved here to Illinois in the early 1800's and settled in the Bond county area (around Greenville and Vandalia). There is still a remnant of that family there. One of Joel's other sons, Peter, is who I descend from. Peter's youngest son John married Martha Yancey of Mecklenburg county in 1835 and then soon after moved into Granville county NC. They then moved to Iredell county NC where I have located living Elam cousins. We are going to meet later this summer. My great great grandfather John Daniel, left Iredell county in 1875 and moved to Union county Illinois where he raised 14 children. I have a lot of cousins in Union county but they are getting up in age. I do not know many of the younger ones. My Elam line looks like this: Kent Elam, Jr (me) Kent Elam, Sr (1936-1989) Kenneth Elam (1916-1989) Oscar Elam (1892-1954) John Daniel Elam (1852-1933) John Elam (1806-1875) Peter Elam (1767-1842) Joel Elam (1736-1798) >From here the lineage is only by circumstantial evidence. No one has been able to document this as fact but many Elam researchers have studied this for years and believe that there is a high probability that this is true. John Elam, Jr John Elam, Sr Martin Elam Thomas Elam or Robert Elam I have seen reference to a younger Joel Elam in some of my research. I believe he may be from the Charlotte county VA Elams. They are allegeded to be the brothers of my Joel (all sons of this John Elam Jr). This younger Joel may possibly be a nephew to my Joel. It is also possible that this younger Joel is the son of Alexander therefore making him a grandson to my Joel. Please do not quote me on any of this. I will see if I can dig up some information on the younger Joel. The Elams seemed to name there children after there brothers so there could be a relationship here. You might also try posting your query about your Joel at the following address: ELAM-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com There are a lot of knowledgeable Elam researchers at this site. I have got to get going. My day is starting early. Let me know what you think. Kent

I now believe that my ancestor Hodges E. Dunnavant was Hodges Elam Dunnavant. I am looking for any information on a Walthall - Elam marriage and on Branch Elam. Hodges father and mother were Thomas Dunnavant and Charity (Walthall or Elam?) . There is a William Walthall who witnessed a deed. Does anyone know if this was William who was married to Anne Elam? Or who Charity might be? Below is a document of Branch Elam who lived next door to Thomas Dunnivant , father of Hodges and grandfather of Francis Walthall Dunnavant. Also next door is Jacob Flournoy , grandfather of Lydia Flournoy Dunnavant, wife of Francis. Hi all, I will be visiting Mecklenburg county later this summer and I would like to know if anyone knows where the Joel Elam clan is buried and the location of where they lived? They seemed to be in the area of the Middle Bluestone Creek along Irby's branch but I have not discovered where exactly that place is. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know the burial sites of this family as well as where the original settlement might have been. You may see this post twice if you monitor other Virginia Rootsweb sites. Thanks, Kent Elam
Does anyone have any information on JAMES WILLAM ELAM ? He was born in Illinois on Feb 17, 1857. He as a young man migrated to Hamilton , Missouri, Married Carrie Jordan there in about 1881. If anyone has any Elams from Butler Co, KY, I just came across a webpage at http://members.aol.com/desertroad/ which says it has a book with the Elam surname in it. Cassie
Cassie- The Nickels - Elam Family reunion is 12 - 13 June 1999 at Nickelsville, VA.
I know several of the families have reunions every year. Does anyone have any information on them? I would like to update this information for my web page. Thanks. Cassie

Peggy and All, I just wanted to point out some differing information regarding the children of Llewallyn and Mary "Polly" Eans Elam. James Elam married Marinda Sharp and later married Mary Alice Roberts. This James did not die in 1883 in Washington Territory according to my research. James died in Benton County Arkansas in 1901. He is my g.g.g.g. grandfather, making Llewallyn "Lou Allen" my g.g.g.g.g. grandfather. William Wilshire Elam, lived in Benton County Arkansas a short time, later moving to live with his daughter in Texas, where he then died and was buried. Other Children of Llewallyn and Mary "Polly" Eans Elam are Susan, Elizabeth Ann, Alfred Martin and Nancy. In the 1850 Bond Co, Ill Census Alfred and his family are residing with James and Marinda. Lewallyn is said to have been a veteran of the war of 1812, however, I have no documentation of that at this point. Lewallyn moved to Butler KY between 1817 and 1820, then on to Clark County IL arou1823-1825. Lewallyn died and was buried in Illinois and so was Mary according to what information I have been able to find. I am planning a trip to Chicago this summer at which time I hope to be able to obtain records backing their place of death and burial sites. Hope this helps someone.
