You must keep in mind that we did NOT have a National Army like we do today until World War I. Prior to that soldiers were raised by State Militias. Even today most of the soldiers serving in Kuwait, Kosovo or Bosnia were taken from the State Militias (known better as the National Guard). Some Civil War records are maintained by the respective states while others were sent to the NARA Regional archive as in Washington State. I recommend you find out what records are maintained by NARA (www.nara.gov) and what records are kept by the respective states (try Cyndi's List of Genealogical Sites at www.cyndislist.com or Chris' List of Political and Government Links at www.chrislist.com). You can also try to VA (www.va.gov). I had a Great Uncle who died at the VA Hospital in Walla Walla, WA in 1950. They had his records and were happy to share it with me. Good luck Chris
