Have you looked at the court house in Monroe? It has been 10 years or so since I was there and I was not looking for Erskine but they had a lot of wills and other papers at that time that were not in Charleston. They were not taking very good care of them so a lot of the papers have been lost. If you get to Monroe you might give it a look see. I would like to know what happened to Elizabeth Egnor who married Alexander Erskine in 1833. I have a list of her children 6 girls & 2 boys. Celia, No,I would not have thought of looking for other spellings of Egner. A separate Agner list could open up a whole new world of information. The Eagle newsletter could also be very interesting. Who knows what puzzle pieces may show up? Jean :o) -----Original Message----- From: Celia, Ritch, & Beth [mailto:hartmann@bright.net] Sent: Saturday, October 30, 1999 06:29 PM To: EGNER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [A/EGNER] Two Questions I would like to ask our list two questions. You may answer them to me personally (hartmann@bright.net or Gen_Searchin@yahoo.com or direct them to the list. First, mainly for Agner researchers: If you went searching for an "Agner" mail list, would have known, or even thought, to look under Egner? Second, for everyone: Would you be interested in articles from the old Eygner Family Association's newsletter called the Eagle? (This family association was in use from 1986 to 1995 or so and was a snail mail version of our mail list, covering all variants/all time-periods). Reason for #1: I am thinking of starting an Agner mailing list, just in case any researchers looking for such a list do not know to look under Egner. While Agner and Egner can mean two separate lines, some Agner lines became Egner or Egnor. I am concerned about Agner researchers not knowing to look under Egner. Our current list would still be the main mail list and I would tell ones who signed up for the Agner to please join the Egner instead. I don't want to miss anyone. Reason for #2: I have some issues of the old Eagle newsletters. I have permission from the editor to post articles to our list, in hopes that may give some clues to various researchers. Realize though, that the information in these articles is someone else's research and may contain inaccuracies. They are useful to use as clues and they did cover many lines. I thought maybe I could post one, maybe two if short, articles a week, when the list is slow--I don't want to overload mail boxes. I look forward to hearing your response. --Celia H., list owner ==== EGNER Mailing List ==== Visit the Egner/Agner resource page: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/e/g/EGNER/ Post your Queries, Bible Records, Bios, Deeds, Obits, Pensions, and Wills on the appropriate GenConnect Board: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/e/g/EGNER/#gc ============================== RootsWeb.com now offers UNLIMITED Web space for FREE! ----- Original Message ----- From: <DVS1119@aol.com> > I found that Joh. Matheis Egener arriving 9/30/1727 - Ship: Molly This is correct, Doris. Johann Mathias Egner arrived in Philadelphia on September 30, 1727 on the Molly, the third Palatine German ship. Mathias Egner has been pretty well researched, but there is more to be done. His line stayed mostly in eastern (Berks, Lehigh, Northampton area) PA. Though I do think--no proof--that it is his son Jacob that shows in Rowan NC records as early as 1753 (about the same time as the Aegender/Agner line). Jacob is usually attributed to being Johannes Aegender's son. There are some of Mathias' grandsons and great grandsons we never could find, and I think they may have started the Cecil County, MD line and the Richland/Ashland Co, Ohio lines. The one grandson that went to western PA looks to have never had children. Often, Ludwig Aegender is attributed to being Mathias' son (published in many PA books); this is simply not accurate. Because Ludwig stayed in the Northampton area after his father and siblings went to Rowan and is mentioned in a church that one of Mathias' sons used briefly, researchers assumed he was another son of Mathias, as there was no other family around using a similar name. However, Mathias' will, found this summer by Carol who is on this list, lists his children, including two deceased daughters. So now you all can see where some of the confusion began.....we have an Aegender attributed to being an Egner and possibly an Egner attributed to being an Aegender! Carol, Patsy, and I are no longer researching this family as we no longer think our line comes from his. Ours is a case of an Agner name getting changed to Egnor when they moved to a different area. Now if we could just find that one little document that proves all of our circumstantial evidence............... --Celia Hartmann :o)
I'd like to see the old group's information. Thanks
I look forward to your postings of the Eagle articles. I am sure that an Agner list would be helpful. It is certainly possible that the evolution may have went either way. Agner to Egner or Egner to Agner. Jim
DEAR CUZ.. GO FOR IT ON THE AGNOR MAILING LIST WITH ROOTSWEB...CONSIDERING THIS PAST SUMMER WE FOUND OUT THAT THE EGNOR'S OF W.VA WERE CONNECTED TO THE AGNOR'S OF ROCKBRIDGE CO. VIRGINIA... THIS WAY BOTH GROUPS COULD COME TOGETHER AND SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT BOTH FAMILIES... WITH THE VARIANTS ON THE TWO NAMES NOONE WOULD HAVE EVEN LOOKED UNDER EGNER FOR ANYTHING ON THE AGNOR'S AND VICE VERSA.... WE SHOULD KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE.. WE HAVE DEALT WITH THIS FOR THE PAST 11 MONTHS WHILE DOING ARE RESEARCH ON ARCHILBALD'S PARENTS...LOL... I THINK POSTING THE STUFF FROM EAGLES. IS A VERY GOOD IDEA ALSO.... THIS ARTICLES DO PROVE ALOT OF CLUES INTO THE EGNOR'S AND AGNOR'S FAMILIES OF AMERICA..... ALSO I WOULD LIKE TOO BRING THIS UP TO THE GROUP CONCERNING OBT'S... I WAS AT THE W.VA STATE ARCHIVES OVER THE WEEKEND AND WAS GOING TO GET COPIES OF ALL SAMUEL EGNOR'S KIDS OBTS.. AND POST THEM.. BUT COULDNT HARDLY FIND ANY OF THEM.. I HAVENT GIVE UP HOPE... I FOUND ONE FOR JAMES SHELTON EGNOR...IF ANY BODY HAS OBT ON ONE OF THE EGNOR KIDS...POST IT ON THE OBT PAGE... THIS WAY WE CAN SEE THEM AND GET A LOT OF USEFUL INFORMATION ON THE FAMILY....AND PEOPLE CAN ALSO LEARN ABOUT THE FAMILY TOO.... I WAS LOOKING YESTERDAY AND FOUND OUT THAT MY GRANDMOTHER EFFIE MERLE EGNOR <ADKINS> WAS LAST OF SAMUEL'S KIDS TO PASS AWAY... SHE OUT LIVED ALL OF HER BROTHERS AND SISTERS... IM CLOSING.... IVE SAID ENOUGH FOR KNOW...LOL.... TAKE CARE.. Yes, I would be interested in seeing articles from the old Eygner Family Association's newsletter.
I would not have thought to look for Egner when researching my Agners. An Agner list would be great. Thank you. Celia, 1. Knowing RootsWeb, I think your best bet is to create an Agner list. I would never have thought to look for Egner. 2. If you have copyright permission, it is definitely worth getting those articles on line. They may help someone now and they will be in the archives so they may help someone else later. But make sure that you have the copyright permission in writing because of RootsWeb rules. john. At 08:28 PM 10/30/1999 -0400, you wrote: >I would like to ask our list two questions. "If you went searching for an "Agner" mail list, would have known, or even thought, to look under Egner?" When I first started looking I found the name in the Rowan Co. NC History book. I don't even remember what the spelling was of the first time I found the ancestor. I found several spellings: Eignor, Agender, Agner, Eigern or something. I settled on Agner because that is what the present-day people in the book used. I think I looked on the net in Switchboard or something. When I looked on Rootsweb I don't know what I found, I just found you. To answer your question, I really don't know. I don't know how prevalent the names are. "Would you be interested in articles from the old Eygner Family Association's newsletter called the Eagle?" Yes, I think I would. Pat McAlister

Celia: I think it would be a good idea to lead the Agner's. It took me a while to figure out my Andrew because once he went to WV he became Egnor and I just didn't think about the connection (after all his father was Agner). Doris
