JAMES SPENCER was born 1805 in NC, moved to McNairy Co. TN in 1837 and then to Titus Co. TX in 1847. His eldest son James William Spencer was born December 15, 1834 in McNairy Co. TN, and died January 05, 1918 in Titus Co. Texas. He married MARTHA ELLENDER BYNUM. Unless, there was some children that died at a young age, their first child was not born until 1876, when he was 43 years old. Maybe this family are cousins of yours. I have all of the children's names and birth year of both the eldest and youngest James Spencer families if you need it. sharon church
To reach her directly regarding Spencer &/or Spence genealogy, simply subscribe to the rootsweb mail list of SPENCE-L. It's not real busy right now. I have also found a number of Spencer burials in the cemeteries at the Smith County website. Or you could go read what's posted in the Spence-L archives. I go there for reference. LindaJ

Dear Texas List, Got a couple of e-mails about East and North Texas. They are fun, but could you do it this way: I got to see these Pineie-Woods, maybe this summer, and can you tell me where by miles south of Okla. and miles east of Louisiana, or is this against Texas rules of mesurement and weights.<G> Is there anyone into Ferry research along red river, as far west as Cooke County? The way I understand it the county would sell you a permit to operate a ferry and take a percent. I looked for the Ferry Bond Book in Cooke County and it was gone, it would of listed operators. I guess it would of been same for Grayson, Fannin, and the County Paris is in. My Grand Father Walter E. Coffman, b.1867-1946 was a Texan, Born where, I'm not sure except his father put down Tex. in 1870 Census of Fannin,Co. Walter father, A.D. Coffman,b.1824 Tenn. Died by family records 11/3/1873 in Cooke,Co. A.D. was also called Dedrick and sometimes last name Kauffman. The reason I'm asking is my Grandfather almost had to grow up on his own after age 6 along the Red River, his father and mother both dead. He may of had a step mom. part of the time in Bonham, by name of Laura F. Brown, A.D. married her in 1871 in Fannin. Walters stories were filled tails of working on the Red River Ferry. (he was showed in 1880 Census of Cooke living in a boarding house) He told of taking outlaws, as passengers, across the river just before the sheriff got there, The Indian's, Gun Fights. I guess the people of the Red river raised him. He worked on ferry until he was 22 and then left the area. That would of been in abt.1889. He then traveled all of Texas as a traveling Potographer taking pictures of people and even some for the railroad in far west Texas to promote the sale of land to the people of the East. Displayed his work in 1903 at Worlds Fair in St. Louis, and won 3rd. place. A real Texan this grandfather of mine, and my father was also. Dad was a real cowboy and rode the range in western Texas where the counties are as big as some states. Walter had poto Studios all over Texas at different times and places. He spoke of Denton, Tx. as one. If anyone ever heard of this Texan Along the Red River, Please let us know the tail. Respectfully Sumited, Carl Coffman,B.1933 From Way North Texas near Kansas. Hello, This is to let the List know I am now receiving my e-mail. My ISP problem has been resolved. Wanda wrtracy@juno.com
Billie, Was that a site on web about Cason Monk Funeral Home records as I am from Nacogdoches County and my family used Cason Monk. In fact, my brother worked for Cason Monk Furniture when he was very young and he would leave his job and go play for funeral at the funeral home when the family had no one to do it. Betty
From..Sammy Lee I can't begin to tell all of you how much I have enjoyed the comments about the East Texas county issue. I wrote Sharon Church (the one who started this mess) a little note the other day and I think she is enjoying it too. Note: Yes Sammy, I am thoroughly enjoying the responses received on the East Texas issue. It is off subject and I am sorry about that, however it's been fun. from...Karen Kerr snip: There are foods in East Texas that can hardly be found anywhere else. Cream peas and lady peas, elephant heart plums, cershaw squash, salmon croquettes with maple syrup, the worlds best figs, yellow meat watermelons, mayhaw berries, and water so soft that you hardly even need any soap. Last, but not least, the people are as friendly as any in the world. A lot of what I love about North East Texas is disappearing as it becomes more metropolitan. It is comforting each time I visit and find that much of it still exists. Note: Karen this is a very sweet response. I have never know anyone else who knew about salmon croquettes with syrup. I always get laughed at when I eat them like that. However, we were poor folk so we had mackerel instead of salmon. From..LGut800427@aol.com snip: My grandpa's knee was my haven of safety as the big ole moon rose over the state line and he always said that it had just come from Paris. I heard of the pines in the far east, and the scissor tailed birds in Ok, Note: Your response painted such a pretty picture! I am homesick now. From...Sallie Cannon There just has to be a North-East and a South-East Texas. Reason I know this is, I live near Beaumont, TX, and I have to travel North, to get to East-Texas. Note: Makes sense to me. I live near Ft. Worth and I travel north to Texarkana. I have been here almost 16 years now, and still call East Texas my home. from...Rebecca everyone waves at everyone,or nods their head, or speaks as you pass them by where he lives now. "Down here", unless you actually know the person, your lucky to even see their eyes. Note: Crime is so prevalent, that people don't dare look at other people when they are walking on the streets, in fear of someone taking it as an invitation. At least, that is why I don't. Call me paranoid. ------------------ Well, folks, I have enjoyed this interchange about East Texas. Let's get back to genealogy, before we get taken off the list!! Sharon Church
To add to the discussion of where the boundaries of the areas are, let me interject a thought. When the Republic joined the US the treaty gave Texas the right to divide into 5 seperate states. If we made the US honor the treaty, Where would the new states boundaries be and what would we call the states?????????? Charles L White
I live in North Central Texas, that Dallas, Forth Worth, Denton and surrounding areas. I am just northeast of Denton at Aubrey. Betty Gregston Redfearn
I am helping a cousin to find information on her grandmother Lydia or Leyda Owen(s). Her maiden name may have been Elmore. She married P.W. Owen (s) ca 1880-1881. She was thought to have been living in Fort Worh area or Wise county before marriage and in Lampasas county after marriage. Lydia & P.W. had two sons, Edgar Owen born 1882 and Joseph born in 1884.. I would appreciate any information or leads. Wanda wrtracy@juno.com

So I think we would have Texas 1, Texas 2, Texas 3, ---- I imagine they would all want the appellation Texas 1, so someone from each new Texas would have to be available to draw straws!
