    3. Hello Listers! Just my weekly (or thereabouts) update to let you know the list is alive. There are 33 of us listers now. We seem to get a couple each week; that's great! The more the merrier. So far, that I know, we have people researching lines in the following states: KY, MD, OH, PA, NC, NY, SC, VA, and WV. Hope to hear from the 5 or 6 people on the list that I don't know who they are researching yet. I've asked Chris on the list to post some helpful tips from time-to-time to tell us how to better preserve our important documents. We all have documents that we'd like to keep around. I encourage everyone to post transcriptions of wills, bios, pension papers, etc. to our board. (Follow the link in the tag below.) Hope to hear from you! --Celia Hartmann, List Owner :o)

I just received from my father's second wife an obituary printed on newsprint in 1893. The paper was folded and basically fell apart when I unfolded it. In addition, my father (Roy Egner) at some point used scotch tape to repair tears. This would have been done many years ago, and needless to say, the tape damaged the paper. It has discolored the paper and where the tape is still attached has made it very brittle. The obit contains a lot of family information going back to 1820 on the Hendry side of the family (my father's maternal parentage) plus an etching of my gggrandfather and I would like to preserve it. Any suggestions on what I can do?? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate any additional Egner information, but am still diligently working on it. 2. Priscilla Reinowski
    3. Jean, Can you figure out the name and data of the newspaper in which the obituary was originally published? If so, using that information, check a reference book, "Newspapers On Microfilm," that hopefully lists availability on microfilm of that particular publication. Listings are by state and town. If that issue is on microfilm you can obtain a printout of the original article from that source. Or, if you determine the name and date of the newspaper that contained the obituary, contact the public library nearest the place of publication. They should be able to help you locate that newspaper on microfilm. Good luck, Priscilla

They all should have experience in preservation. The other thing is: type up--word for word--anything you can read before something else happens to it! What a treasure! Good luck and let us know what they say. I have some, not so old, that I sould probably preserve. Didn't really think of it before now. 1. [A/EGNER] FL Agners from SC?
    2. Celia, Ritch, & Beth
    3. FYI: Looking at the LDS' Ancestral Files, I see that the the FL Agners seem to come from SC. They seem to have originated from a John Agner born about 1796 who settled in Abbeville, SC. This is only a couple counties west of Newberry County, where George Agner/Egner of NC settled. I wonder if this John was a son of his? If he is, he is not mentioned in George's estate sale in 1797 (SC George died before July 28, 1796). He could be however a son of George's son David or George. (In looking again, George Jr. didn't have a son named John it seems and neither did David! Hmmm... Another mystery.) Any FL or SC researchers out there that can shed some light? --Celia Hartmann, List Owner Gen_Searchin@yahoo.com or hartmann@bright.net

    1. [A/EGNER] William Sackett and Rachel Lisle of Putnam Co., OH
    2. John B. Lisle
    3. Celia Hartmann suggested that I join this list as I have been researching the descendants of John Lisle of Franklin Co., OH. His youngest daughter Rachel married William Sackett and migrated to Putnam Co., OH about 1833. Two of their daughters married into the George Agner family. If anyone is interested, I have a small temporary website documenting most of my data on this family. Please write privately for the URL as it is temporary and do not wish to document the location in the archives. I am interested in learning more about this family and the Sackett and Agner ancestors. Thanks, John B. Lisle Burlington, MA

    1. [A/EGNER] Aegender/Agner Name Variants......
    2. Celia, Ritch, & Beth
    3. One of our listers asked the following question, off the list: Do you know if the Rockbrigde Aignor/Agner/Aegender family had a preferred spelling? I realize there isn't likely to be much consistency in the documents of the period, but I was curious if you knew how the name evolved. I thought others might be interested in knowing the answer, so I thought I'd give a shot at it to the entire list. She is right in that there seems to be little consistency in the documents. We have over 50 variants of the name! When Johannes Aegender first arrived at Philadelphia in 1731, he was required to sign his name on two passenger lists. We are lucky, he did not sign with an X. In both lists the signature looks like Johannes Agender, only the A has an unusual umlaut over it. Instead of the usual two dots, Johannes' is like a the short vowel mark--kinda like a u. (BTW, these signatures match his power of attorney, written in NC, shortly before his death--only it looks more like Agnder) When Rupp wrote his book on the PA Germans, he interpreted the name as Aegender, only it's that funky AE that are merged together, and really one letter. Other authors interpreted as Egender or Egenter. At his naturalization in 1747, the author listed it as Eigenter. Once he gets to what is now Lehigh County--then Bucks, the church records show a few variants, like Egener or Agener. (The records of Bucks/Lehigh are often confused with another immigrant by the name of Johan Mathias Egner--his family generally kept the Egner name, but I have some instances where a document spelled it Agner, etc.) When Johannes and his son Henry settle in Rowan Co, NC, the name was generally spelled Agenor/Agener or Agender or Aginder, early on. In some case Eggender or Agendar. And in a couple cases, the more traditional Agner. By about 1800, the name was fairly consist of being Agner or Agnor. (The records of Rowan may also be confused, as there is a Jacob Egner who appears there, whom I believe to be the eldest son of Johan Mathias Egner f Bucks/Lehigh) At the same time Johannes and Henry were in Rowan, Johannes' son Ludwig remained in what is now Northhampton PA for awhile, then moved onto what is now Washington Co, Maryland. In these places the name became Egender, Agener/Aegener, or Aigner. In some cases, Igender, Igonder, Igantor, Eigener, Eagoner or Eagner. In one case in 1790, the name took on it's more traditional spelling as Agner. The earliest spellings of Ludwig's son John in Rockbridge, seem to be Eigander or Aignor, then by the 1820s the name was Eigner/Eignor with the beginnings of Agner/Agnor or Egnor. Meanwhile, about the same time, Ludwig's grandson George in Ohio seems to have always used the Agner spelling. And of course, in all these timeperiods, in various documents, other spellings were of course used as well. But in the end, the spelling that was used most often--in NC, VA, or OH--became Agner. A few branches became Agnor or Egnor. Please note this only applies to the Aegender line. There are different lines with the Egner, Egnor, Agner, Aigner/Aignor, and Egender names. Not all these are variants of the Aegender name, but are legitimate in their own right, with their own immigrant ancestor. We have not attempted to trace the Johannes Aegender line into Switzerland to see how it was spelled there. Hope this helps someone! --Celia Hartmann, List Owner

    1. [A/EGNER] Re: Margaret Aignor (Aegender/Agner)
    2. Celia, Ritch, & Beth
    3. Hello Cousin Kerry! There are several of us on the list working on the Rockbridge line right now and the Siders line is one area we could use some help on. We would love to include any documenation or research you may have concerning Margaret and John Siders. We've scraped up a little, but would love to have more! Of course, you would be given credit for being the source of that information! Here's what we have to date. Margaret was the daughter of John Aegender (Igender, Iginter, Eagoner, Eigander, Agner) who was the son of Ludwig Aegender (Aigner, Agner) who was the son of Johannes Aegender (Eigender, Agender, Agner) who arrived in Philadelphia on 21 Sep 1731. We believe he was from Switzerland, for his power of attorney written shortly before his death concerning his maternal and paternal inheritance. Probably about half the subscribers on this list descend from either Ludwig or his brother Henry Aegender--though some of us are still looking for the proof! So you got a lot of cousins here! Including me, I descend from Margaret's brother John. 26. Margaret AGNOR, (John 3 , Ludwig 2 , Johannes 1 ), born between 1775 and 1794 in MD, probably 1788/89. She married in Rockbridge County, Virginia 15 August 1811, to John SIDERS, G. A. Baxter officiating. John was born between 1775 and 1794. John seems to have been a son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Wolfe) Siders, brother to George; Michael who married Susanna Agner; Henry who married Catherine Muterspaugh; Susannah who married George Agner; and Elizabeth who married John Tribbett. John Siders died 16 Sep 1869, aged 78 years 11 months 13 days, Springfield, Twp, Gallia County, OH. If this is indeed the same John Siders, he was born c1791 according to his age at death. In 1820, John Siders' household consisted of three males under age 10, two females under age 10, one male aged 26-45, and one female aged 26-45. Another male aged 26-45 was in their household, and two members of the household were foreigners. In 1830, this family had apparently migrated to Richland County, OH. (according to a John Siders found in census) In 1840, John Siders appears in Marion County, OH Census Index. In 1850, John Siders appears in Fulton County Ohio, according to the Census Index. John and Margaret supposedly migrated to Gallia County, OH, where they are assumed to have died. Further research is needed on this family. Their children follow: 72 i. George SIDERS born 14 Feb 1812, Rockbridge Co., VA., died 14 Mar 1900, Springfield Twp, Gallia, OH. He is buried at Pine Hill Cem, Gallia, OH. George Siders appears in Fulton County, OH in the 1850 Census Index. 73 ii. Mary SIDERS born 1816, Rockbridge Co., VA. iii. Martha SIDERS born 1818 Rockbridge Co., VA. iv. William SIDERS born 1820 Rockbridge Co., VA. 76 v. Joseph SIDERS born 1822 Rockbridge Co., VA. Joseph Siders appears in Fulton County, OH in the 1850 Census Index. 77 vi. John SIDERS born 1825 Rockbridge Co., VA. John Siders, Jr appears in Fulton County, OH in the 1850 Census Index. 78 vii. Susanah SIDERS born 1833 Rockbridge Co., VA. [An Isaac Siders also appears in Fulton County, OH 1850 Census Index.] I think that's about it for her directly. As you can see, we need alot of help figuring out the Siders. We have much more on her siblings and ancestors. Like I said we are in the process of documenting the Aegenders. We hope to someday publish it! Therefore we are gathing as much documentation and information as we can on the lines. We hope to carry it to 6 to 7 generations where we can. Your Margaret is 4th generation. So if you have anything you would like to contribute, we'd love to use it--you will be given credit for the source of the information you provide. If you contact me off the list, I'd be happy to give you an address in which things can be sent, or if you have a scanner you can email attachments to me personally (JPG, TIF, etc.). Or if things aren't in great shape, they can be transcribed and submitted. Welcome aboard, cousin! Look forward to working with you on this line. --Celia, List Owner ----- Original Message ----- From: Kerry <kbhend@accesshub.net> To: <EGNER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 20, 1999 7:12 PM > I'm looking for the parents of Margaret Aignor who was born Abt. 1788 in Rockbridge County, VA. 3. No matches but you might want to take a look at: http://gozips.uakron.edu/~agould Click on Anthony Ray Goulds Genealogy Page There are about 80 or 90 Abbott's on this page from 1740's to 1927. James Abbott b.? 1740's Joseph Abbott b. abt 1766 John Allen Abbott b. 31 Oct 1801 Braden Allen Abbott b. 16 May 1835 Julie Ann Abbott b. 30 Jan 1869 My GGgrandmother There are many Egnor's on this site also. I can supply you with a PAF or a GedCom file of a copy of the Aegendener line 1693-1908 containing about seventeen hundred entries for Agnor,Egnor,Egner & etc. Later Cuz Dick Gould ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: [A/EGNER] My Egnor / Egner roots Author: magriff@davesworld.net (Allan Griffith) at internet Date: 09/15/1999 7:31 PM I'd be interested in comparing notes and hopefully adding to a mutual database of information on my ancestor Rachel EGNOR (I've always seen it spelled with an "O" instead of an "E"). Her lifespan is believed to be 1745-1805. She allegedly married Andrew MANN (may have originally been MAUNEY ?) in March 1760. Rachel is belived born in Wurtenburg, Germany and died @ Fulton Co, PA. I've not visited the area but allegedly her grave is at the Bethel Mennonite Cemetery in that Pennsylvania County. I cannot determine her parents and the limited information I have is gotten from others, thus I've never verified it. I believe I descend from their daughter, Margaret Sarah MANN, born November 1760/61 ? -- Thank you & sincerely, Allan Griffith, # 1 Jodi Lane, Bloomington, IL, USA 61701 home phone: 309-829-2063, if no answer try 309-828-2059 most reliable email: magriff@bigfoot.com alternates if above doesn't work: magriff@davesworld.net Personal HomePage: http://www.bigfoot.com/~magriff/ PEG HomePage: http://homepage.davesworld.net/~magriff ==== EGNER Mailing List ==== Visit the Egner/Agner resource page: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/e/g/EGNER/ Post your Queries, Bible Records, Bios, Deeds, Obits, Pensions, and Wills on the appropriate GenConnect Board: http://resources.rootsw eb.com/surnames/e/g/EGNER/#gc ============================== Support free genealogy on the Internet! 3. Allan and other new subscribers: Welcome! Allan, I wish I could help with your Rachel. She has been a big mystery for years! Most researchers have given up on ever finding her ancestors. I know of one other researcher (Rick Thomas) still trying and he's always on the look out for something to tie her into a line, but he's not a subscriber to the list. He's also looking for the Jacob Eigner who supposedly came to Philadelphia in 1753 that I found on my FTM's Passenger & Immigration index, thinking perhaps that's her father. She doesn't seem to fit Johan Mathias Egner or Johannes Aegender (later Agner, though my line became Egnor). She eventually settled just across from my Ludwig Aegender line, who settled in Washington Co, MD. Incidentally, my Ludwig married a Christina Mahn--so don't know if there is a connection there. May I add you to my Egnor/Agnor links page as a researcher of Rachel? I'm trying to keep a list of known researchers of the name (or a variant). My contact site is: http://members.xoom.com/rchartmann/egnor-contacts.html Hopefully other researchers will join the list and we can sort some of these lines out. Good luck! --Celia :o) ----- Original Message ----- From: Allan Griffith <magriff@davesworld.net> To: <EGNER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 1999 10:28 PM Subject: [A/EGNER] My Egnor / Egner roots > I'd be interested in comparing notes and hopefully adding to a mutual > database of information on my ancestor Rachel EGNOR (I've always seen it > spelled with an "O" instead of an "E").
