    3. Scott County is in southeast Missouri, south of Cape Girardeau. Sikeston is in it's southern tip. The only Richland I can find is in Pulaski County, about 20 miles southeast of Lake of the Ozarks. There could have been a Richland in Scott County in 1870. Scott County has a MOGenWeb site ( www.rootsweb.com/~moscott/moscott.htm) and a Historical and Genealogy Society (www.scottcountygenealogy.org/ ). You may be able to find something at these sites. 3. Good Morning Carol from South Carolina, I so enjoyed reading your story of your gg grandfather. My name is Susan Edmonson Hoyt and I can not find anything on my grandfather Edmonson. I have done some research but not a lot as I have a computer at home but am not connected to the internet. Thanks for an interesting story, it does make you wonder about all of our long lost relatives! Susan Edmonson Hoyt >>> [email protected] 08/22/03 12:46AM >>> Dear Robert- Here's my attempt at writing my Billy's story. Billy is my beloved gr-gr-grandfather and my "brick wall". I have a timeline with more details of my Edmisten line in a Word document if you want that. Also an obituary for Alex and a cute story about a surprise birthday party for Uncle Jim (also in Word). I would be happy to share them if you'd like. Thank you for all your efforts to revive the EFAB newsletter. It is much appreciated. Regards, Carol Edmisten (probably started as Edmundson) Billy's Story Once upon a time there was a young boy named Billy who was born in Ohio around 1812. Now Billy never learned to read or write so the spelling of his family name was a mystery to him. He knew that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Ireland, and years later in 1880 Billy gave this information to the census taker who visited him in Cass county Nebraska. It seems the story of Billy's life can be traced only through the snapshots given by the census takers every 10 years. As he grew up he moved from Ohio to Hancock county Indiana where he met the girl of his dreams, Mary Ann Gordon. He and Mary Ann were married in Shelby co. Indiana in 1833 and quickly started a family. In Indiana Billy's family was known as Edmundson. (This fact was shared with a census taker by one of Billy's sons in 1900 and noted on a Soundex card.) There is a reference to William and Thomas Edmondson as customers of Elijah Tyner's store in Blue River Township, Hancock county during this time (1830's). Mary and Billy continued to add to their family as they moved from Hancock county Indiana to Taylor county Iowa in 1850, and then on to Gentry/Worth county Missouri in 1860. By this time Mary and Billy had nine children: Andrew, Susan, Rachel, William Alexander, James Wesley, America, George Washington, Davidson, and Mary. By 1870 Mary and Billy were at home in Fremont county Iowa, with their three youngest children George, David, and Mary. By 1880 Billy and Mary had joined sons Alex and Jim at Union, Cass county, Nebraska. Alex and Jim were early pioneers in Cass county NE and farmed there for over 50 years. Interestingly, in 1865 when Jim married, he signed his marriage certificate clearly as Edmisten. Sadly in 1885 Billy died and was buried in Thurman Iowa in an unmarked grave. The fate of his faithful Mary is unknown. What is known is that they left behind many descendents in the midwest and west---all of whom spell their name Edmisten. While the written summary of Billy's life is contained in a dusty old ledger in the county courthouse in Sidney, Iowa, the true measure of his life defies written words. It is found in his many great-grandchildren who proudly bear his name. Little did he know that 110 years after his death one of his great-great-granddaughters (daughter of Virgil, grand-daughter of Ernest, great-grand-daughter of George Washington) would persistently pursue any and all clues to unravel the mystery of who Billy's parents were---a mystery lost in the mists of time. Do you perhaps hold a piece of the puzzle? the missing clue? Do you know of an Edmundson man in Pennsylvania in the late 1700's or early 1800's who married a woman from Ireland, moved to Ohio and had a little boy named Billy? ----- Original Message ----- From: ROBERT M. 3. Dear Robert, Just a note to say that I hope that not all the material in the new EFAB will in in story form. One of the major services this publication can do is to make raw data accessible -- copies of records, census figures, &c. That kind of thing would be difficult to put in story form. Many potential readers (like me) are not near a decent genealogical library or records depository, and the data displayed on the Web is often very disappointing. As for "family gossip", fine, but be sure it's labelled as "gossip." In my own case, very little of the fajmily gossip I've heard turned out to be factual. Keep going! 2. I am trying to locate any information someone might have on Mary Elizabeth Edmondson. The little I have on her is that she was born about 1881-83 in Paducah Ky. She married Joseph Nicolas Foright of same area. Sometime after 1902 and by 1920 they were living in the Wash. D.C. area. She survived her husband and was living at least until 1943 if not later. They had 3 known children Joseph, Charles, and Elizabeth. If any one knows who the ancestors of Mary Elizabeth Edmondson were please e-mail me direct or thru this forum. Many thanks in advance. 3. Chapter Three MY EDMONDSON FAMILY My paternal great grandfather, Henry F. EDMONDSON, was born in the state Of Vermont in 1839, plus or minus a year. As of this date (Jan 97) I don't know who his parents were or where he was raised. I know his date and place of birth because it is entered in his service record when he enlisted in the Civil War. He is listed in various papers as having been born in Vermont, New Jersey and Tennessee. I can't find any trace of him in any of those states. His wife, my paternal great grandmother, Nancy E. BALTIMORE, was born in Galena, (Stone county), Missouri on September 19, 1845. My second cousin, Thelma (EDMONDSON) GOODWIN, remembered that Grandmother EDMONDSON told of being the daughter of a Louisiana plantation owner and a French girl who came over with a boatload of women seeking husbands. Apparently Nancy did not like her Mother who (she said), thought of herself as being upper crust. According to Thelma the old lady also told of her parents' being s1ave owners. Perhaps they did not approve of Nancy marrying a union sympathizer, and perhaps this story is not true. (I have since found that version is not true, but Nancy's ancestors did indeed come from France) I assume my great grandparents knew each other in Galena. At any rate they were married in the Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma on January 19, 1862. One wonders why they went all the way to southern Oklahoma to marry and in the middle of the Civil War. Henry may have enlisted first, in the Confederate forces, then deserted or been discharged and later joined the Union, but this is only speculation. The Choctaw Nation, at the time they were married, was home to two Confederate regiments. (Since writing this version, I have found that Nancy's family, the Baltimores, moved to Scott County Arkansas when Nancy was about five and she must have met Henry Edmondson there.) Missouri during the first years of the war was aflame with Union and Confederate activity. Guerilla bands from both sides were active throughout the western part of the state, burning, looting and killing indiscriminately. There is family speculation that Henry was enrolled in the Confederate forces, then deserted and enlisted in the Union) I would dearly like to know the real story of their early lives. Recently I found proof that Henry enlisted first in the 35th Arkansas Infantry (Confederate) which later combined with the 11th Missouri. Some time after this he deserted. In March 1863, great-grandfather, Henry, enlisted in company E of the First Arkansas Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Nancy went with him or joined him later at Fort Smith Arkansas. During remainder of the Civil war he served with that regiment in various capacities from Private to Lieutenant and Drum Major of the Regiment when he was discharged at the end of the war. After the war they first went back to Galena, Missouri where Nancy had been born and later moved to Illinois and then to Otoe County Nebraska. They had four children, William, Elizabeth, Ida and my paternal grandfather, Henry Sandyman EDMONDSON. Theirs was a stormy relationship according to Cousin Thelma. They separated once or twice and finally Henry went to live in the National Soldiers Home at Leavenworth, Kansas where he died in 1901. MY Father once said that Grandmother had Indian features and that she could chop off a chicken's head with one blow even though, in her later years, she was almost blind with glaucoma. Eventually Nancy went to live with her daughter Elizabeth DEATON in Falls City, Nebraska. Nancy died on February 27, 1920. Henry Sandyman EDMONDSON, my grandfather, was born in Galena, Stone County Missouri on June 13, 1866. On September 9, 1889, he married my future grandmother, Lucy Adah MOORE who was only 16 at the time. Lucy Adah MOORE was the child of David F. MOORE and Sarah F. (KNIGHT) MOORE. I know little about them except that they lived in Nebraska and had moved there from Iowa or Missouri. I believe David Moore was employed by the railroad and was killed in a train accident. The story goes that David was forman on a construction gang. A thunderstorm came up and they took shelter unde. r a hand car. With the thunder they could not hear the approach of a train which ran over and killed them. A year later Henry Sandyman and Lucy Adah (My grandfather and grandmother), had a child who lived only two weeks. There is a child's gravestone in a cemetery at Talmage, Nebraska where they lived. My father George William EDMONDSON was born to them in 1892, at Talmage, (Otoe county), Nebraska. My grandfather, Henry Sandyman EDMONDSON, died at age 37 on December 4, 1904 at Talmage, Nebraska When Grandfather EDMONDSON died, my Dad, George W. EDMONDSON Sr was only thirteen. He had to quit school and support himself and his mother. At one time he owned and operated a drayage company and a hearse. ; I recall hearing him tell of trips with the horse drawn hearse to pick up the remains of those who had died during the winter. My father had an earthy sense of humor. I remember him saying that he had to ride outside on the hearse and that it was often so cold that when the horses would break wind it was like a warm breath of heaven floating past him. In 1911 Dad enlisted in company D. Fifth Infantry Regiment of the Nebraska National Guard at Auburn, Nebraska. His discharge, three Years later, lists him as a private, 20 Years old, with Brown hair, Blue eyes, 5 feet 6 inches in height. He later re enlisted and, in 1916 served on the Mexican border of New Mexico with the troops who were sent to protect the border from the Mexican bandit, Poncho VILLA. I don’t know the exact date, but soon after this the National Guard was again activated to serve with the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War One. He went to France in 1917 and returned and was discharged in 1919 as a First Sergeant. About that time he met my mother, Muriel Tempesta Degman. They were married 16 September 1920. As you can see I have not decided as yet, whether to make revisions as I learn or whether to wait and make the changes at the end of the chapter.
