I received this message from Joe Walker Peterson who has Peterson roots in East Texas. If you have any informaton on this Peterson family would you please contact me or Joe. Maybe someone, somewhere can help Joe. Mary B. From: Joe Walker Peterson joepete@juno.com I got into genealogy at a late date and it seems my east Texas Petersons and Walkers were not very commutative. I have all the decedents but cant get the grand parents born in the mid 1800s and most people who are on the net are looking for early 1800 or before. And I have to have a starting point, The 1870 census was lost at by fire according to the National Archives in Washington. I got into this too late but would appreciate any help. George W. He lived some where in the Henderson County area and his some of his children remained in that area. (And it is a big area and may have been bigger in the mid 1800s ) A nephew of Grandfathers, Durham Peterson from the Rusk CO Area( who had land with Oil on it) in the late 30s moved to the Clarksville area . He had a son J. W. Peterson my age. The son lost an eye while living in Red River Co.. Durham moved back to his old home area about 1940s. Durham had other children I do not know their names. Grandfather had two sisters I know of : Angie who married a Franklin and lived in Oklahoma and Ophleia who lived in Arizona. I remember My grandparents going back down there to visit. I have an 8X10 picture of them being there for a family reunion in what I believe to be the mid 30s. There are a large number of people in the photograph. I only know my grandparents and Aunt Angie. Angie Franklin lived in Kiomatia after her husband died. Prior to his death they had lived in Oklahoma. She had at least a son and a daughter but I dont know their names. I remember her saying either her daughter or sons wife posed for Chesterfield Cigarette adds (1930s). I also remember GF had a relative, maybe a sister, who was blind and lived by her self , kept chickens and a cow . She sold eggs and milked her cow and sold butter.(It seems to me she lived in Kilgore but those are 70 Year old memories.) All the while the oil wells on her property were pumping oil. She kept up her ways which were familiar to her and what she couldnt see did not bother her. There were either or Blacks and Blackburn names mentioned. I don't know if they were kin, friends or inter marriages. Grandfather had moved to Red River County by the mid 1890s and working as a Manager for the Wright plantation The depression of the 20 and 30s took it toll on all in the farming business. Later he operated a store and ranched. My great aunt Angie (and she told many a tale) told of an exslave, who was a giant of a man, being elected as sheriff of the county by the carpet beggar government, He came to the house and told her mother that he was afraid for his life and would surely be killed by the KKK. They fixed him up with food and horse and he headed northwest. I am sending this information on my family the only ones alive out of the ones I have listed are my self and my son and my great Aunt Ione. However I do have the names of all the children I only listed the Peterson line and it is getting thin. There is no violation of Privacy. Durham an his son are likely gone also. At least my brother was not able to find them 10 years ago, but then he wasnt in to genealogy. It is a long shot but you are closest I have been able to come to where they lived. And where some one into genealogy might see something which reminds them of stories they have heard in the past. I am on the Peterson discussion group, but they arent very active.
