PILE ; Dr. George F. who married Rachel D. McENTIRE; and Margaret Julina who married Christopher Columbus LOWERY. William then remarried Sarah PRUETT and had five children : David L.; William D.; Dulcina who married O. MASSIE; Philip, and John F. . Does anyone have information or leads on Sam Elam, born (?) died c. 1935. As far as I know, he came from Kentucky, migrated to Arkansas and later to East Texas. I'm new at this so any help or responses will be appreciated......Paul Elam

Kent, you can obtain an index to topographic maps of Virginia from the Unted States Geological Survey (USGS), Map Sales, Box 25286, Federal Center, Bldg, 810, Denver, CO 80225. I have not ordered maps since about 1995 but I think this address is good. Also, you might try calling 303-236-7477, Denver, USGS Office, for info on maps and how to order. I think that number is still good. You can obtain detailed maps for a reasonable cost covering the region in which you are interested. My book will contain much about the the land sales involving the brothers (I think) William, Edward, and Joel. There was a definite connection between these men and their offspring who stayed in the area. Originally, the region was a part of Brunwick co, then it was part of Lunenburg Co., then, finally, there was Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Charlotte counties. Thus, some confusion exists because some places where the Elams lived was once in all of these counties. It looks now that my book will not be ready for circulation until late in the summer. I am about finished with writing and editing, but I will be away for almost two months in June and July and it will take about six weeks or so to get it printed. Does anyone know of an Elam family that lived in or around the Edgefield Co., SC area around the early 1800s? I have a Harriett Merchant who married John Ealum in SC. It will return all features; creeks, mountains, schools, etc. that have the name of Irby. On the far right (assuming it finds Irby) you will see the name of a USGS topographical map covering the area that can be ordered from the website or from your local map supplier. Of course, time is not on my side, but I would at the very least like to look upon the ground that Joel and his sons worked along Irby's Creek. Would you have any idea where I could get a map of that area? I have called the courthouse and they have no idea how to secure a map that would show this area and I am not sure what agency to contact. How is your book coming? I am anxious to get a look at it. I have so many unanswered questions about that particular group of Elams. As I have studied the Mecklenburg county deeds, I have discovered overlapping names as witnesses to sales of land tracts. I cannot help but believe that there is a relationship between the Charlotte county Elams and the Mecklenburg county Elams. I also believe that they may have purchased land back and forth between the two counties. I have no proof but just a hunch. I will be happy to keep you posted on what I may find out. I am particularly interested in a land transaction between my Peter Elam and two gentlemen from Charlotte county. I suspect that there may be a court document or two to go along with this deed. It appears that he put all he owned up as security for a debt he incurred with a man from Charlotte county. What I do not know is how it all ended. I will indeed look up Stuart and Margaret Elam. My brother's name is Stewart. What a coincidence.
