I'll look into offspring of Walter when I get home. On the 1881 Census He appears (age 26) with Kate (age 25) and two children Earnest (age 2) and Tom (age 1) I was unaware of other siblings however (except William now) Also note that his mother Charlotte (Nee Smith) was living next door as a widow. Does anyone have any clearer information on Kate, wife of Walter. He maiden name seems in doubt. She is variously recorded as White, Wood and West, individually or in various double barrelled forms. The same query for her parents too.(I'm sure you have worked this one out Fran) How come James was born in Sunderland. His father William must have moved there, probably for work, but it seems a long way from Donnington in Gloucestershire. Do we know his occupation? And Rose, yes I would be interested in the Coat of Arms, though I feel a bit dubious about it. All our ancestors seem to have been farm workers (e.g. Walter above is recorded as a general labourer). And I feel sure that such could not acquire a coat of arms. There is a Coat of Arms for the Irish Edgeworths of course, but we have no proof of a link. Thanks Rose and all who read this Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My guess is if yours are the "Irish" Edgeworths then they are all related to the original 2 Edward and Francis bout 1585 (roughly) sons of Roger or John Edgeworth (both Vicars) parentage not truly established.. The Edgeworth's in my family originate from Edgeworth in Gloucester. It is only assumption made in The Black Book of Edgeworthstown that the Edgeworth's came from Edgware and does not fit with the English meaning of Edgeworth. The earliest recorded Edgeworth Peter de Egewurth 1221 was to have hailed from Gloucester. Edward and Francis who went to Ireland in approx 1585, are said to be fathered by Roger (though some say it was his brother John) I tend to think of it as John, not because Roger was a zealous catholic as quoted, but because naming children followed a pattern in England, the first son of a son being named after the fathers father and in this case Francis named his firstborn John. This does not mean it was not Roger, as Catholics were not barred from marrying for a few decades after this. (It has not always been a Catholic ruling) remember Caesera Borgia the Pope. The mother (Rose) of John and Roger is buried in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire and they are meant also to have hailed from Holt in Denby but I expect that over 300 years people moved around. But I believe the origins are in Gloucester with Edgeworth being named after Peter de Egewurth 1221 (or possible later Stephen de Eggeworth) as de means of then I think its likely to be Edgeworth in Gloucester not Edgware. I believe a whole family of Irish Edgeworth were also transpoted to Australia at the beginning of the 1800's. Has no-one ever come across the Kildare Edgeworths? Its where mine come from. I have a John born around 1799 but dont know his parents. I think there is a Francis born in 1797 too.
Hi Ian Years ago I asked if we could be related and because of the spelling change you were insistant we were not. However we appear to be. My line stayed in the Cotswolds (Bibury where it all appear to have started) Off the top of my head I am also the Thomas line but my notes are packed away which is why I have not responded. I gave Rose some info back in November so she is better informed at the moment.
