    1. [EGNER] New Info for Monroe Co Va/WV!!!!!
    2. Celia, Ritch, & Beth
    3. Angie, Carol, Patsy, etc........... My sister-in-law Dory found this awesome list! Check out the details below my message. If only it could have told us the age and parents of that Jonathon Egnor. This could be a brother to our Archibald or could it be Arch himself? He would have been 15 in 1826, that's school age though his age may be why he doesn't show up again. We have discussed before that perhaps Arch's name was really John, until we found out that John Jr. already had a son named John (aka Sly John). Would John Jr. name a child John and then name another child Jonathan? This list also gives us another child for Michael Siders--Andrew; I think we had Sally and Susan already. For the Erskines, James and Ellenor (Leake) Erskine did have a child named Adeline, but the age is off. And they also had a child John. They must have also had sons named Alexander and Henry unless someone wrote the wrong father down! Well, this gives us more questions than answers, but is still an exciting find! Way to go, Dory! --Celia :o) School Children, 1820-1830 - Monroe Co. WV http://c-23.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/wv/monroe/misc/studnts1.txt Note: This information was taken from tuition receipts (small, torn scraps of paper)which was difficult to read. Most children attended school for 61 days per year. The tuition was $6-8 per child. The teachers were paid $1.80 per child. The original receipts are at West Virginia University in Morgantown. 3. Ann, I am Margie Fenley Hartman. Very close cousins to Celia2, Nimmo, and Phillip Dean. My gggggrans were Peter and Catherine Elizabeth Rough Egner/Agner of Rowan County, North Caroline (married 10/21/1809). Their son, Nathanial, born ca 1812 in N.C, was my ggggrandfather. In around 1818-1822 the Agner/Egner family moved to Calloway County (or general vacinity) Kentucky. Nathanial married Nancy Carpenter (daughter of Owen and Martha Carpenter) on Feb. 2, 1831 in Calloway County, Ky. In 1834, Nathanial and Nancy, had a daughter named Elizabeth (my gggrandmother). Elizabeth Ann Egner married Richard S. Evans (B. North Carolina) on 24 Feb. 1849. They moved around in several states and ended up in Van Buren County Arkansas. On May 5, 1866, my ggrandmother (Elizabeth's) last child, Exie Sophronia, was born. Sophronia's youngest daughter, Magnolia Evans Birmingham, was my mother. I want to compliment you for caring for your mother. My mother, had she lived, would have been 100 this year. I too cared for my mother in her last years. How I wish I had her here to care for her now. Mom has been gone 18 years and I still tear up when I mention her name. What a wonderful woman. I like to think she must have inherited some of that pioneer spirit from "our" Egner/Agners. 3. Welcome Ann, My name is Phillip "Dean" Egner and as you can guess by the name and the response to this list, I am researching Egner. Most of mine are in Western KY (Marshall, Graves, Calloway, McCracken etc) but they came from NC, just haven't made the connection yet. I am fairly new to the list and have only just gotten back into genealogy the last couple months after quite a very years absent. Right now my job ties me up during the week and some on weekends but that will change here soon. Some of the other names are Edwards (married an Egner), Burnett, Harper, Garnett, Wyatt and it just goes on, all in Western KY and some TN. Hope someone can help you in your quest. 3. I thought this might of interest for us Genealogist where family lived around 1900. Dean >From a book called "When My Grandmother Was a Child" by Leigh W. Rutledge, which begins, "In the summer of 1900, when my grandmother was a child..." -The average life expectancy in the United States was forty-seven. -Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. -Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. -There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was ten mph. -Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. -The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Towel. -The average wage in the US was twenty-two cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. -A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. -More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. -Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." -Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. -Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. -Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. -The five leading causes of death in the US were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. -The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. -Drive-by shootings--in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy--were an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities in the West. -The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. -Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. -There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. -One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. -Some medical authorities warned that professional seamstresses were apt to become sexually aroused by the steady rhythm, hour after hour, of the sewing machine's foot pedals. They recommended slipping bromide--which was thought to diminish sexual desire--into the women's drinking water. -Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." -Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. -Punch-card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. -Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. -There were about 230 reported murders in the US annually.

She found it on Ancestry.com and I checked GenealogyLibrary.com and found it there too. Erskine, Alexander VA MONROE CO. 153 1840 We need the numbers to determine if this is our Alex or his cousin. Ours should have been about 29 then, but then he has given flaky ages for the other censuses. He and Elizabeth would have only had 2 girls and maybe 1 boy then, all under 5. Perhaps you can put this in your "For Future Reference" pile for when you are ready to work on Egner genealogy. I hope it helps, though everything I have is before the time period you need. This Ohio line is a mystery as to where it came from, but we highly suspect that it is from the Johann Mathias Egner line out of Berks (now Lehigh) county PA. 3. Dear Greer, I apologize for not getting you unsubscribed sooner. I just sent the request in, so you should have confirmation soon. I am sorry to see you go, but I do understand. I myself have been swamped with mail and research on other lines lately, and I too had to cut back on some of the ones I subscribed to. I do wish you luck in your genealogical efforts and especially I hope that you are able to find the real story of your biological great-grandfather. I will certainly keep an eye out for such a story. Would you like me to add a brief bit about your story on my Egner/Agner Contacts page? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hartmann/egnor-contacts.html That way if anyone stumbles across my site and the story sounds familiar, they can email you. Just give a holler if you want added. Again, good luck. And thank you so much for contributing to the st. ---Celia Hartmann, list manager ----- Original Message ----- From: greer stene <gstene@hotmail.com> To: <EGNER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2000 11:29 AM Subject: [EGNER] reluctantly unsubscribe > Hi, Celia, > > I have appreciated being able to read all the correspondence about the > Egnor/Agnor line.
