Hello, everyone, I've received a forwarded letter from someone who, it appears, didn't understand how email lists work. I have written to both the person who forwarded the letter and the person who wrote the letter. In the meantime, several more messages have appeared on the list about this subject. I want to assure everyone that the Listowner is here, reads everything, and the situation has hopefully been taken care of. If there are any more messages that come to the list, it is due to the time lag that, as you know, often happens. So, just delete the messages about it, if they come. There shouldn't be any need to do anything further. If you do need to reach the listowner, I am nearly always available: please write to me *directly* at webpsalms@iname.com. An alternative email address is paphillips@inu.net. I have been enjoying most people's response to the question of where or what is East Texas. Let's not get too far astray or carried away, however, because I always feel an obligation to those who really only have time (and sometimes, ability to pay) for messages that are directly genealogical. As you all know, I am fairly relaxed about it, but I do once again, ask that you use common sense about what messages to send to the list (anything to do with genealogy and history of East Texas -- and I think the discussion of who/what is East Texas *is* fairly relevant) and send personal messages: please, thank you, please send me that, any personal stuff directly to the person(s) you want to receive it, NOT on the list. Please do not forward anything about viruses, missing children, in general, anything that isn't East Texas genealogy. The address East-Texas-Roots-L-request@rootsweb.com is an automated computer. You should only send Subscribe and Unsubscribe command there. If you have a message you want to send to the list, please send it to East-Texas-Roots-L@rootsweb.com (no -request in there). You must be a subscriber to post, and must post using the email you subscribed under. Please don't send unsubscribe requests to the list address. Send them to the -request address. Just put one word 'unsubscribe' -- no quotes in the BODY of the message. If you get a message saying you were not unsubscribed because you were not on the subscriber list, but you are getting the messages, it means that the email address you used to subscribe was different from the one you used to try to unsubscribe. That message comes from the automated computer, NOT from me! Think what address you used to subscribe and try again. If you still have trouble, write to me directly at webpsalms@iname.com and I will try to help. Remember to send messages to the list in plain ASCI text, not rich text or html. I know how easy it is to do it wrong, because I think an earlier message of mine may have gone that way -- I just realized it was set for rich-text/html. When you see a thread veering off the subject, and want to get back to genealogy, please do NOT write to the list and complain. You can write to me, but the best and most effective way to veer back to genealogy is simply to send a query or a piece of information about your family in East-Texas. This immediately gets people's attention back to the subject of the list without any chance of starting a flame war with on-list complaints. It really works! The Who/What is East Texas thread has reiterated my personal experience so well: that East Texas is a wonderful place and East Texans are wonderful people, helpful and friendly. One thing we need to remember, and even I forget, now that I live in East Texas -- some of our members live far, far away. Some have never even been here at all, while others have lived here all their lives. Those born and raised in East Texas -- jump in and help those who haven't been here with the geography, culture, history, etc. You'll be richly rewarded with the pleasure of having taken someone by the hand. Someday, I'll bet that person will turn around and do you an equally good turn. Hooray for East-Texas-Roots and East-Texas-Rooters! Every time I get discouraged and think about giving up this list, somebody does something truly wonderful for someone else or writes me a letter that makes my day! Thank you all. Sincerely, Pam Phillips Listowner: East-Texas-Roots Email: webpsalms@iname.com Email: paphillips@inu.net
Due to the overwhelming responses in my unsubscribing to please stay, I will be staying. I won't let one person run me off and I want to learn more about my roots and since my Durham/James settled in Texas I need to be here. Thank you all for caring. I do have a question and since I am not in Texas, I am not quite sure but which part of Texas is considered East Texas. Mine settled and lived in Collin Co, Denton Co, Dallas Co, Tyler Co and many many more. Thank you, Terri Durham-Stone "Happy Holidays"
Members, Does anyone have information on DR John Richard Dale of Diboll Texas? All I have is that he died at age 66 and is buried in Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Lufkin Texas. DR Dale delivered me when I was born in 1943 and I was named after him. I would like to know something about him. Richard Dale Carnley
I am sorry for tying up the list with the posting of the names in the 1915 Cook Book. I will not finish the list, for those who might think your ancestor could have contributed or was a member of that chuck I have full membership and will be glad to do a look up for you, please e-mail me with the request. Here goes again: My most elusive ancestor is William (Thom, Thomas) HOLLAND b. 1833 unknown birthplace, d. 1866 Tyler County, Texas. Married either a Susan (last name unknown) or a Mary BLACKWELL (according to my now dead great-uncle council). I believe that they may have moved from Georgia, but I am not sure. William had five children: 1. Mitchell Gilbert b. 1860 county unknown, TX d. 1939 Nacogdoches Co, TX 2. Council O. b. 1862 unknown TX, d. 1923 Nacogdoches Co, TX 3. Mary b. 1863 TX(It is said that Mary suffered some sort of ailment) place and death unknown 4. Benjamin N. b. 1864 TX place and death unknown 5. William Jr (born after father's death) 1867 TX place and death unknown All the children are listed on the 1870 Tyler County, TX census with Susan (maiden UNKNOWN) Holland who may or may not have been their mother. Their is also a Rufus (I assume he is a HOLLAND since their is no other surname) listed born 1869 TX. It is also said in my family that Susan remarried a JW DAVIS after William's death. Any connections? Michelle Holland
Good Morning, I, also, don't believe this listing is the place to sell videos, no matter who the person is, but I would also like to subscribe to a list where people show respect for each other. In the 1880- Bowie census my gg grandfather, Caswell Kite is listed with his second wife, Susan Kite and his last at home son, Caswell Leroy KITE. The first wife is buried in Erath Co. Barbee cemetery,Falls, TX. My problem is that somewhere after 1880 and 1897 this grandfather died and is buried and no one can find his grave, or his second wife, Susan. If anyone has any cemetery lists in Bowie county or Erath co. or any place inbetween. I would appreciate a look up for CASWELL KITE and SUSAN KITE. thanks, judy hugg grimes. Also, I am needing a death notice--or a grave-anything for a Louisa A.DODD known as LUCY DODD and she was last heard from in Bandera co in the 1880 census with her son Lewis Taylor DODD. He went to MILAM co and lived there until his death in 1908. We don't know what happened to MOMMA LUCY A.DODD. Any lookup on this woman would help. The family has tried all the regular sources all ready. thanks, judy

I am seeking information on my father's ancestry. They all lived in Shelby County at least around the turn of the century. Millard and Docia GRACE were my great grandparents. They had at least the following sons: Millard, Clinton Filmore, and Pete. Clinton was my grandfather. Docia was a STRAIN before she married. Clinton married Josie Mae FULSOM, d/o of William FULSOM and Addie WINDHAM. Addie was the daughter of Ben WINDHAM. This is all the information I have on my Dad's family and would appreciate any help anyone has to offer. The GRACEs settled the Waterman Community. THANKS SO MUCH!!! Terri, I, for one, am sad to see you leave the list. It is people like you who make it worthwhile for people like me. I am even more saddened that you would leave the list because of a "few" rather than stay because of the many. I know it doesn't seem so sometimes, but there are many many more kind and generous people here. Please reconsider a third time. You are much needed here on the list! Mr Leal, I agree Texas Gal was an improper placement on site, but the Baptist Cookbook list of names of people in area of East Texas is GENEALOGY. Thanks to this list and my response yesterday I have made contact with a "new" cousin. Thanks to him lots more family genealogy notes on lost family members.. Many times some of our female ancestors marry and move away and we are unable to find them.. that is why lists like these help. I live to far from Wood and Hopkins Co to research there. So any listing that can give me clues I really appreciate. I hope others and Val keep up the good work. Dear East-Texas-Rooters, Someone named Arthur Leal has taken offense at some of the recent messages on East-Texas-Roots and posted several rude, SHOUTING messages to the list. Arthur's messages posted on the list are at least as inappropriate as the messages he was complaining about. I know that some of you -- many of you -- agree with Arthur in thinking that there is far too much "chit-chat" going on on this list. To those of you who dislike the chit-chatting: the best and most positive thing you can do is counter it with positive messages that present the kind of direct genealogical content that you yourself are looking for. Please post your queries, post information about your families, respond positively to questions you see on the list that you know the answer for (e.g., queries about geographical places, or ways things were done back in East Texas years ago). For those of you who INSIST on sending genealogical poems, virus alerts, missing children reports and ANYTHING that is FORWARDED, please listen up! This is YOUR list, and I try as much as possible to keep from being heavy-handed, but there really *is* a lot of chit-chat going on. The chit-chat, the stuff that isn't really genealogy, needs to be sent to the *personal email addresses* of those people on the list who would have an interest in what you are saying. Once more, with feeling. You should NEVER send *anything* to more than two Rootsweb lists at a time. You should make an effort to get clearly in mind what is appropriate and what is not appropriate for the list. You should LEARN HOW to use your email program so that when you need to send messages to someone's personal email address, you know how to do it. Every single organization that you belong to in the real world has certain minimal operating rules and instructions and this list does, too. You need to be willing to do your part in just a few areas, and one of them is knowing when to send to the list and when to send to an individual or to a few people privately, using their personal email addresses. Playing by these few rules means being a good netizen, and shows consideration of your neighbor, which is a HUGE East-Texas trait. Some people do have to call long distance to get online and download email. Even if they pay a flat fee, very often people have a very, very short amount of time each day that they can spend on genealogy. When that is the case, people want to really hone in on things. They want the email they get to pertain to genealogy and history of East-Texas. They have a right to expect that nearly all of the messages will have *some* worthwhile genealogical content. A little while ago, when some people were enjoying threads that contained a lot of memories of the early days of this century, primarily, some people were unhappy, and I believe that a couple of lists were created specifically for those kinds of discussions. Let's do make use of those lists for things that are not really genealogy. I am not going to worry about an *occasional* genealogical poem or genealogy joke. We *do* need to lighten up. I am going to be very understanding and patient with those who are just learning, and those who accidentally send something to the list that was meant to go somewhere else. But please, people, use your common sense and good manners. If someone has sent a genealogical poem, don't send a dozen more. Wait a while and then if you must, send just one and do not ever send virus alerts, missing children, non-genealogical material and especially, do not send religious material to this list. I know that people are starting to send holiday greetings, and it seeems really unfriendly for a very friendly, helpful list not to send holiday greetings to each other. Perhaps a way to solve that would be to ask everyone to send some real honest-to-goodness genealogical information or query -- and then add holidays greetings to everyone at the bottom, if you so desire. That way, everyone knows you wish them a happy holiday, and those who are looking for genealogical content (as they have every right to do -- that is what this list is for) -- will receive what they are looking for. EVERYONE -- please DO NOT RESPOND ON LIST TO ARTHUR LEAL or to this topic. And, one more reminder -- when you do send your genealogical information, please DO put the SURNAME(S), place and time period if possible, in the subject header. NO ROLL CALLS in the subject header. What I would like for Christmas would be for everyone to write a really good query Given Names, Surnames, dates or range of dates, place (city, county or AT LEAST general area) putting at least the SURNAME and PLACE and/or TIME PERIOD in the Subject Header. What a joy if everyone participated and everyone cooperated so that people could see immediately by the subject header what to expect in the body of the message. What I would like for Christmas would be for people to use their common sense. If you are telling substantive information to another person, send it to the list. If you are just asking if that person's ancestor was ever in TN or something, send it privately. Then, if you have a match, and have information to exchange, let the list in on it. A good way to do that would be to write to the list and tell us that you and so and so have been exchanging information on, for example, the POWER family of Nacogdoches and Panola counties from about 1860 on, summarize the information, giving the primary people involved and their info, and offer to send further info to those interested. And those who are interested, *ask for it privately, OFF-LIST*. Ah joy! I do not believe that Arhtur Leal has been a subscriber long enough to know what a basically great group of friendly, helpful, caring people you are, in addition to there being very many experienced researchers who are able to help with all kinds of problems and questions, in addition to the newcomers and those struggling to learn the Internet. All of you -- newcomers, oldtimers, experienced researchers, those just doing family history for the first time -- you all have my support and appreciation!! Thanks very much in advance for your cooperation. Sincerely, Pam Phillips Listowner East-Texas-Roots Email: webpsalms@iname.com
One man's junk is another man's treasure. I know that some genealogists are looking for names, dates, just the facts mam please kind of thing. We all need those. I also look for anecdotal information. It seems like it gives my ancestors a personality and makes them more three dimensional. If I found my grandmother's name in that old cookbook; I would be just thrilled. It would tell me that she was #1 a baptist,#2 a cook,#3 one of her favorite foods. #4 that she had lived in or around the area where the book was produced. I can not imagine why anyone would find this objectionable material. The subject of the posts are clearly marked so that they can be easily deleted if someone does not want to read them. All my ancestors and I are from east Texas. I am not related to everyone there; just a goodly portion of them. I sort of like hearing about one of them making the big time music scene. I am a grandma too and if one of mine were to do something like that I'd want to let everybody know so that they could celebrate with me. I would object too if we had a bunch of people advertising stuff on the list. They don't do that. Just on occasion when one of us or one of ours has a book, record,or maybe is selected as an astronaut etc. I am one that will say, hey that girl is from east Texas. She makes us all proud. I think that people who have not grown any roots in the area themselves must not be able to understand that. Karen Kerr
all those who are tired of recieving the non-related genealogy material please go to http://www.rootsweb.com and post your complaint about this list and the moderator.
