SEWELL, A. Marie (nee Loudin) Age 89 of Hamilton passed away at Otterbein Retirement Community on Friday, December 19, 2008 at 10:10 AM. She was born in Lee County, Kentucky on September 29, 1919 the daughter of Chester and Isa (Coin) Loudin. Marie was employed as a book keeper for Hart Jewelry for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She was a long time member of Grace Methodist Church and volunteered at Meals on Wheels and Fort Hamilton Hospital for a number of years. She loved to read and enjoyed bowling and playing bridge. She married Shirley L. Sewell who preceded her in death in 1978. She is survived by one daughter, Thora (William) Patterson of Hamilton; one grandchild, Kirk (Denise); one great-grandchild, Nicholas; two sisters, Ruby (Willie) Truett and Jo Phillips; two brothers, Tom (Arlene) and Jack (Judy); three step-grandchildren, Jane (Tip), Judy (John), and Steve (Tari); five step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; special friend and neighbor, Thelma M! cDowell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bill; and one sister Virginia Barnard. LEGER, James L. "Big Jim" age 60 of Milford Township passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was born on October 9, 1948 in Happy Top, Kentucky, the son of William and the late Myrna (Thomas) Leger. Jim was a 1967 graduate of Fairfield High School. He worked several years at Pease Woodworking Company and then became an ironworker and member of Local #44, retiring in 2003. His favorite and passionate hobby over the years was to attend trap and skeet shoots. On March 22, 1968 in Hamilton, he married Vicki L. Hurst. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Leger; two loving children who adored their father, Christianne (Terry) Roberts of Fairfield and James Ray Leger of Milford Township; his father, William Leger of Hamilton; mother-in-law, Anna Mae Hurst of Hamilton; sister, Donna Dozier of Hamilton; brother, Bill (Beverly) Leger of Indian Springs; sister-in-law Diane Bowling of Hamilton; brother-in-law Buddy (Denise) Hurst of Trenton; seven! nieces and nephews, Anna Marie, Jeff, Lorie, John, Lisa, Dawn Marie, and Curt; his very loving canine companion, Josie Jo, who will miss Jim terribly; and many loving and special friends. Perlina Belle Arrington Slone went to be with the Lord on Dec. 16, 2008, in the Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson, Ky. Perlina was born in Blaine, Ky., on April 1, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Rebecca Susan Bowling Arrington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carman Slone (1986); two beloved sons, Donald Eugene Slone (1937) and Willard Dale Slone (2006); and two beloved daughters, Mary Elizabeth Slone (1957) and Esta Phyllis Griffith (2007). Perlina will be sadly missed by her surviving four sons and three daughters, Charlie Lloyd Slone of Columbus, Ohio, Ishmal Slone (Linda) of Blaine, Charlotte Sparks (Herman) of Grayson, Douglas Slone (Susie) of Grayson, Bert Slone (Anita Lynn) of Blaine, Sharon McNeil of Webbville, Ky., and June (Paul) Alexander of Grayson. Perlina leaves behind 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Low Gap Enterprise Baptist Church, and attended Pactolus Methodist Church since moving to Grayson. She was a member of Valleyview Homemakers, Hitchins Homemakers, and Lawrence County Homemakers and the American Legion Post in Willard, Ky., where she served as president and chaplain. She served many years on the Blaine P.T.A., was an EMT for Blaine Ambulance and Blaine Fire Department, served in the Democrat Womens Club and was a Kentucky colonel. BOGGS Betty H. Boggs, passed peacefully on December 11, 2008 at Mount Carmel Hospital surrounded by family. She was born on September 16, 1929 in Gilmer Co., WV, the daughter of Homer and Georgia Hardman of Glenville. She was a loving wife and mother and a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years Tom Boggs, her parents, four brothers, and two sisters, and one son Bruce Boggs of Hilliard, OH. She is survived by a sister, Mildred of Baltimore, MD; two daughters, Michelle (Keith) Price of Middleburg Heights, OH, and Gigi Boggs (Shah Hasan) of Hilliard, OH; a son, Tom (Mary) Boggs of Lexington, KY; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Betty was a graduate of Normantown High School and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV and studied at the Ohio State University. She taught three generations of third grade students at J.W. Reason Elementary School in Hilliard and retired from the Hilliard School System in 1! 984. She was an ardent advocate of childhood education and served in many roles in the Ohio Educational Association at local and state levels both before and after her retirement. Homer Drexel Short, age 83, of Louisa, Ky., died Dec. 16, 2008 in Louisa. Mr. Short was born Jan. 27, 1925, in Louisa, a son of the late Andrew Jackson Short and Lucy Elkins Short. Charlene Mae Alley Williams, of East Williams Drive, Summit, Ky., passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 15, 2008, from her residence, while surrounded by loved ones. Mrs. Williams was 71 years of age, born Dec. 11, 1937, in Catlettsburg, a daughter of the late Charlie and Virginia Boyd Alley. She was homemaker, enjoyed sewing, cooking and reading, and was a faithful member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the choir and the Rosettes. Surviving is Charlene’s only child, her loving daughter, Mrs. Terri Branham and her husband Bruce of Catlettsburg. Her family also includes three brothers, Jim Alley, Frank Alley and Bill Alley, all of Catlettsburg; three sisters, Janet Roark of South Point, Ohio, Lois Marushi of Catlettsburg and Dotty Spradlin of Emporia, Va.; five grand children, Jessica Branham, Casey Branham, Ashley Chaffin, Paula Williams and Brooke Williams; and two adorable great-grandchildren, Michael Grant Chaffin and Laura Grace Chaffin. Ernest Lee Watson, 86, of Ashland, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 15, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center. He was born May 12, 1922, in Jackson, Ky., son of the late Thomas Daniel Watson and Harriet Staley Watson. He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas D. Watson and three sisters, Evelyn Goodwin, Vivian Harrington and Dorthy Fout. He leaves behind a loving wife of 54 years, Janice Darlene Watson; and two sons, Ernest Lee Watson Jr. (Evelina) and Harold Franklin Watson; two grandchildren, Vashti Janice Anne Watson and Jared Franklin Watson; one great-grandchild, Abigail Rachell Watson; many special nephews and nieces; a special friend, Bonnie Bundy and his special caregivers, Pam Cagle and Kelli Thornsbury. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church. He retired as Master Sgt. E-7 U.S. Army after 22 years of service. He served with K-CO-328th Infantry, 26th Division during the Bulge in Europe and awarded the Purple Heart Dec. 23, 1944. He was a two-time recipient of the Bronze Star, three Combat Infantry Badges for service in combat during WWII, 8th Airborne Ranger Co. in Korea and as Ranger Advisor in Vietnam. He retired from Ashland Post Office as a letter carrier after 24 years of service. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Cribbs Hill Cemetery in Grayson by the Rev. Jim Nichols. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. BAKER, Janice A. age 76 of Fairfield, died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Parkside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Oxford, Ohio on July 5, 1932, the daughter of Paul and Emily (Korner) Wright. On August 14, 1952, in Crab Orchard, Kentucky, she married Robert L. Baker and he preceded her in death on January 3, 1994. Mrs. Baker had worked for Augspurger Hearing Aid Service, retiring in 1985. Survivors include her son, Douglas A. Baker, of Hamilton; and nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Robert, she was also preceded by a brother Floyd Wright. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday in the Zettler Funeral Home, 2646 Pleasant Ave., with Pastor David Hargrave of the Fairfield Church of Christ officiating. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00am Friday in the funeral home.
