Howard Jones: the war ended April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House. Lincoln shot by J. Wilkes Booth on April 14, 5 days later. She got there and received the pardon in 5 days? Perhaps the dates are just a bit off. No offense... Tom
To Tom: I'm not thinking straight: Mrs. Edmondson obviously could not have got Lincoln to pardon her boy after Lincoln was dead. The incident apparently happened 1863-1864, exactly when I don't know. Anyway, here's the full account and the sources: Mamie Year, Reminiscences of Boys in Gray, (Dallas 1912). He enlisted in the CSA 8 Apr. 1861, Fayetteville, as a private, Co. G, 1st TN Inf., Archer's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Div., Jackson's Corps, Army of Northern VA. He was at Seven Days Battle at Richmond; Harper's Ferry; Sharpesburg; 2nd Manassas; Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville; and Gettysburg. Wounded at Gettysburg, he was taken prisoner and sent to Fort Delaware, from which he escaped and returned to his regiment. Furloughed home, he reports that the got into a fight with "home made" Yankees, killed four and was sentenced to hang by a military commission. His mother, appealing as high as President Lincoln, whom she visited, got him reprieved, the strain causing her death c. 1864. He returned to Fayetteville, was a Ku Kluxer for a while, then came to TX where he was a cowboy. Mrs. Felix G. Buchanan wrote up the story of his escape from Fort Delaware and the account of his mother's intervention with Lincoln. It was published in the Fayetteville Observer 10 Oct. 1907 and has been reprinted. Howard V. Jones TCozz57795@aol.COM wrote: > Howard Jones: the war ended April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House.
