    1. RE: [EDM] POLL TAX/POLLS
    2. Rick Edmondson
    3. Well folks, I suppose because I'm English I'll try to help. Here is what I know and understand about Poll Taxes The English Oxford Dictionary gives a number of definitions for "poll" , one of which is "the head of man or beast." It then goes on to give further connected definitions ("part of the head on which hair grows" and "the figure or representation of a head") So far so good It then goes on to give the definition "As the prominent or visible part in a crowd, a person or individual in a number or list (ie head) giving rise to phrases such as "by (the) poll", by counting of heads; "poll by poll", one by one; "per poll", for each person. This counting of heads then takes us to the counting of voters; the entering of votes, in order to their being counted: esp. at the election of parliamentary or other representatives. In England we go to vote at "The Polling Station" and the result of an election can be called the poll, meaning the numerical result of the voting. An "opinion poll" is a count taken to estimate public opinion on a specified issue by questioning a sample intended to be representative of the whole people The dictionary defines poll-tax as a tax levied on every person; a capitation or head-tax Hope that helps. By the way, Mrs Thatcher won the election in 1987 by promising to being in a tax that looked very much like a poll-tax but called it a "community charge". In the event there was so much dislike of the tax that it was the direct cause of her being removed from power so we no longer have a poll-tax ----- Rick Edmondson rick@hunter.co.uk tel: 01959 532575 fax: 01959 532832

    3. Dear All EFAB members over the years have researched Thomas Edmondson married to Anne Gregory. The following is the way I have pieced it together from articles in the EFAB with references. I would hope that there are new people out there who also can trace back to this family and add additional information and corrections. Don't use my collection as a proof. I frequently copy errors and make a few myself. Try looking up the references and see if there are sources listed. This family typically started out in Essex County, VA and some descendants are still probably there. From there the family has descendants in North Carolina, the eastern part, Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas. As far as the parents of Thomas, they are unknown. WE have only been able to prove a few families from England and Scotland, basically descendants of William Edmundson, the Quaker Preacher, and some that went to Canada from the SW Yorkshire area. The problem is that most of the EDM... families came so long ago, that there are no good records. It would be nice.... Some of the Canadian Edmondson and Edmiston families came in the 1820s, so it isn't too hard because some of the families still had the recorded history. 1. RE: [EDM] POLL TAX/POLLS
    2. Orv Edmonson
    3. Dear All England either still has a poll tax or was considering renewing it. If you find out the English definition, you will probably learn exactly what a poll tax was. When I was in England in 1991 they were talking about it. I believe it is a tax on every person as sort of a minimum fee that everyone was to pay. It may have been different here because obviously the slave owners didn't want to pay a tax on property, which the slaves were considered to be to justify their enslavement. I will copy some of our English Edmondsons to see what at least the English story is. Orvan Edmonson 22 March, Charlotte, In Georgia in early days ( and likely all the other states as well) the poll tax was the tax that adult whites paid to be able to vote in elections. The efforts at that early day was that the property owners were the ones voting, not the poor or the indigent people. It was a real tax on folks so that they were able to cast a vote! And , if one did not pay the poll tax, there was no vote. It was ruled unconstitutional as you can imagine. Anne R Bruce Question for anyone that wants to answer this. It probably is a stupid question, but please can someone answer. When a message or document references polls/poll tax, what are they paying taxes on? At what age where they required to pay poll tax? Thank you. Charolette Edmonson Sage

    3. Dear All I think this is the family that you are looking for. The Pollard Edmondson married to Mary Dickenson is accounted for and doesn't fit your family. I will show you both lines, but remember my data is just pieced together, but there are references to articles that have appeared in the early EFABs. I am looking for descendants of the Pollard and Mary Dickinson Edmondson family. Once again the Pollard Edmondson data is not proven. It is my belief that the Pollard family had a tendency for the daughters to carry the Pollard name over to the sons as a first name. John Edmondson, the father of Pollard Edmondson, was married to Margaret Pollard. You will also find the Pollard name used with other surnames occassionally. You can also see that with the exception of the son Pollard Edmondson, Jr., they all appeared to stay on the Eastern Shore and were very affluent. I also think that Dr. Thomas Edmondson married to Ann is from the Thomas Edmondson married to Ann Gregory line of Essex County, VA Edmondsons. 1. [EDM] Poll Tax
    2. Charlotte, in the early days there was a white poll meaning a white male over 16. Women were not counted as their status was different. In the South, Poll Tax in some states meant a fee to register to vote, sometimes required a literacy test, and women did not gain the vote nationwide until 1920, if memory serves. Hope this helps some. Tom

    3. Dear Edith Try looking up the Edmonstons in New York. They are in the local histories there in New York. It was frequent for the Edmonstons to drop the T and become Edmonsons. If I happen to run into this reference again I will try to remember that you are interested in it. What is your line back to John G Edmonson? Best Regards Orvan Edmonson Editor of the Edmondson Family Association Bulletin

    3. Hi Edith, I doubt that I can be of any help. But I am looking for my Edmondson ancestors in northern New York State before 1820. I believe, but my substantiation is very weak, that the Robert Edmonston who was enumerated in the 1790 census in Argyle Town, Washington County was my ancestor. In the 1800 census he (as Robert Emerston) was enumerated in the same place. In that (1800) census a Thomas Edmmerston was enumerated in the Town of Hebron, Washington County. In the 1810 census Robert Edminston was enumerated in Ticonderoga, Essex County and a William Edmoston was enumerated in Washington County. Assuming that the above Robert was my ancestor, I believe he and several other related persons surnamed EDMONSON and NEWTON migrated from Ticonderoga to York County, Ontario, Canada about 1817. One of these was a John Edmonson who died in Bradford, Simcoe Co., Ontario in 1857, age 69 years (born 1788). He left a will (under the name of John Edmunson) and a gravestone (as John Edmonson) and his wife left a gravestone (Mary Umphrey, wife of John Edminson.) She died 1854, age 55 years. I believe another of the persons who emigrated was Mary (Polly) Edmondson who married Abijah Newton about 1806 in Ticonderoga. Canadian census records indicate she was born about 1785 and give her birthplace as "the U.S." Another person was Jane Edmondson who married George Dean in Canada a little after 1919. Records give her birth year as about 1792 and her birth place as "the U.S." Your mention of the town of Argyle make me think we are probably researching related persons surnamed EDM---. I'd like to hear more from you. Larry Dean Vancouver, WA, USA

It may be a stupid question, but I would appreciate an answer. When a message or document references polls/poll tax, what are they paying taxes on? At what age were they required to pay poll tax? Thank you. charolette edmonson sage
