    3. Patsy, I would really like to have a copy of the marriage information about Samuel and Mary Grubb Egner. I would be glad to pay any costs associated with obtaining it. What ship did Johannes Agender travel on from Switzerland? IThe year he came to the U.S. could provide some hint of why he might have left Europe. Is there any information about the name of his wife? Thanks for your message. This is really interesting information. 3. Evelyn, Thanks so much. My wife's linage is through Samuel son of Jacob and Elizabeth. Cool. I can fill in a few items. Edward Lee Egnor, son of Samuel Newberry Egnor and Sarah McKeehan married Ida Smith in McDowell Co., WV abt 1916, had 8 children, 4 dying in infancy. Ida died when she was 28 years old and is burried on a mountain top overlooking Pocohantis (sp?) VA. Edward's half brother was Elijah, who settled somewhere around Harlan, KY. Do you know where in North Carolina that Samuel from Germany lived? There seems to be some coincidence in that according to various posts recently there were other Samuels married to Mary Polly's, or maybe someone out there can clarify this. This is just really neat. When I visited my mother-in-law this past fall, she could only remember about the family back to Samuel Newberry Egnor. Note, that the spelling changed from his father to him. Don't know how that happened. Oh yes, Edward Lee Egnor was born in Boyd, KY according to the marriage Certificate. Do you know any info on that? I have copies of photos of Samuel Newberry, Sarah McKeehan, Edward Lee, and Ida lifted from the handle of a pocket knike that Edward Lee Egnor carried. It was his prize possession. The knife is now with Maurice Lee Terry, Grandson of Edward. Once again, Thanks so much, Jim Davis

    3. Dave, You are right. The McNeil/Gillis Cemetery is on that road. I have never been all the way to Corn Creek by that road. When I lived there, we went to Corn Creek through Woodbine. Do you ever expect to get back to Whitley Co. again? I would love to meet you there and show you and you wife the sights I am familiar with. 1. [EGNER] WHITLEY CO., KY., EGNERS
    2. Evelyn E. Watson
    3. Here goes. Let's begin with old Samuel Egner. According to my father Edgar M. Egner (and this may be anecdotal rather than verifiable), Samuel was born in Germany in 1793. He came to North Carolina about 1803. Did he come with family? I do not know. He married Mary Grubb (called Polly) before he came to Whitley Co., KY, where he settled on land in what is now called Faber. He built a log cabin where my father was born. They had only one child Jacob born between 1814 and 1816. Jacob married Elizabeth (Betsy) Bishop 7 Nov 1833. I have information supposedly giving Elizabeth as the daughter of William Bishop who was a prominent settler in Whitley Co., but I think it misses a generation because Elizabeth was too young. I think she must have been William's granddaughter. Someday I may make that connection. Jacob and Betsy had the following children: Samuel Junior b. abt 1835, Mary b. 1837, John b 15 Jan 1839, William H., b. 1841, Elizabeth (Lizzie), b 15 Feb 1846, and Roshannah (Rosie), b. 1848. Jacob died in 1848 and Elizabeth married William Taylor 25 Oct 1860. Elizabeth died in 1873. Samuel Junior married Mary Howell 5 Dec 1855. Mary married Jackson Sammons 25 Aug 1852. John (my great-grandfather) married Eveline Underwood in 1860, William H. married Eleanor (Ellen) Underwood 16 Dec 1861. Eveline and Ellen Underwood were sisters, making their children double first cousins. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Egner married Andrew Jackson (Jack) Grubb 13 Mar 1870. Roshannah (Rosie) married Hiram Steele. Again according to my father, Samuel Jr. was buried on the farm on the west side of the railroad. Mary, John, William, Elizabeth, and Roshannah were all buried in the Old Egner Cemetery. Samuel Junior and Mary had the following children: John R. (several people have him as either John H. or John B.) b. 1858, Sophia b. 11 Jun 1859, William H. b 10 Jun 1861, and Samuel Newberry, b 1862. For Jim Davis's benefit, Samuel Newberry who married Sarah (Sally) McKeehan also married Drusilla Poole. He and Sarah had Jane who married Columbus Barnett, Florence who married Jim Ben Reynolds and Ab Orick, Edward Lee who married ?? Smith, Bert (who died young), Mack who married Mallissie Harp, Omer who married Eva Blanche Perkins, and Harlen who maried Maude Lay. Samuel Newberry and Drusilla Poole had one son Elijah. They lived in Cairo, IL. Mary and Jackson Sammons had nine children and I have their names and many of their lines. If any of those on the list trace to this family, I can give more information. John and Eveline Egner had one son Andrew Thomas (my grandfather). They lived and farmed the old homestead. Andrew Thomas (A. T. or Tom) married Dora Salina Moore. Tom worked for the railroad and had no interest in the farm. Sometime after my father was born in 1903, he sold the place. My father who loved the land always regretted it, but it had been broken up into so many pieces that he could not buy it back. Tom and Dora had four children who lived to maturity: Irma Jane, Bessie Bryan, Edgar Mattison, and Iva Faye. All of them are deceased, but all left descendents except Irma. Edgar Mattison married Bertha Mae Mayfield and they had four children: Alvin Thomas (died at 6 mo. of age), Virginia Evelyn (me), Molly Eileen, and David Blaine (died of cancer in 1989). I married Earl Greene Watson of Whitley Co. and we have two adult children, a daughter and a son. Molly married Sidney Bruce Baker of Pineville, KY and they have two adult sons. David Blaine left two daughters and two sons. One son has a son and a daughter, the other son has two daughters. We are getting low on the Egner name. William H. Egner and Eleanor (Ellen) Underwood Egner had the largest family of all. Their children were: Elizabeth b. abt 1863, Nannie b. abt 1864, Polly, b abt 1866, Sarah b. abt 1868, William (called Windy Bill) b abt 1870, James, Nervia, Alphia, b abt 1875, Johnnie, Samuel, Grace (Dave's g-g-g-grandmother) b. 15 Jun 1884, and Calvin. I have a lot of information about these different families. (Dave, most of it is in the Underwood book.) William H. and Eleanor are buried in a vault at the Egner Cemetery, Faber, no marker. Elizabeth married Samuel Hugh Carr 1 Sep 1887, but died as a young woman from a strange accident. She was standing near the Laurel River when she was stung by a hornet, fell into the river, and drowned. Nannie never married. Polly married Boerguard Andrews, J. M. Owens, and a Jones. Sarah married a Noe. William married Sally Kelsey. James and Nervia never married. Johnny died young. Calvin who lived in Cincinnati, OH, married twice. His children were Woodrow, Clinton, and Glenn by his first marriage and Emlie, Nadine, James and Arthur by his second marriage. I am sure Dave has much more information than I about Grace who married James F. (Jim) Henson 19 Jan 1907 in Corbin, KY. Elizabeth (Aunt Lizzie as my father called her) Egner maried Andrew Jackson (Jack) Grubb. They had 7 children. I have information on them if anyone on he list traces to the Grubbs. Roshannah (called Aunt Rosie by my father) married Hiram Steele, but apparently there were no children. My father had the names, etc.of many of the descendents for the families tracing from Samuel Egner who came into Whitley Co. If anyone has questions about any of them, please let me know. Evelyn

    3. Now I am the one confused - about the location of the Old Egner Cemetery, that is. I know where the cemetery is. It is on the property that originally belonged to Samuel Egner. No Egner has owned it in many years. It is part of what is called Faber and is off Highway 26 to your right as you are going north toward Corbin. The McNeil Corn Creek Road which is between Rockholds and Faber will not get you to the Egner Cemetery. Jacob may be buried in the cemetery. If so, he has no marker, and when my father listed the graves he gave no account of it. Jacob died sometime around 1848. I have a bill of sale of the person estate of Jacob Egner deceased Dec. 29, 1848 to wit. At the end of the list of items sold is the following statement: The foregoing bill of sale is a correct exhibit of the Property and Sale hereof Constituting the Personal Estate of Jacob Egner deceased. Was this day proved in open Court and after being examined and approved of by the Court was ordered to be recorded and this is done accordingly. Given under my hand this 16th day of April 1849. Att. A. Williams clerk. Several items were purchased by Betsy Egner (Jacob's widow Elizabeth Bishop Egner). Also items were purchased by Samuel Egner. This must have been Jacob's father because although Jacob had a son Samuel (called Samuel Junior) he would have been about 13 years old. As Dave noted on the marker, old Samuel Egner lived until 1872. I am getting ready to send a message to the list with the names of the early family. As to Eveline Day, I wish I could remember who she was. All I remember about her was that when I was probably 2 or 3 years old my Grandfather Egner (Andrew Thomas) used to bounce me on his knee and call Eveline Day my "sake-aline" and make me very angry. I was named for Evelyn Underwood Egner (John Egner's wife) who was my great-grandmother. 3. Hi Jim, I'm glad you understand it--will you explain it to me?? What about this other(?) Jacob and Mary? Did that turn out to be someone different? The Old Egner cemetery is about midway between Rockholds and Faber, east of highway 26. I think it's off of McNeil Corn Creek Rd. (that's the way Delorme has it labeled--locals may call it something else). There is a single stone, with three names on it. Samuel Egner 1793-1872; Mary Polly Grubb 1794-1873; and Elizabeth Bishop 1814-1873. According to my notes, Samuel was Mary Polly Grubb's husband, and Jacob was Elizabeth Bishop's husband. Other Egners buried there include Evelyn Egner 1/18/1840-2/22/1924, wife of John; John Egner 1/15/1839-11/5/1898, son of Jacob and Elizabeth; Infant Babe of A.T. Egner & Wife, b&d 5/15/1897; and Eveline Day 3/22/1871-1/9/1938, the relationship of whom I don't know. There are undoubtedly others, but many of the stones are missing or in poor condition. It seems unlikely that Jacob would be there, with his wife sharing the tombstone of her son and daughter-in-law. (I do have that relationship right now? I have been a little confused about that.) My great grandmother was Grace E. Egner, who was one of the 12 children of William Egner and Eleanor Underwood. Jacob and Elizabeth Bishop were William's parents, and thus, my 3rd great grandparents. I took some pictures at the cemetery. Can't put a finger on them right now, but let me know if you're interested in seeing them and I'll locate and send them to you. 3. hi doris.... wow i ddnt know that andrew egnor was john's jr grandson....do you know who his parents were by any chance? you wont happen too know when and where john jr passed away do you... we think its around 1830...he doesnt show up on the taxes for monroe co.. if we can find this information out then we can prove that archibald egnor is john jr son... his mom would have been barbara last name unknown at this time.... this would have been john jr's first wife...we know that john's third wife mary/polly went from fuller-young-agner.. she shows up on the 1830 census for monroe co. with daughter.... supposely this elizabeth egnor who married alexander erskine.... they were living beside of archibald egnor... we find mary/polly age 60 one more time in the census and that is in 1850 living with george gullett age 40 and rebecca gullett age 40... we still dont know why she was living with them at the time.... after 1850 we lose her again along with the gullett people... patsy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 2. Patsy: Andrew's parents were John "Sly John", III and Elizabeth Wilhelm. Andrew was apparently out in WV visiting relatives and friends and then he married Susan Harris (her family came from Rockbridge also). Andrew & Susan returned to Rockbridge and show up there for the 1860 census. By 1870, they are in Blue Sulphur Springs and then on to Green Sulphur Springs and up the Sewell Mountain. They stayed there until she died and he went to Pence Springs to live with one of the children. Doris

    1. Re: [EGNER] Rockbridge Cty VA Agnors
    2. My records, which came from my Mother's memory shows a Samuel Agnor who was married to a Cummings(I don't have her first name, my records show that she died young). Samuel's Father was James Agnor, Jr. married to Pamelia Parker. Samuel's Grandfather was James Agner ( note the spelling change). Samuels siblings were Macie, Robert, Annie Jane, Martha Ellen, Edmonia, Susan and George McDowell Agnor ( my Great Grandfather}. George was born in 1854 and died in 1924, his grave is in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Lexington, VA.George had 11 children, one was my Grandfather Harry Bruce Agnor. Again let me repeat this info came from my Mothers memory which seemed to be very good even in her last year at 90.

James, Samuel Preston was brother to your George McDowell Agnor. So you guys are cousins! Greer, is one of the children listed here your Grandfather? Or are we missing him altogether? I have more on Samuel's ancestors, just too much for this email. ---Celia Hartmann :o) Samuel Preston6 Agnor (James5, George4, John3, Ludwig2, Johannes1), (twin to Martha C.) born 30 September 1861, died 24 May 1944. 3. Celia: My grandfather was Charles Fletcher Cummings, married to Margaret Hayslett, so that is the right line, but the catch is that Samuel P. Agnor was his stepfather. According to family tradition, he is the son of another Agnor who was never named more than just as an Agnor. I would sure like to find out who he was. All of the people around here who might have known are deceased, so it is a mystery. I am certainly related to all of Samuel P.'s descendants through his marriage to my ggrandmother, but there is no direct relationship since my grandfather was the son of a different unknown Agnor. Thanks for your help. Greer ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: <NSchear@aol.com> > Re:Fanny Egner,Craig Moor, West Va. > Where is your line from? Since my Fanny married James Wright about this > same time. Fanny/Hannah are similar. Kathy Kathy, We think this is Vaughn's line, but not sure--much more research needs done on the line. This family was formerly out of Rockbridge Co, VA: Jacob 5 AGNER, Jr., (Jacob 4 , John 3 , Ludwig 2 , Johannes 1 ), born c1813. He married 21 January 1838, Mary "Polly" DAY, Rev. Wm. M. Cunningham officiating. Polly was born c1817. She was a daughter of Thomas Day. Jacob was a cooper by trade. Jacob began to show in the Rockbridge County, VA personal Property Tax Lists in 1836. In 1840, Jacob's household consisted of one male under age 5; one male aged 20-30; one female aged 20-30. The male born 1810-20 was Jacob; the female born 1810-1820 was Polly; the male born 1835-40 was their son Joseph. By 1850, Jacob and Mary were found living in the northern section of Rockbridge County, VA with their children Joseph, Elizabeth and Sodonia. Their daughter Mary was not found in their household. She was living with her Agner grandparents in 1850. In 1870, a Jacob Agner appears in Clay Township of Ritchie County, WV. More research needs done on this family to determine if it is the same one from Rockbridge. Jacob and Polly had at least the following children: i. Joseph 6 AGNER, born c1839, died 15 December 1862, killed in battle at Fredericksburg, VA. CSA. ii. Elizabeth 6 AGNER, born c1842. iii. Sordonia 6 P. AGNER, born c1845. iv. Mary 6 AGNER born c1843. She lived with her grandparents in 1850. Mary was devised $30.00 in her grandfather, Jacob Agner's, last will and testament. v. William 6 AGNER born c1853. 242 vi. Jacob 6 AGNER, born 15 April 1855. As you can see, there is a big gap where other children could have been born.
