Dear Friends, I just got this "Christian Heritage" petition on East-Texas-Roots. As sympathetic as many of us may be to this cause, ETR simply isn't the appropriate place. I'm writing this immediately to ask everyone to please DO NOT REPLY or DISCUSS this petition publicly on East-Texas-Roots. If you want to reply, please reply privately to jamajan@bristolbay.com. East-Texas-Roots is not moderated, so I did not, of course, see this message until it was sent to the entire list. It was, I am sure, meant well, but is not appropriate. However, it need not become a problem if we do not reply or respond to it publicly. There is NO NEED to express your opinion about it on the list, because the determination has ALREADY been made that it is inappropriate and as in the past, the real problems are only created when people send their opinions to the list itself. To determine that this petition is not appropriate for East-Texas-Roots is not in any way, shape or form a vote against the subject of the petition. It is simply a reiteration of the fact that *this* particular list is for East Texas Genealogy and subscribers have a right to expect that that is what it will be about. There are loads and loads and *loads* of email lists -- for example, on onelist.com and other places where this petition *would* be an appropriate topic of discussion. I have writen to the person who sent the petition and suggested several places to find lists that would welcome the petition.
