I'm finally getting around to commenting on the discrepancy. You have George McDowell's grandfather as James, and we have him as George. Our listing as George comes from the research of Ken Morris (a member of this list). He found a microfilm of the VA Dept. of Health's Bureau of Vital Statistics which stated that James Agner, white male, died 27 May 1883 at Buffalo of dropsy. He was aged 56 years, the son of Geo. and Susan Agner, born in Rockbridge, a farmer, and the husband of Permelia. Son John R. Agner reported the information. This is why we have him listed as a son of George Agner and Susanna Siders. The marriage bond for James and Permelia does not list his parents. George's (the grandfather) will, written 1850 proved 1855, does include "my son James Agner" who received 100 acres of land, including the house. Some places George's (the grandfather) name was spelled Aignor, others Agnor, others Agner. Pretty typical of Rockbridge records concerning our bunch! Other spellings used in Rockbridge included Egner, Egnar, Egnor, Eignor, Eigner, Eigander, Eagnor. Does this help? --Celia :o)
