    2. Bruce Elam
    3. I am looking for info on my grandfather Robert C. Elam born about 1893? probably in Kentucky. I have been told that he had a brother that was an editor for a newspaper in Kentucky. He married Olive Miller in 1924 in Oklahoma and I was told that he had been married prior to that. He and my grandmother and their children lived in Michigan and Ohio. He left the family in the mid 1930's. He may have ended up in Missouri. Any help would be very greatly appreciated as the only Elam that I know is my father. Thank you, Bruce Elam Norman, OK

    3. Brenda, Thanks. I'd be glad to hear if she knows anything. Apparently the Roland AMYX I'm looking for had several illegitimate children. Also heard another possiblility for Troy's father as Andrew ELAM. Do you know anything about him? (I haven't posted that to the list yet.) I have a lot of ELAMs in my data base, but no Andrew. The children were : John Daniel Samuel Edward Jr. Mary (Molly) Rebecca Sarah Elizabeth Nancy I descend from Edward Jr. and HE moved to Tenn. with his second wife and two children by her. I have that from a bible record of a Mr. William Elam, Medina, TN. I, being a member also of the Gardner/Garner family, have records of Edward Jr. living here in Rutherford/Cleveland Co., for a time. 3. Alice ELAM was born March 16, 1855 and died May 10, 1912. She married Dock Franklin NEW about 1877 in Carroll Co. GA. He was born Feb. 14, 1852 and died Dec. 23, 1933. I believe they lived in Carrollton, Carroll Co. GA all their married lives. My ancestor, John ELAM, lived in Carrollton GA from 1850 or so until he died. He had a daughter named Josephine Alice who was born ca 1856 and was always called Alice on the records I've seen. This Alice's brother was Wiley Cumbia ELAM, my gr.gr. grandfather. I think that "my" Josephine Alice was the same woman who married Dock NEW. Can anyone help me confirm this? Vickie Elam White

    3. Hi Paula -- In answer to your questions: >My questions are these: Where can I find this source? The Library of VA? >Is is online in their digital library? And what type of info is likely to be >found on "p. 823"? > > >Index to the War of 1812 Pay Rolls & Muster Rolls: CATALOG CARD: > Elam, Miles. > Muster Rolls, p.823 > Yes, this is from the Library of Virginia collection, but these items are not available in the digitial images library. I don't know exactly what you'll find on p. 823 or any of the rest. Every state was different in the type and amount of information they collected. Some of them are quite detailed. If you think this is your Miles, I would certainly contact them. I wish I could be of more help, but at this point, you know as much about it as I do. Good luck and let us know what you find out. 1. [ELAM-ROOTS] Vanished ELAMs
    2. Are there any ELAM girls that seemed to drop off the face of the earth, were sent away, ran away or vanished for whatever reason? Perhaps were born "on the wrong side of the blanket" or had children born to them under those circumstances? If anyone has any info like this and is courageous enough to address it, please contact me. It may untie a knot I seem to have run into. The timeframe in question is 1860-1900. Thank you. 2. Does anyone have a listing of the slaves the ELAMs of Charlotte Co., VA or of the neighboring counties (most likely Mecklenburg) owned or may have owned? Perhaps a record of any servants they might have had in their employ, for that matter, whether personal/house servants or those who might have worked their farms. I am especially interested in the years from about 1850-1870. Thanks, NP email: NpVA3124@aol.com

    1. Re: [ELAM-ROOTS] Elam materials in the Library of Virginia card catalogue
    2. Cassie, I do not have any of this material, but this Miles ELAM is almost certainly my ancestor and he is as far back as I've gotten on my ELAM side and I can't connect to anyone on the list (I do have hope, though, my Mom just gave me the name of a 2nd cousin who's done research, but no time to contact yet). I'll certainly let the list know as soon as I connect or whatever I find so someone else, who isn't connecting, can connect with me! My questions are these: Where can I find this source? The Library of VA? Is is online in their digital library? And what type of info is likely to be found on "p. 823"? Index to the War of 1812 Pay Rolls & Muster Rolls: CATALOG CARD: Elam, Miles. Muster Rolls, p.823 I'm posting to the list as I'll bet I'm not the only one with these questions. By the way, you do a wonderful job keeping this list active. All my lists are rather slow right now, but I can't complain, because I have NO TIME to work on anything right now...I just figure everyone else must be in the same boat. Ha! Take care, Paula

    1. [ELAM-ROOTS] Deed Poll / Kent Elam
    2. Roger Elam
    3. Kent, In response to your question concerning a deed poll of trust... a poll deed is a deed made by one person or party only, to which he alone is bound, and executed only by himself. Polled deed is an archaic term having to do with the practice of cutting the top or side edge of the deed in a straight line (polled) as opposed to an indenture (deed indented) which cut the parchment or paper in a notched or saw-tooth edge. This was done as a practical matter of distinction. The deed poll of trust that you refer to would record the transfer of title to real property via trustee. There were sometimes other meanings attached to the term deed poll, as found in colonial Pennsylvania. Hope this helps.................Roger ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
