Please remember any information that these articles may contain should be treated as CLUES to your own research. Any clarifications or comments of my own are placed in [ ]. All typos are mine. =========================== (begin article) EYGNER EAGLE, VOL. VI, NUMBER 12 AUG. 1994 Benjamin Egner, born (according to Arkansas censuses) around 1789 in North Carolina, died 13 June 1867 in Independence County, Arkansas, married Catherine ____________, born 1789 also in NC. Records from Rowan Co. NC show that a Benjamin Agenor married Caty Bullon on 17 Dec 1811. The 1790 Census for Salisbury District [NC] lists George Bullen, Philip Bullen, and John Bullen. (Interestingly, none of the Agner or Bullen listings show slaves.) Rowan Co. court records also show that a Benjamin and a Peter Agender served in the Fourth Co. detached from the Seventh Brigade in the War of 1812. Benjamin had a brother Joseph H. Egner, born around 1792 in NC who is also listed in the censuses for Independence Co. AR until 1860. He arrived there in 1817, when it was still Arkansas County in the Missouri Territory, and he married Euphemia Ferebee of Batesville [AR] 25 Oct 1832; they evidently had no children. Joseph H. Egner served as treasurer and sheriff of Independence Co. and as a director of the state bank branch in Batesville. Catherine and Benjamin Egner farmed at Oil Trough Bottoms AR (named for old wooden troughs used in the early days to transport bear oil down the White and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans). They had: William Egner, born 8 Jul 1817 in Henry Co. KY where they lived for some time. He died 15 April 1894 in Salado AR. He married 1) c1837 Sarah Jane Powell [had 10 children, I have list, if anyone interested; 3 sons lost in Civil War] who was born 13 Aug 1820 in KY and died 20 Jan 1873 in AR. 2) On 5 Apr 1874, Catherine Trammell. [Looks as though they left KY between the birth of two children, Aug 1840 and sometime in 1841] [Much of this information is contained in the book "Sims and Related Families," by William J. Sims, Dallas, 1989.] Later in this issue is more on Joseph H. Egner, from another source Dr. Marion S. Craig, who wrote this time line for Joseph in 1992..... 1817, He arrived in Arkansas County, Missouri Territory (Became Arkansas Territory in 1819) 1820, appears on tax list of Arkansas County, Arkansas Territory (first tax list for this county since the one of 1814). Soon moved to Batesville, which was laid out in 1821 as the county seat of the new county of Independence, which was erected on 23 OCt 1820 from part of Lawrence County, A.T. [Arkansas Territory] 1832-63, He was Sherriff of Indepdence Co, AT 1836-40, He was Treasurer of Indep. Co, STATE of Arkansas 1832 (Oct. 25), He married Miss Euphemia Ferebee of Batesville (formerly of Nofolk VA).....ref: Marriage Book A, page 23 for Indep. Co, AT; Arkansas Advocate: 31 Oct 1832; and Arkansas Gazette: 7 Nov. 1832 1837, He was reported among those killed in the burning of the steamboat, Ben Sherrod, 10 miles above Fort Adams, Miss. (Ref: Arkansas Times and Advocate: 22 May 1837) [in the May 29 issue his obit is listed -- now that would be freaky, to later read your own obit! in the 12 Jun issue both papers announced that he did not die] 1844, there are references to him and his brother Benjamin in the 7 Feb 1844 Batesville North Arkansas Times and the 6 Mar 1844 Arkansas Gazette [this is unclear as to why they are mentioned] 1850 & 1860 appears on censuses. Age 58 in 1850 and age 67 in 1860 After this timeline, Dr. Craigs says "I don't know when or where he died. He, nor his wife, Euphemia, are in the Independence County Cemetery book by Green."
