    3. To Mr. Anonymous: Speaking as a State Coordinator (MO) and cc of five counties, I can explain why I *think* more people don't contribute information to county websites; if I'm wrong, I welcome corrections. The information that the average genealogist has at hand falls into two types, neither of which are postable on county sites: Family specific information---we just don't do that, it takes up a lot of server space and is useful to only a small number of researchers Copyrighted information---books that are useful for county research, but are not old enough to be in the public domain. We simply can't post that information. Having said that, I will add that if you have got old town or county histories with biographical information, and they're old enough to be out of copyright, I think the majority of cc's would more than welcome this information to put online. The big "fashion" of these books seems to have been between about 1880-1915, and those are out of copyright. If you have one, there are three levels of helpful you can be: 1)Offer to Xerox the book if the cc pays for it, and send them the Xerox. (Some might take this, but it's not really very helpful.) 2)Offer to copy the most useful parts of the book at your expense and send it to them. (this is medium helpful.) 3)Offer to type the useful parts yourself and send them that, either in email, attachments, or snailed floppy.....or offer to copy/type the index and volunteer as a lookup resource. (both of these still require work on the part of the cc...putting in the html as necessary...but are not nearly so intensive of the cc's labor, and are REALLY helpful.) If the books that you have are copyrighted, (census transcriptions etc) you can still offer to be listed to do lookups. megan Van Zandt Co TXGenWeb coordinator -- piglet@usroots.com--stage manager Gilbert & Sullivan’s THE MIKADO SSC Opera Workshop/South Holland IL July 24, 25, 26
