Question for anyone that wants to answer this. It probably is a stupid question, but please can someone answer. When a message or document references polls/poll tax, what are they paying taxes on? At what age where they required to pay poll tax? Thank you. Charolette Edmonson Sage

Charlotte: Someone can give you a better answer, but at least I can tell you that "poll" means "head", and so it is a tax on each individual. Until sometime in the 1960's a Poll Tax was charged to all registered voters in Virginia, and may have been in other states. It was only a dollar or two and had to be paid in order to vote in local and state elections. I recall one time being allowed to vote in the federal part of the election, but because I didn't have my poll tax receipt with me, I was denied the opportunity to vote in the state and local part of the election. The U.S. Supreme Court finally declared poll taxes unconstitutional. I suppose it got its' name from the polls where one went to vote, and was obviously done to keep poor people from voting.
