I just kept seeing all these other counties that I wouldn't have thought were East Texas. Response to Jo: This is what I think, right or wrong: I have always consider East Texas as the location of what is actually only North East Texas. I never would think that Houston was East Texas! > So, I guess the answer to the question of "where is East Texas" depends on > where you think it is, all counties are covered, whether it be "north east, > east, or southeast Texas or somewhere in the middle of the North east and > Southeast.:) > Jo Autrey > jmautrey@email.msn.com > Response to Jo: Cute, 'where you think it is' The telephone Area Code is the same for Texarkana, in far northeast TX as in Panola county and in Denison/Sherman TX. Each being at least 150 miles from Texarkana < my home town >. I guess that would be one way to look at it. Thank to every one who answered my posting. I had one that said, "East Texas is every county that has a pine tree growing in it that God put there, from Oklahoma to the Gulf of Mexico, to the Louisiana State line." Sharon
This map is great for dividing Texas into county areas for purposes of the lists. And if you know which area you are looking for, it may work great. I grew up in what is considered North Central Texas (a line down from the panhandle area of Texas where it meets the Red River back to Dallas.) However, this map has the county where I grew up (my family has owned land here since 1878) listed as being part of the Panhandle area of Texas. Not so! Most Texans (born, raised, and still living here) consider anything from a line through Dallas, and east to be EAST TEXAS. Anything west of Dallas, is considered to be WEST TEXAS. Fort Worth, Tx. is supposed to be where the West began in Texas. These areas were then divided into areas of North, South, and Central in either East, Central, or West. The EAST TEXAS mailing list has been and, I am sure, will continue to be a great list about answering any and all questions about Texas which are sent to them. The WONDERFUL people on this list don't seem to care one way or the other whether your county is considered east Texas or not. Hoo-ray for them! If you have a specific question about a county, just ask. Someone will answer about where, according to a TEXAN, this county is located. Texas is so B-I-G that it is not looked at the same as many other states. Each person who was born and raised here has an opinion about where they were born and raised. This map is great, thanks for giving the information to us. However, it really doesn't answer answer the question as to what counties are considered to be part of "East Texas", the counties included in the coverage of the East-Texas-Roots list. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/map/txregion.htm The top section on the Texas Map is divided into sections: the top east section is called Counties in the north eastern region of Texas and the following counties are included in it. Counties in the north eastern region of Texas 33 Anderson County 5 Bowie County 19 Camp County 13 Cass County 34 Cherokee County 6 Collin County 14 Dallas County 8 Delta County 25 Ellis County 2 Fannin County 10 Franklin County 32 Freestone County 1 Grayson County 23 Gregg County 22 Harrison County 27 Henderson County 9 Hopkins County 38 Houston County 7 Hunt County 15 Kaufman County 3 Lamar County 37 Leon County 31 Limestone County 39 Madison County 21 Marion County 12 Morris County 35 Nacagdoches County (shouldn't this be spelled "Nacogdoches"? 26 Navarro County 30 Panola County 17 Rains County 4 Red River County 24 Rockwall County 29 Rusk County 36 Shelby County 28 Smith County 11 Titus County 20 Upshur County 16 Van Zandt County 18 Wood County To click on the section below the above region, we find: Counties in the Southeastern Region of Texas and includes these counties: 8 Angelina County 21 Austin County 1 Bastrop County 32 Brazoria County 4 Brazos County 3 Burleson County 30 Calhoun County 34 Chambers County 20 Colorado County 11 Fayette County 26 Fort Bend County 33 Galveston County 5 Grimes County 29 Hardin County 27 Harris County 24 Jackson County 17 Jasper County 35 Jefferson County 19 Lavaca County 2 Lee County 28 Liberty County 31 Matagorda County 13 Montgomery County 18 Newton County 36 Orange County 15 Polk County 10 Sabine County 9 San Augustine County 14 San Jacinto County 7 Trinity County 16 Tyler County 23 Victoria County 6 Walker County 22 Waller County 12 Washington County 25 Wharton County However, some people consider "East Texas " an area of it's own, the boundary is undefined by most, but most likely a combined area to create from the Red River south to the Gulf. Some purists consider East Texas to be somewhere below Bowie County but before you get to the coast and doesn't start until you get well past Dallas to the east... I was more than surprised to discover Dallas, according to this map, is included in the "north east" region of Texas when by all other counts we are in the North Central region. So, I guess the answer to the question of "where is East Texas" depends on where you think it is, all counties are covered, whether it be "north east, east, or southeast Texas or somewhere in the middle of the North east and Southeast.:) I'm just glad to have a list available to cover such a varied area for all researchers.. There is clickable area on the TX GenWeb site that has the Project County Map Based Index. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/map/txregion.htm you can select the region and click and it will give you the names of the counties and then can go to the individual sites. If you are not in West Texas--then you must be in East Texas!! As far as I know there is no central Texas list. All of the individual counties have a list, but it sure is easier to be on the East Texas list, than 20 different lists where your relatives may have roamed. There is a Hill Country list that could be considered kind of central. It is mostly composed of the German settlements. What counties are you researching? Karen Kerr
Would you please post the names of the counties considered to be in East Texas? or a description of the boundries, like from Titus county on the west to Bowie on the east, to Panola on the south. Something like that. Thanks, Sharon Church
Dear Friends sorry I guess my message was scrambled .Will resend ! Dear Evelyn, Well, thisis exciting!; We are cousins! MargaretAnn Amason's (b. 1839-1842 in AL, d. c. 1863 in Nacogdoches Co. TX)father was Matthew Amason (b. c. 1814 in GA, d. c. 1869 in TX, probably Nacogdoches Co.). Margaret's mother was named Louisa (maiden nameunknown). You willfind the family of George &;Amasson&, Margaret's brother, in the1870 census of Nacogdoches Co. TX.&; His wife was Emer Arnold.; In the household is Eliza &;Amosson;, age 59, b. GA.&; I believe Eliza is none other than Louisa Amason, widow of Matthew.&; Rebecca Amosson, the youngest sister, was also in George's HH in 1870.; In 1880, L. Amorson was head of household with R. Amorson, daughter, and ; grandchild L. Amorson, age 4.&; George and Emer must have died before 1880?? ;Somerecord I have, from Nacogdoches Co. TX shows Matthew; Amason present in 1868, but I didn't enter the source in my database....and of course, he is missing in 1870, so I presumed a death date of 1869, but I would behappier if I had entered the source in my database!! Anyway,Matthew was in Nacogdoches County, TX by 1862, two months after he mustered out of a Louisiana C.S.A. unit. Obviously Margaret was in Nacogdoches Co. TX sooner than 1862, since she must have married John Claiborne Norris before 1859, since their first son, John was born by then. That makes me believe that Matthew was in Texas before 1860. Unfortunately,Matthew's family, his brother, Rufus' family and their mother, Elizabeth are missing from 1860 censuses. I have found their brother, Elisha in Monroe Co. AL in 1860 and their sister's family is in Monroe Co. AL in 1860, as well, but Nancy had died by then.; Matthew and Elisha had died by 1870. My 2nd ggrandfather, Rufus, probably also died by then (Rufus is missing in 1870 as well, but his son, my ggrandfather was in Shelby Co. TX in 1870) and Jesse died in 1870.; Three widows can be found in Shelby Co. in 1880: Sarah A. Amason, widow of Jesse, Ara AnnAmason, widow of Elisha and Mary Ann Amason, widow of Rufus. I have allof Matthew's children, but I don't know what happened to all of them,yet...I'm always looking!! These are probable children of Matthew Amason and Louisa (Matthew was awfully young for the earlier children to be his...and I have this theory that they may have been children of his older brother, Washington, whom I've never found in census records...so perhaps Matthew married his brother'swidow??). Some ofthe information below is tentative. ; I know that Matthew had a male child in his household in 1850 named James and that a James W. Amason married Susan Browder (a widow) in Montgomery Co. AL in 1864. Since I don't know of any other James Amason in any Amason HH in Montgomery Co. AL, except Matthew's HH, I have assumed that James W. Amason was same person as James, son of Matthew. Susan E.Amason married Joseph Andres Flores and their family is well documented in census info and in local histories of Nacogdoches Co. TX. Again check out the Amason website....our families are detailed under Descendants of Uriah Amason of Montgomery Co. AL. It isn'tevery day that I find descendants of our particular Amason family, because they are so difficult to follow!! I also found this in todays Corsicana Paper: Documents from 'War between the States' on display Friday By BETH GANSMANN/DAILY SUN STAFF Corsicana-area residents can view history on Friday evening at the Cook Center at Navarro College. The Pearce Collection is a collection of 2,200 Civil War letters, signatures, dairies, photographs and other papers related to the war. Navarro College will display the collection in conjunction with a reenactment of the Battle of Hodge Oaks Plantation. Dean of Learning Resources Dr. Darrell Beauchamp said the collection contains documents from well-known Civil War participants, as well as unknown, common soldiers. "We have a wide assortment of documents, including some signed by the greats of the war like Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant," Beauchamp said. "We also have a collection of 152 letters a soldier named L.D. Bradley wrote to his wife in Fairfield which tell of the conditions the common soldier faced." According to Beauchamp, one of the highlights of the collection includes carte-de-visite or visiting cards. These cards were left at residences when people visited one another and carried a photo of the owner. "We have these cards for Robert E. Lee, A.P. Hill and a variety of others," he said. "Some of the photos on the cards were taken by famous Civil War photographer Matthew Brady." Beauchamp said he hopes area residents will take advantage of this opportunity to view original Civil War documents. "Because of the size of the collection, we can only drag out the collection once in a while, but now we can take out the collection and let people view the original documents with supervision," Beauchamp said. "I will be there to supervise people, answer questions and mediate discussions about the collection." Charles S. and Peggy Pearce, Jr. began the collection in 1991 and they donated it to the college in 1995. The display hours on Friday are 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. "It's a nice sized collection, one of the largest outside the deep South," Beauchamp said. "You don't expect to find a collection of Civil War collection in Corsicana, Texas." Hello, I just read this online and thought some of you might be interested. I have nothing to do with the program, but if I lived closer I would love to go to it. Pioneer Village showcasing live re-enactment of 1860s family life By GARY CONNOR/DAILY SUN STAFF History will come alive Saturday at Pioneer Village in Corsicana. A very special event, "Life on the Home Front" will showcase everyday activities of pioneer families from the early to mid 1860s during the War Between the States. "Life on the Home Front" is a part of the annual event Navarro County War Between the States Weekend held the second weekend of January. At Pioneer Village from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. local and area persons will participate in spinning, weaving, quilting, soap making, dulcimer music, and blacksmithing. Billy Minatra from Richland will perform a living history presentation assuming the role of deceased Chatfield Civil War blacksmith B. F. Lisman. Minatra has recreated the role of Civil War era blacksmith for movies including "The Postman" which starred Kevin Costner and will appear in the Mel Gibson movie, "The Patriot", secheduled for release in July, according to Bobbie Young, director and curator of Pioneer Village. Minatra will set up and operate a blacksmith forge and perform blacksmith work during the all day living history presentation. Civil War blacksmith B.F. Lisman from his blacksmith forge in Chatfield made swords for the Confederacy. A Confederate sword made for Francis Marion Martin, a state senator and post-civil war Lt. Governor of Texas, by Lisman will be on display this weekend with the Pearce Collection at Navarro College where the sword is currently on loan. Visitors will be able to see Minatra perform as the Chatfield blacksmith on the "living history" stage at Pioneer Village, view one of Lisman's Civil War swords, and stand near the site of his blacksmith shop in Chatfield at the site of the reenactment of the Battle of Hodge Oaks Plantation all during the exciting weekend. Also at Pioneer Village at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. period dulcimer music will be presented by musicians from Fort Worth. The Piece Maker's Guild will present quilt making demonstrations and the soap making demonstration will be performed by historians from Ennis. Pioneer Village is also one of the stops on a bus tour of historic Civil War sites in Corsicana. The tour is free and begins at 10 a.m. Saturday near the Confederate hero statue on the Navarro County Courthouse lawn. For more information on Pioneer Village activities contact Bobbie Young. My gg-grandmother was Nancy Jane (Clark) Williams born 1838 AL, married Joel E. Cheatham in Angelina County, Texas, 12 October 1857. He died about 1875 In Angelina County and she then married Green Berry Loftin 18 December 1887. She died or left Angelina County about 1898 since she dropped from the tax rolls at that time. Her grave has not been identified but is believed to be in the Kelty's Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas. She and Joel had 9 children. Nancy Jane Clark's parents were killed along with her paternal grandfather when robbers raided their farm. She, 2 siblings and her paternal grandmother survived, being hidden out. Would like to know more of her family and this story prior to her coming to Angelina County, Texas. It is told by family members that she was 1/2 Cherokee or Creek and her father was red-headed. Franklin and they were living in Simpson Co., Mississippi in 1840. In 1850 they were in Texas(first in Tyler county, I believe) and settled finally in Grimes County where they are now buried. I have reason to suspect that possibly Silas Chapman and Elizabeth Rainwater could be her parents. Does anyone have any information on the Chapmans? I'm interested in other Chapmans also since my husband descends from John Chapman and Fannie Franklin. I have discovered conflict in the parents of John Chapman. One family has John Chapman and ____Hanna or West as the mother. Another family has a Joseph Chapman as his father. So far I have not been able to verify which Chapman is the father of John Chapman. Also, does anyone have any knowledge of Indian heritage with the Chapmans. Thanks for any information you may be able to give me. Other surnames: Brazos County, Utsey, Lawless, Gilpin, Dansby, etc! Grimes and Madison: Taylor, McClendon, Smoot,Colson, etc. Thanks, Pat (Taylor)Campbell MercyC@aol.com
