She descends: William Edmonston & Jemima ???? Samuel Edmonston & Lucy Bibb Zella Lee Edmonston & Lawrence Jerome Brown Recently deceased Brown & East My friend Here are some notes on Allen, probable brother to William: 1870, Clay, Dunklin, Missouri; p. 694B: Edmonston, Allen, 33, Ark Edmonston, Miriam, 26, Mo Edmonston, John, 17, Mo Edmonston, Allen, 13, Mo Edmonston, Malinda, 11, Mo Horner, Harrison, 22, Mo Horner, Amanda 18, Mo Amanda Horner's 1913 death certificate says her father was "unknown Edmonston". Miriam there, who is probably Allen's wife, isn't the mother of the kids unless she started having them at 9 years of age. They do match up pretty well with William and Jemimia in 1860, and Allen, b. 1857, will still be with his uncle in 1880. I'm going to assume the kids are Allen's nieces and nephews. The fact that a 33-year old husband with a 26-year old wife doesn't have a child born every 2 - 3 years after he married hints that: 1) One of them is infertile; or 2) They have had a string of children who died young; or 3) They haven't been married long; or 4) Something else. ---------- 1880, Clay, Dunklin, Missouri; p. 642C on the LDS (Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's BP, Mother's BP) Allen Edmonston, Self, W, W, 44, AR, Farmer, TN, TN Allen Edmonston, Nephew, M, W, 23, MO, Works On Farm, TN, MO Elizabeth Edmonston, Niece, M, W, 18, MO, Keeps House, MO, MO Samuel Edmonston, Nephew, S, W, 18, MO, At School, TN, TN John Arnold, Other, S, W, 24, AR, Works On Farm, AR, AR Timothy Lucas, Other, S, W, 22, MO, Works On Farm, TN, TN ---------- S W Edmonston posted this note, in a long list of misc. facts, with no source, on the GenForum Edmonson (Edmonson, no "T") query board in January 2010: Dunklin County , July 27, 1872. Allen Edmonston was appointed guardian of the following Edmonston children: John W., Clem, Samuel, Allen, Malinda. Security were A.B. Wilkins and H.C. Merritt. (The Wilkins family came from North Carolina to Tennessee for a short time and then to Missouri. Allen Edmonston might have followed the same route). ---------- Here are some notes on Clement, with some duplication from above. There are two Samuels in Clay Twp, Dunklin, Missouri on the 1880: Clay, Dunklin, Missouri; p. 642C on the LDS (Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's BP, Mother's BP) Allen Edmonston, Self, Widowed, W, 44, AR, Farmer, TN, TN Allen Edmonston, Nephew, M W, 23, MO, Works On Farm, TN, MO Elizabeth Edmonston, Niece, M, W, 18, MO, Keeps House, MO, MO Samuel Edmonston, Nephew, S W, 18, MO, At School, TN, TN John Arnold, Other, S W, 24, AR, Works On Farm, AR, AR Timothy Lucas, Other, S W, 22, MO, Works On Farm, TN, TN Clay, Dunklin, Missouri; p. 654C on the LDS (Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's BP, Mother's BP) Clement Edmonston, Self, S W, 25, MO, Farmer, TN, TN Samuel Edmonston, Brother, S W, 18, MO, At School, TN, TN James Arnold, Other, S W, 22, TN, Works On Farm, TN, TN Thomas Husky, Other, S W, 18, AR, Carrier Of Mail, AR, AR Mary A. Meredith, Cousin, W, 35, AR, Keeps House, TN, TN Wm. T. Meredith, Cousin, S W, 12, MO, Works On Farm, TN, TN --------- Given that there are just 4 Samuel Edmonstons b. 1857 - 1867 in the entire USA, and he is "at school" in each entry, I strongly suspect our Samuel was counted twice, once with his brother Clement, one with his uncle Allen. They are just a few pages away from each other. The two Samuels could be cousins born the same year ( /- 1) and named after the same grandfather, however. The Elizabeth and Allen Edmonston living with their uncle Allen on p. 642C might be Samuel's siblings, or they might be his cousins. Given the 1880, can we trace Samuel and Clement back? 1870, Clay, Dunklin, Missouri: (As of 09 Nov 2011, this census page was indexed as Douglas County, Missouri in Ancestry.com's census images. It says Dunklin in faint letters. The enumerator put a scrawl in the page number. Our Edmonstons are on the bottom of the left-hand side and the top of the right hand side of the double page numbered 695. The family was initially indexed as "Wiflaford"; it is either Willaford or Williford.) Willaford, Marcus, 32, Tenn, farmer Willaford, Eliza, 31, Ark, keeping house Willaford, John, 9, Mo, attending school Willaford, Safrona, 8, Mo, attending school Willaford, James, 6, Mo, attending school Willaford, Mary, 3, Mo Willaford, Sallie, 11/12, Mo ---- to top of right-hand side ---- Edmonston, Clement, 14, Mo Merida, Martha, 40, Tenn, farm hand Johnson, Zachary, 19, NC, farm hand Simmons, Henry, 16, Mo, farm hand Rovier, Henry, 35, Ind, farm hand Willaford, Maria 18, Mo, farm hand The most likely explanation is that Clement's parents have died and the children have been parceled out to relatives. The Willafords are in HH 11 on p. 695A. Samuel "Edmonds" is in HH 19 on p. 695B, with the Gibsons: Gibson, George, 23, Tenn Gibson, Sarah 18, Mo Gibson, James, 3/12, Mo Gibson, Rebecca, 14, Tenn Edmonds, Samuel, 8, Mo 1860, Clay Twp, Dunklin, Missouri: Edmonston, William, 34, Tenn Edmonston, Jemima, 28, Tenn Edmonston, Sarah J, 11, Tenn Edmonston, Manda, 8, Tenn Edmonston, John, 6, Tenn Edmonston, Clem, 4, Tenn Edmonston, Allin, 2, Tenn Edmonston, Malinda, 6/12, Tenn Merideth, Almedia, 17, Ark Atkinson, Charles, 32, Tenn Mr. Atkinson's occupation is "Farmer", so chances are he's a hired hand or a tennant. This looks like Clement as a child. His bother Allen, b. 1858, looks like the Allen who was with Samuel on p. 642C in 1880. There is a Merideth family member, too. Note this is NOT proof of Samuel's parents, but it might give enough clues that someone could prove or disprove my theory. I'd be happy to send you a GEDCOM when I finish, in 6 months or so. I just started this - November 5th. I haven't really looked into the siblings yet. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
