    1. [EDM] Samuel EDM
    2. My oldest EDM is Samuel Edmiston (b. about 1785 in either NC or VA, from conflicting census reports!), who married Jane GILSTON 1805 in Orange County, NC. They were members (1821-1843) of the Stony Creek Presbyterian Church (now in Alamance County, NC). They raised a family there until moving to northwest Missouri (Harrison County) in 1843. Joining the Stony Creek Church in NC with Samuel and Jane was a Sarah Edmiston. Is she Samuel's sister or mother? (A child named Sarah joined the church later.) From the naming patterns of their children, I wonder if Samuel's father is a John. The second possibility is a William. Or, I could be completely wrong about that. Samuel died in Harrison County, MO, in 1867. His descendants remained in Missouri, mostly moving southward to Vernon County, Missouri. I hope that one day I can find Samuel's parents and siblings. Also, I wonder what led them to move from NC to northeast Missouri in 1843. Thank you!! Charla Edmiston Manica

    2. Calvin Edmundson
    3. Hi List, My name is Calvin Austin Edmundson. My earliest known Edm is Hubbard Edmundson b.1811 d. 1886. He is my gggggrandfather. My Edmundson family comes out of Wayne County, NC. We have some family in South Carolina, Georgia, and still have some Edmundsons that own farms in Wayne County. Two of us (including myself and a 1st cousin) live in Southern California now. What I am most interested in learning: 1) Who is Hubbard's father? I believe, but have not proved, that Hubbard is the son of Elizabeth Edmundson of Wayne County. She was the only Edm listed in the 1820 census that had a children that would match the age of Hubbard at that time. I was able to rule out the others from establised family trees. She was listed as the Head of the Household. No father. 2) Is Hubbard the brother of Calvin Edmundson of the same period in Wayne County? Both were only about 1 year apart in birth. Calvin lived next door to Elizabeth (she was 65 at the time). I assume he was one of her sons. As I mentioned earlier, she had two sons of the same age bracket. No father listed. I believe Hubbard was the other son. One other clue: Hubbard named his youngest son Calvin(whom I'm named after), presumably in honor of his brother. And Calvin named one of his children Hubbard, in lue of the honor. Of course, it's not solid evidence, but it does make you think..... 3) If I can find Hubbards father, I am sure that I can take my family back much earlier. Most of the Edm families in Wayne County are well documented. Everyone knows of the much discussed and now infamous Lt. James Edm of Wayne. Most of the families in that area are descended from him. He had a ton of children. 4) Most important is that I want to keep it fun. I'm only 25, I have all of the time in the world. 3. My earliest ancestor is Richard Edmondson b. 1805 SC, m. Margaret (Barron?) & in Union Co, SC by 1834, living 1 hh from Elijah Barron. He may have been the Richard EDM at the estate sale of Joseph Underwood, advertised at the Long Crk. Mtg. House in SC in 1833. He had 1 son & 3 daus in 1834 & I believe that one dau d. young. Their ch: John Quincy Edmondson b. 5 Aug. 1828 Union Co., GA; Amanda, Esabella, f. EDM, Hamilton W.; Napoleon B.; George W.; Richard J.; Lavona; & Margarette Florence. The family was in the 1840 census of Cherokee Co, GA & the 1850 Union Co. census. They were in the 1860 Towns Co (formed from Union) census. John Quincy EDM m. Mary Ann Day on 11 Jan. 1849, Union Co, the same day as the m. of Manday EDM to Asal Day. J.Q. was a 21-yr. old farmer in the 1850 Census of 85th Dist., Union Co. He was in the Shooting Crk. Dist. of Cherokee Co in 1860. When the war broke out, Quince enlisted as a nurse, with his brothers, Hampton & Napoleon, in Capt. Grady's Co., 25th Regt. NC Volunteers, on 8 July 1861. After the war, they moved to West Plains, MO. Their ch: Laura A., Julia E., Richard DeCal, Walter G., Wm. T., & Lou W. Quince & Mary Ann moved to Benton Co., AR, near Vaughn, where they are presumed to be buried in the Barron Cemetery. They joined my g-gf, Richard DeCal (DeKalb?) b. 10 Oct. 1899 & m. to Eliza Jane Smith in West Plains, who had moved there after they m. They & my grandparents, C.E. & Mary EDM, are all buried in the Barron Cemetery, which I have visited on several occasions. I have Quince's war records & that of his brothers, but I know practically nothing about his siblings, except for research done by one of Margarette's desdendents. I would appreciate any information or leads as to the parents of Richard, Sr. & data re his children. Thanks, Nancy Edmondson Wood

    2. The earliest ancestor proved beyond a reasonable doubt is John EDMISTEN b. PA; md in Adams Co., OH to Mary "Polly" REED/REID Samuel Q. EDMONSON [name fluctuated w/ @10 spellings during his Civil War service and pension papers]...married Susan LUNBECK [dau of Joseph LUNBECK and Lydia REED; md Pike Co. OH 1821, lived in Mt. Vernon Furnace, Lawrence Co, OH] Edward Montgomery EDMONSON md Nancy PYLE in Bracken Co., KY Thomas EDMONSON md 2nd Helen Emelia RICHWINE My John EDMISTEN as far as can be determined is NOT the same John EDMISTEN who married Julia Ann McCOY; one was living in the 1850 census...and one was not; both had children born between 1830 and 1850 census. There were other males born to John and Samuel, but no known male offspring. Edward may have had other children, but if so by another wife [Nancy died when Granddad was about 3 or 4]. Now Granddad...did his part to replenish the name...[after first having a daughter] and had three sons, my dad, and two uncle both of whom are still living, so I 'll just do the numbers, not names here. DAD....had five boys...who between them had 8 males to carry on the EDMONSON; there are 3 young men in this next generation...and two of them have sons...so that's a total of 24 EDMONSONS in 5 generations. ....and then there were girls....HA! 3. Beverly, I have found out that there was a James, an Amos, and a William in Orangeburg at about the turn of the 19th century in Orangeburg, SC. As far as I can tell from the LDS Family Search site on the web, Lorelle Hendricks has researched the Orangeburg Edmondsons fairly thoroughly. She has about 82 submissions to the LDS site and perhaps many on this line? That date seems to fit with your Philip P. Edmondson's birth year of 1801.... Perhaps Lorelle can tell you for sure?? 3. Well, My first cousin told me that her mother, my aunt, told her that Grandma Guidy was the one who named all of her grandchildren. It seems to have been okay with them. Grandma Guidy was doted on and catered to by all of her children, so I've been told. I think that it was sort of an American tradition meant to mirror the royal tradition of the monarch's naming of the new children in the English royal family. You know...sort of proclaiming that we are all kings and queens in America! :) Holly Whitney wrote: > That would be nice but my child is grown. What I would most like to know???? Who Philip's parents were, and do they tie to the early Philip Parr Edmondson line? (We don't have a clue as to what the P. stands for in our Philip's name) Were the Philip Edmondson and Richard Edmondson in Bedford County, Tennessee on the 1830 and 1840 census(after MY Philip left Bedford County) related to MY Philip? My earliest known ancestor is Thomas Jerold Edmondson, Sr. He was born in SC in 1804. His family was originally from NC. After moving to SC, they moved to GA, AL, FL, LA, and possibly TN and TX. I know that I am related to Thomas and Elizabeth Edmondson of Morgan Co., GA through my Stanford line. The things I want to know are the following: 1. Am I related to Orvan? 2. Who were my ancestors back to and including my my immigrant ancestor? 3. Was my ancestor in England Christopher Edmondson? 4. Was my Thomas, Sr.'s father Amos or James of SC? If not, who? 5. Am I related to any other Edmondsons on this Mailing List? 6. If not my Edm did not come from England, then where? 7. Does anyone have prooof to the answers for any of the above questions? Instead of a full roll call how about everyone telling us 1) Who is your earliest known Edm*? and 2) What countries/states have your Edm* families lived in? 3) What are you most interested in learning? I was born an Edmondson. My brother had only girls, one uncle had no children and the other had three girls, so my Edmondson male line has died out. One of my cousins has a son, however, who is using the Edmondson name. My earliest known Edmondson is John (1635-1697) who immigrated to Talbot Co. MD. His 1st wife, Sarah Parker, was my ancestor. Until they got to Ohio, they were Quaker. In spite of being Quaker, Peter Edmondson is in the DAR's Patriot List. I am 10 generations removed from John Edmondson. and the generations between have lived in MD (Talbot and Dorchester Co), DE (Kent Co), OH (Hamilton, Montgomery, Darke and Clark) - and my father and his brothers were in IN, NJ and WA. What do I want to learn? Where in England/Ireland/Scotland did John come from and did any of his siblings come to America? Margaret

    3. Margaret, webtv isn't yet compatible with My Family.com & they constantly send "reminders" to you to "visit" your site which I personally found annoying. (Perhaps if I had a P.C. that would have been less annoying)At any rate rootsweb gives space for each list to have a page, yes? & rootsweb is compatible with all browsers,to my knowledge..I like rootsweb above yahoo, homestead,my family.com,webtv,ancestry.com. Photopoint gives free photo albums to be used easily with a rootsweb page so between these 2 fantastic places who needs those others???

    3. I had considered at one time having a web site to go along with this mailing list, but just never started it. The webmanager needs to do all the work with that and I'm not all that speedy with web pages. It was procrastination, mostly. However - MyFamily.com might just be the place to do this. See http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=home&htx=Activities&_lin=1 for some of what it does. Before I do that, though, I want to make sure somebody doesn't have something similar someplace else which we could use. Has anyone else used a MyFamily.com site? They do have banners and try to set cookies. They may send us email about new things they have. Looking around there at http://www.familyhistory.com/messages/messages.asp?category=surname&forum=Edmondson and following the links for starting a site it looked kind of interesting, and they let you upload pictures. I don't want to make this list less used or less useful, of course. However, it's all in the family now, I guess as RootsWeb.com is now part of MyFamily.com. I probably need to make some kind of disclaimer here ... I started the EDMONDSON list not long after RootsWeb was started, but since July 1999 have been an employee of RootsWeb, and thus now of MyFamily.com. Don't let that stop someone, though, from suggesting another option if you wish. Margaret
