His father (my G G Grandfather) was also William Edmonston born about 1810 in Edinburgh and was a silversmith, he married Elizabeth Gerard in Edinburgh. I have little information about them..he died presumably shortly after their last child was born, so after 1840. They had 4 children, I suspect only 3 survived.... sometime between 1852 and 1861she moved to Islington with her grown up children and is on the 1861 census. Alexander Edmonston was my GGG Grandfather and was also a silversmith in Edinburgh I suspect that your Edmonstons were cousins of my Edmonstons...and the reason Im confused is that in those days the first born sons were named after their fathers, the Edmonstons were a large family at that time... so Ive just lost the thread.
