Hi Nancy The Henry R. EDMONDSON you mentioned (should be Henry F. EDMONDSON) was my ggrandfather. My first evidence on him is his marriage to Nancy E. BALTIMORE in the Choctaw Nation on 19 January 1862. I don't know where in the Choctaw Nation they married, but Nancy's home at that time was in Scott County, Arkansas which bordered on the Choctaw Nation. Henry then enlisted or was drafted in the Confederate forces. He later deserted and enlisted in the First Arkansas Infantry (Union) My problem is to find out who were his parents and where did they live? Have been searching for long time. You have Henry as Henry R. EDMONDSON. Is the R a typo or did you get the information from source I am not familiar with? Thanks for any help you may furnish. George Edmondson. Since researching my EDM family, which settled in Benton Co., AR, after the Civil War, I have found that many of the early settlers of that area had ties with the Cherokees of upper GA. Like Chan's family origins, mine continue to be an enigma. My Richard Edmondson was b. 1805 in SC, m. Margaret & was in Union Co., GA by 1834 (WHITES AMONG THE CHEROKEES). There are only a couple of mentions of a Richard EDM in SC prior to 1834 and one was in the notice of buyers at the estate sale of a Joseph Underwood on Long Creek. Other buyers included members of the Quarles & Barron families. Elijah Barron & his Quarles wife were living but one hh from my EDMs in Union Co., which leads me to think that Margaret may have been a Barron or a Quarles. My gg-gf settled near Vaughn, AR & family members are buried in the Barron Cemetery located there. So, there seems to be a continued association. Vaughn has occasionally been spelled "Vann" and there seems to have been an association between the Vann's and the EDMs, as Chan pointed out. I bought a copy of MURRAY CO. HERITAGE on a quick trip to the Vann House in Spring Place, GA. An exhibit there has a tiny photo of James EDM, who owned the Vann house in the 1850's. His appearance is of a type similar to that of my EDM ancestors, so we could be related. James EDM was in Murray Co by the mid 1830's and there is a brief mention of his father, Thomas. At that time, upper GA was Cherokee land and James Vann was 1/2 Cherokee & 1/2 Scot. His father may have been an Indian trader. Indeed, there was an old Indian road leading from TN down through upper GA & SC. Trade goods would have been conveyed over this road through Spring Place. I heard briefly from one EDM researcher, who said that some of the EDMs of SC were Indian traders and associated with the Brock & Sinyard families. (I haven't been able to learn anything else about them.) If they were traders, this could explain the scarcity of information on our families. After the Trail of Tears, many of the upper GA families followed their Cherokee familiy, friends or neighbors into NW AR & OK. James of Spring Place had a brother, Samuel, who settled in Wash. Co, AR. In looking at SC records, there are few EDMs there before 1800. There were a John & John, Jr. EDM on a 1756 Greenville, SC Militia List. A John Edmundson & Ths. Gready were on the list of RW prisoners at Ft. Morris, which was surrendered by Mjr. Lane. They served in the 3rd SC Battalion. My g-gf & his brother went all the way to Cherokee Co, NC to enlist in the Confederate company of a Gready, so this is of interest to me. Rootsweb has a list of Nash's Regt. of SC Volunteers, who suffered great hardships in the Creek War phase of the War of 1812. Among them were Pvts. John & Saml. Edmondson, Pvts. John & Jos. Edmonson, & Pvt. Joseph Edmundson. Old Caleb Edmundson & some of his sons settled briefly in SC. Also, a Frederick Co., VA, Ths. Edmondson m. to an Ann "Nancy" followed his sons (maybe other relatives, too) into SC, where they all lived in proximity & appear on the early 1800 censes. Dr. Hugh Edmondson of OK wrote a book about his descent from this group. An Edmonston researcher claims this Ths., but I am inclined to think that he is desc'd from Ths/Essex. There is a James EDM living apart from this group, whom I am more inclined to believe was an Edmonston, since he is living near other Edmonston associated families. In a later GA census, my Richard states that his father was from VA. There are a couple of families descending from Ths/Essex in which the name, Richard, appears. One is Benjamin's line (Richard Coleman); one is from a Bryant (Richard of Franklin Co., VA, whose sons went to Ogle. Co., GA). This is pretty much all I know of the early SC EDMs. Nancy Edmondson Wood
