Nancy, Thanks for responding. I don't have a map handy, but seem to remember that it''s in the southerly part of the Ozarks. Its been about 20 years since I've been through that area and 30 or so since "Aunt Annie" visited from there. I just feel that if I could solve the mystery of WHO she is and HOW she relates....it would open some doors for me. So far, I have my Edmondson's in Alabama (coming from Tennessee) into Mississippi, and Louisiana. My grandfathers sister Jessie Edmondson and her husband wound up in Arkansas. (Cooper's) I might know more if I could ever find parents for my Philip P. Edmondson Sr. born 1801 in South Carolina according to the 1850 Alabama Census. Do you know who your Richard b. 1805 in SC parents are? Wonder if he could be a brother to my Philip P. b. 1801 SC? I have not been able to turn up many Edmondson's born that time period in SC. Thanks, Beverly
Beverly, Sorry, I can't claim any personal knowledge of these EDMs. If I remember correctly, Mt. Magazine is in the Ozark Mtns & between Fayetteville & Ft. Smith? I would imagine that these individuals would be from the early EDMs of Wash. Co.? My EDM came from Union Co, GA to West Plains, MO, after the Civil War. From there, they moved to Benton Co, AR. They were first at Vaughn, where I think they were related to the Barron family living there. No proof, however. Benton Co. is N of Wash. Co. & in the corner of the state. I have to say that I think we must be desc'd from the same EDM--anyone who'd name a son Hannibal just has to be a relation. My gg-gf was John Quincy Edmondson, the son of Richard EDM b. 1805 SC & Margaret (Barron?) b. 1805 NC/SC. His siblings were: Hamilton W. (Hampton), Napoleon B., George W., Richard, Lavina, & Margaret. See what I mean? Dear Tom and others Doncaster England or Doncaster on the Eastern Shore of Maryland? I am sure that there are other Doncasters also. In Eastern Maryland I believe Doncaster is on the banks of the Choptank River east of Easton. I am glad that you clarified that you were looking for a Doncaster surname, before this email went. I have no Doncasters in my database as a surname. Sorry. Were you awake when you sent the first email? You didn't mention anything about a surname. Nancy, You mentioned growing up in Arkansas..........does this sound familiar to you...or to anyone one with Edmondson and Arkansas connections? Have you heard of a lady refered to as "Aunt Annie" she lived to be almost 100.....probably died in the late 70's or early 80's she lived at the base of Magazine Mountain in Arkansas and used walk on the mountain for exercise. I was probably 13 in the early to mid 70's when she came to Louisiana to visit ...she came with Aunt Kate.....(Kate Edmondson Corbin) OR Aunt Jessie (Jessie Edmondson Cooper). Kate and her husband were from North Louisiana and Jessie and her husband lived in Arkansas. They were sisters of my grandfather David Porter Edmondson. She was somehow connected to the Edmondson side but I have no clue how...or what her last name was! Would love to satisfy my curiousity about this childhood memory! Beverly

Hello Peggy, Who was your gg-gf? I have a copy of a Civil War letter written from MO re the bushwhackers. They used some interesting tactics, including burning the feet of the men, to make them tell where their money was hidden. That letter stated that "The Feds killed old Ben Elzey" and that's how we knew for sure that the family legend was true. John Quincy Edmondson was my Civil War ancestor. He enlisted in a Capt. Graddy's NC Company from Clay Co, NC, but his father was living in Union Co, GA. Quince went to West Plains, MO after the war & then moved to NW AR. I was under the impression that bushwhackers have been around for a very long time. My gg grandfather was killed on May 1, 1863 in Missouri by bushwackers that was very much DURING the Civil War. He was a Wagoner in company C, first regiment of the Ark Cav. Vol. Peggy n a message dated 03/23/2000 5:57:57 PM Eastern Standard Time, howard.jones@uni.edu writes: << No offense at all Tom: bushwhackers, I believe, operated AFTER the war. Howard V. Jones >>
They also operated during the war. In NW AR--where I was born--every 4th house was burned during the war. When one army left, either the opposing army moved in or the bushwhackers descended. The Feds shot gg-grandpop, when he objected to making yet another contribution to their larder, leaving a widow & 6 hungry kids (he was in his late 60's). Sometimes, it was hard to tell the difference between them. Tobe sounds like a really interesting ancestor! Maybe he got a posthumous parden? Nancy E. To Tom: I'm not thinking straight: Mrs. Edmondson obviously could not have got Lincoln to pardon her boy after Lincoln was dead. The incident apparently happened 1863-1864, exactly when I don't know. Anyway, here's the full account and the sources: Mamie Year, Reminiscences of Boys in Gray, (Dallas 1912). He enlisted in the CSA 8 Apr. 1861, Fayetteville, as a private, Co. G, 1st TN Inf., Archer's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Div., Jackson's Corps, Army of Northern VA. He was at Seven Days Battle at Richmond; Harper's Ferry; Sharpesburg; 2nd Manassas; Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville; and Gettysburg. Wounded at Gettysburg, he was taken prisoner and sent to Fort Delaware, from which he escaped and returned to his regiment. Furloughed home, he reports that the got into a fight with "home made" Yankees, killed four and was sentenced to hang by a military commission. His mother, appealing as high as President Lincoln, whom she visited, got him reprieved, the strain causing her death c. 1864. He returned to Fayetteville, was a Ku Kluxer for a while, then came to TX where he was a cowboy. Mrs. Felix G. Buchanan wrote up the story of his escape from Fort Delaware and the account of his mother's intervention with Lincoln. It was published in the Fayetteville Observer 10 Oct. 1907 and has been reprinted. Howard V. Jones TCozz57795@aol.COM wrote: > Howard Jones: the war ended April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House. Howard Jones: the war ended April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House. Lincoln shot by J. Wilkes Booth on April 14, 5 days later. She got there and received the pardon in 5 days? Perhaps the dates are just a bit off. No offense... Tom

Dear All: If anyone is curious, Y.C. Edmondson is Young Colville Edmondson, nicknamed Tobe. He is descended from Thomas Edmondson, son of William Edmiston Sr. of Augusta and Washington Cos. VA. After the war, he was condemned to death for bushwhacking, but his mother went to Washington and got Lincoln to pardon him. I know his children, but no further, and I would welcome hearing from any descendants. Howard V. Jones TCozz57795@aol.COM wrote: > Bethel Cemetery > > Y. C. Edmondson Co. G., 1st Tenn.
