In the Muster Role of Captain Moses's Moore's Co., containing names of settlers west of the Catawba, date would be before July 1768, we find one Elam, William. I descend from Edward (the first of several Edwards) who came from Eng. to Va. He was born about 1735. He had Edward Jr. born 1765, probably Charlotte Co., Va Edward Jr. remarried and came to Rutherford Co., NC, after my G-G-Grand, Anderson Elam, son of Edward Jr., had settled here, about 1815. The second Edward came with his second wife. Apparantly his wife died and he went on to TN with two of his sons and finally died in Bond Co.,Ill. The third Edward was born in 1798. His mother was Martha Smith. Lots of Edwards and we apparantly don't connect to any other Elam families. But we have good reunions every year, here in Cleveland Co., NC to which all Elams are invited. We have very well organized meetings. Everyone brings a lot of food, everyone eats until stuffed, somebody brings up a business meeting that takes about 5 minutes and when we are able to get up, we go home. I would be willing to contribute also. Brenda
I appreciate all your efforts.
If you would like to dress up your webpage, or genealogy, with any of the above you should visit: www.50states.com You can download sound clips of the state songs, and pictures of the others. Nice little freebie. Regards, Bob Walker
Cassie Yes send me a list of names and I will start mailing cards. LaDonna
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------616F47093C8B Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi cousins -- I have received several offers to help out in paying for the move of the website to Rootsweb. While it's not necessary, if you really want to I would happily accept your kind offers. That brings to mind something I've been mulling over in my feverish brain of late. What would people think about making an organized effort to try and contact some of our "snail-mail only" Elam cousins? Since we have lists of Elams from every state we could do some sort of a mailing to try and get some more folks contributing to our research. Who knows what knowledge is lurking in someone's attic who doesn't belong to the list? I've checked with the Post Office and pre-stamped postcards can be purchased from it for 21 cents each. The postage for a regular postcard is 20 cents, so this seems to be the most economical route. If you all are interested in going this route, I could either send lists of addresses to those of you who would like to participate or you could make a contribution to be used for purchasing the postcards. Another idea would be to set up an "official" Elam Family History Association. While I don't have time to undertake its organization, I have done some research into how other such groups are set up and would be glad to pitch in with getting it up and running. For a yearly subscription, you typically get a membership card or certificate and a periodic newsletter. The dues are used to cover such items as the newsletter, advertising the association, establishing a research library, etc. The associations I looked at all have a website that, while varying in content, seems to look pretty much like the one I've already got set up. If people are agreeable, I could modify it to become the official association website and we could go from there. Well, what do you think? Any volunteers? I think I finally have a solution for the Great Website Debate of 1999. After checking around, I find that Rootsweb offers the best deal. Although they sponsor some websites for free, they do not do this for one-surname sites like mine. However, for $75 a year, I can get 50 mb of space and not have to worry about our information being "appropriated" by some corporation for its own personal gain. I am currenlty running at 18+ megs using the GED2WWW software to display the names in the database. There is a program I own called GEDPAGE which also displays the names, but does so in a Family Groupsheet format. For obvious reasons, this is a more preferable format to use, but I have been unable to do so because of the huge amount of space it consumes. Hopefully 50 mbs will be sufficient for this purpose. I am trying to track down all of the children of Martin J. Elam (1840-1911) and Harriet Cross (1836-?). According to my records, he was born in Bond County, IL, and died in Appanoose County, IA. Harriet Cross was born in Monongalia County, VA, but I don't have a location for her death (although it probably was Appanoose County, IA, also). I know that they had one child--a daughter named Pernecia Elam, b. 19 June 1865 (my great grandmother, who I remember well). As single child families were infrequent, I assume she had brothers and/or sisters, but I don't remember her ever speaking of any siblings and I haven't a clue how to track them down. Any help would be appreciated. If you have any information, please e-mail me at daver2@earthlink.net. Thanks in advance for your help. Dave Adams
Thanks Paul. I'll drop Mark a line. The site currently uses more than 10 megs however, and if I switch to the software I'd rather be using (GedPage) it will take easily twice that. Cassie
I know this might be some "elementary" information to most of you, but it might help some others. If you are interested, contact Mark Thowe at the address below. I've used them for three years with a small business web site and am very happy with their services.
