Anyone have an idea of how to work around this problem? My Mary ELAM married Henry LONDON, and I want to search the Rootsweb pages for LONDON. But how do I get the surname and avoid the thousands of references to London, the city? Under Primary Records alone, there are 1,975 references to London. I checked the first 10 which showed up, and every one of them was referring to a location, not a person! There is even a London, TX, by the way. ROOTSWEB PUTS IT TOGETHER. Have you ever wished you could look up *everything* at RootsWeb that relates to a particular surname? Now you can! Click on the new option SURNAME RESOURCES at RootsWeb's main page <http://www.rootsweb.com/> or go directly to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/>. Click on the letter of the alphabet for the surname of interest, and then select it from the list that appears. This will take you to a "surname resource cluster," where you can search for your surname in numerous databases. For example, using BANKSTON you would find: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BANKSTON/>, where you could search "B" WEB SITES, the OBITUARY DAILY TIMES, or: o The ROOTSWEB SURNAME LIST (RSL). RSL search options are by surname, Soundex, or Metaphone (the latter two are "sounds- like" matches). You can search for updates from the past two months, last month, last week, or for any mention. o TRANSCRIPTION PROJECTS. You might check to see if your immigrant ancestors' names are listed at the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild (ISTG). o PRIMARY RECORDS AT ROOTSWEB (from USGenWeb Archives and RootsWeb Searchable Databases). o GENERAL LINKS AND SEARCH ENGINES. There are three options. o ROOTSLINK link registry. You can add a new link also. o SEEKER search engine, which returns surname matches from Web pages -- there is much "hidden genealogy" that this search will help you find. o SURNAME HELPER search engine finds queries and surname registrations posted at various genealogically-related sites on the Web, with participating sites including many USGenWeb and WorldGenWeb sites. All GenConnect boards are indexed in Surname Helper. o MAILING LISTS. Descriptions of lists that relate to this surname, subscription instructions, and links to the archives so you can search or browse past postings. o GENCONNECT. Click on GLOBAL SURNAME SEARCH to find queries that mention the surname of interest that are posted in connection with any county, state, or country in the world. Or click an icon for one of the seven automated boards that together make up a "suite" of boards available for surnames and localities (Queries, Bible records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills).
Thanks for bringing that up, Marilynn. In the beginning, I was really only concentrating on the male lines just because there were so many names to get entered into the database. While I'm still slogging through these, I've also begun to work on some of the female lines, so if anyone has any to contribute, fire away! I'll be out of commission for a little while (my laptop is on the fritz) but I should be back up and running shortly. Cassie
I must have an old addess for you. My messages to you bounce. I have an enclosure to send you. Please send E-Mail address. Marilynn
-------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: Earl H. Elam, To: Elam-Roots-L, INTERNET: Elam-Roots-L@rootsweb.com Date: 6/3/99 10:29 PM RE: Misc. Cassie, your military project is an admirable one, but one that will grow and grow and grow! My cousins from Texas, John L. Elam Jr., Eugene Mack Elam, and Worley Joe Elam all served in the Navy in WWII. I served in the Navy, 1953-57 (officially a Korean Vet, but also spent nearly a year in Vietnam during that time), RM2, radioman, Enlisted Staff, Comphibgru One, aboard USS Eldorado, USS Estes, USS Cook, USS Diachenko, and other ships and at Amphibious Base, Coronado (San Diego). For your information and others who may be interested, my book on the Elam family is finished, except for final editing and including photographs, maps, etc. I had hoped to have it all done by now and to circulate at our 25th annual Elam reunion which is in Thousand Oaks, CA,, June 11-13. I'll have the manuscript there but no printed copy. I will be traveling in the West after the reunion until the end of July, so plans to print the book will be seriously begun in August, although I have bids already. I will post a notice when this occurs. Also for general into, my computer will be off during my travels. I will check in again about August 1. Good luck with your military list and other projects. We all appreciate your work. Have a nice summer. Earl H. Elam
Cassie, My grandfather, Kenneth E. Elam (1916-1989) served in the Navy in WWII on the battleship USS New Jersey. Kent Elam

My two brothers were in the Navy -- Nathaniel Gerard (1959 -) and Anthony George (1961-). I tried to enlist in the Navy but failed the eye test. <sigh> Please add these men to your list. Thanks. Cassie, Hi again! When I sent you all I knew on my branch of the Elam/Eleam family I apparently forgot the military information. I do not claim to know much, but here goes.............Willis Farmer Eleam was in the Army in WWII, and served in the European Theatre.............James Earl Eleam, my father, was in the Army, but remained in the states as an MP. As I understand it the military tried to keep at least one son state side so that family names wouldn't get wiped out. Then there was Thomas Jefferson Eleam.........also in the Army stationed mostly in England, I believe. I also have a cousin, Gerald Eleam, son of Willis Farmer Eleam, who flew helicopers in Viet Nam, and pulled 3 tours of duty there. After his 3 tours of duty he taught other soldiers to fly helicopters. He received a couple of metals and was wounded. He acheived(?) the rank of Major, I believe, before his retirement. I have know idea where he is now. You may be able to E-Mail his brother at ddeleam@midwest.net. That is the E-Mail address I have, and as far as I know it is still good. Keep up the good work. We'll get this thing figured out one of these days!
