----- Original Message ----- > How do you go about ordering these records? Is there a form to > use & can you do it on the internet? Dear Celia and everyone else with the same question: You have to place an order for NATF Form 80s, which can be done by writing a letter to NARA or sending them an email, giving them the number of forms you need along with your name and snail mail address. You must fill out separate forms (same NAFT80 but you check different boxes) for the pension and for the military records--so if you want both sets of records, be sure to get 2 forms for each ancestor. There is a limit of 6 forms per order. email inquire@nara.gov or snail mail National Archives and Records Administration Attn: NWCTB 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20408-0001 They suggest that you order first the person's pension file, as the military service records rarely contain family information. If there is no pension file, then you should request the military records. If you are getting records on your Revolutionary War veteran, the pension and bounty-land warrant applications are combined and you get both by requesting the pension file only. The requried minimum information you must provide is: Veteran's name What branch of service State he served Which War or dates If it was the Civil War, did he serve Union or Confederate They would also like additional info if you have it, such as: Unit served If Army, was he in Infantry, Cavalry, or Artillery What was his rank What kind of service: Volunteers or Regular Date and place of Birth and Death Name of Widow Place he lived after Service This same form can be used to order bounty-land warrant applications (for Federal service before 1856). This form may not however be used for WWI or WWII records. Normally they copy complete compiled military and bounty-land application files. When they are unable to provide copies of all pension documents due to the size of the pension file, they will send copies of the documents THEY think is most useful to you for genealogical purposes (many documents are repetitive or administrative in nature). You may order the copies of all the remaining documents in the file, by making a specific request; they will notify you of the cost of the additional copies. You do NOT send money with this form, they will send you a letter stating that either they could not find the file you rquested (and therefore no payment is due) or yes they did find it and inform you of the cost. (They will hold your copies for 45 days awaiting your check or money order.) OR, if you gave them your credit card number on the form, the copies will be mailed immediately to you upon them finding the file and they will charge your card then. Here's the website if you need some other information I didn't provide: http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html Hope this helps everyone. Most of it came from an actual form I have. Hope there's a file on everyone's ancestors! I think the MD Aegender/Agners have already been tried and not found. ---Celia Hartmann :o)
