Edmondson listers, This is FYI... Julia Florida/USA Dear Julia. The birth, death, & marriage records for most Orangeburg Dist. Quakers were included in Wateree (later named Fredericksburg) Monthly Meeting records, which were lost. Willard Heiss (a nationally known historian and genealogist) and I offered a substantial reward years ago to encourage people to look for the records in South Carolina. They were not found. Most of the surviving records for Bush River Monthly Meeting are housed at Guilford College in NC, and are available abstracted in Hinshaw's Ency. of Amer. Quaker Genealogy and a CD of that from Family Tree Maker. While it has been years since I worked actively with those records, I seem to remember that the Edmundsons were connected with North Carolina. I will try to check on this, but it may be a few days before I have a chance. B Medlin
We visited Guilford College in NC to research our Edmondsons. They were VERY uncooperative. The indecis we searched did not show any Edmondsons in their collection. We were told research was to be conducted only by one of their paid researchers. Perhaps the librarian had a bad day... Well, the same thing sort of happened to me when I sent for a file from the South Carolina Historical Society. I found a list of several (perhaps a dozen) files on the Edmondsons in South Carolina on the SCIway site which is by the SC Historical Society. So, I used their e-mail address and authorized them to spend up to $20 to send the the file I wanted. I was told to do this by the woman at the SCHS with whom I spoke on the phone about my request. I received a letter back, along with a copy of a page showing the Smith file in which the Edmondson resided. The note about the Edmondson file was on the bottom of the copied page. So, I wrote a letter to the SCHS requesting the file and sending a check for $15.00, the going price for 1/2 hours of "research." Saturday I received a "note" telling me that they "could not find the file." So, I am out $20! Should I feel fleeced???
