    3. I need information on John Browns. John R Brown, son of John F. Brown, was born in Jefferson Co. MS, but his father died before he was born, & his mother took him to Hempstead Co. Arkansas when he was very young. He lived there until about 1870 when he came to Navarro Co. TX with his mother & her second family, McCanlies. He had married in AR, and had two children, Molly S.(1867) and JOHN F Brown (b 1869). and I have found the children in the homes of McCanlies relatives in 1870(Navarro Co.) and 1880 (Shackleford Co.) but do not know any more. I would be so pleased to learn any more about this half-brother & half-sister to my great grandfather....Family stories say that Mollie married a Hightower, but I have found no record. Linda Sykes

    2. The Rusk Co. History books have so much on the different Brown families in Rusk Co. Both book one and Book two. Most libraries have these books on their shelves, and I have found out much about the family in this way. I do not live far from the Brown Cemetery, and I live on land once owned by Elizabeth Brown Melton, the sister of Taylor Brown, so that is why I have interest in this family. As soon as I have time I am going to trace down the names that some of you have listed in your Brown queries, and see if I can match any of these names to the articles in the Rusk Co. Books. If I do, I will be back on line. Caroleen Dorsey Williams

    2. Shelley Brown
    3. Hi all !! I recently found a John F Brown on a cemetery list for Brown Cemetery in Rusk Co. Does anyone know who this John F Brown is? I am researching Brown/Gentry/Dukes/ Guthrie in Panola Co., but know that the Brown line originated its Texas roots in Rusk, and Hill County. This John Brown( in the Brown cemetery) was born in 1840, and died in 1870, and could have been the father of Marrion Jefferson Brown-my husbands g grandfather- don't know the names of all the other siblings yet. Could this Rusk co John Brown, be the John Brown connected to this family? H-E-L-P !!!! Thank you for any help offered, Shelley Brown

    1. Re: JOHN F BROWN
    2. Hi, Shelley: I don't know who this John F. BROWN is, but since I noticed that your husband's grandfather's name was Marion Jefferson BROWN, I just had to email you. There seemed to have been several BROWN families around, but my connections were from a Jefferson Green BROWN. His father was Thomas BROWN. Jefferson's brother was Columbus W. BROWN. My Jefferson had some sort of connection to a Love T. BROWN as he was the administrator of their estate (which did not mention any relationship). Jefferson and Columbus also gave their Power of Attorney to someone to handle a transaction related to a Francis E. BROWN (I also do not know his relationship -- if any -- to them). All of these legal transactions took place in Cherokee County, TX, one in 1849 and not sure of the other date. I know that Jefferson was in Fayette Co., TX, by 1861, as he was the administrator of his father, Thomas BROWN's, estate, who were both residents of that same county. While doing some research for Cherokee Co., I also ran across a Jefferson P. BROWN, and do not know if he was connected in any way to my BROWNs. Do any of these names sound familiar? Lana LeCROY

    1. Sam Rayburn not Ray Roberts!
    2. Dear Friends, It has been called to my attention that I have been away from East Texas Piney Woods too long!!!!! Thirty-five years!!!! The lake I meant was Sam Rayburn as you all probably know. My sister lives almost on the banks of it in Etoile. In my excitment of reading about the Piney Woods, I definitely had a Senior Moment. I now live close to Ray Roberts lake here in the Aubrey-Pilot Point Area of Denton County where there is nothing but a few scrubs and oak trees unless you plant a tree yourself. I guess you know that my yard is full of pine trees transplanted from you know where. Betty Gregston Redfearn

    1. Moore-White 1830s on Shelby & Nacogdoches
    2. Pam Phillips
    3. Dear East-Texas-Rooters, My gg-grandfather, Asa Moore, was born 1815 in NC. He said in the 1867 Voter Registration that he had been in Nacogdoches county, TX for 25 years, which would make it ca 1842. His name is on the tax list in 1846 and thenceforward he was an active citizen of Nacogdoches County. He died in 1890. He married Elizabeth B. WHITE on 9 September 1945. Elizabeth came from the Joseph WHITE family of Anson Co, NC. Members of this large family, including Elizabeth's father, Joel White and mother Sarah, migrated to Perry Co, TN in the early 1820s and Elizabeth was born ca 1826-28. They may have gone to MS briefly, but by the late 1830s, this family was living in Shelby County, TX. We think the Joel White who had land in Shelby Co was Elizabeth's brother, and that her father Joel White died in TN, but it is somewhat confusing. I would love to put my head together with any descendants of this family. I have the feeling Elizabeth had siblings we don't even know about. One that we do know about was Sarah Jane White who married Asa YARBOROUGH. I have a little bit of info about them. Another sibling was probably Wiley G. WHITE who was married to Mary Ann ?? but divorced in Nacogdoches in 1851. Elizabeth also had a brother, Joel, Jr. and another brother, Joseph White. Joel and Joseph may have been twins. By 1850, Asa Moore and Elizabeth White Moore were living in the northeastern part of Nacogdoches County near Cedar Point. They had a couple of daughters of their own (ultimately they had 11 children -- see the web site for details), and were also raising a child of unknown parentage. His name was Clem Benton White Moore or C.B. (White) Moore. Clem was born in TN ca 1842. He was a CSA veteran, lived in Williamson Co, TX in 1870, moved to Lampasas Co, then to OK. Would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about Clem's parentage. Another person, Richard WALLING was also living with Asa Moore and Elizabeth on the 1850 census. Was he related at all or just a young farm hand? Who can tell me more? After 1860, Asa Moore and family moved south of Nacogdoches to the community eventually known as Press. It is also sometimes called Mt. Horeb. Eventually, Asa Moore owned over 2000 acres that had originally been the Pedro Esparza grant, and his descendants still own much of that land. Asa Moore also owned land and buildings on the square in Nacogdoches, and I have been told also owned land from New Caney to Corsicana. I know after he died his son Sterling was paying taxes on some land in Van Zandt Co, TX. Asa Moore was an active member of Nacogdoches' historic Milam Lodge #2. We have wondered, though, did he belong to a different lodge, perhaps Chireno or Melrose, or a lodge in Shelby County? Does his name ring any bells with anyone? Recently, I have heard a story from two different people that Asa Moore had been married prior to marrying Elizabeth White and that there were a couple of children from that prior marriage living down around Port Lavaca. I have no names, no dates, no nothing. Does anybody have anything, any clue to help me from going nuts? I have also been told that Asa Moore was somehow kin to "the Moores that were at San Jacinto (i.e., the Battle). More hair-tearing time. Any clues to help me keep my sanity? I have created a web site where I have attempted to put the information I have about Asa and Elizabeth Moore and their children in some kind of logical, genealogical order. There are pictures, and the pages from his bible have been uploaded. Please check it out at http://www.webnac.com/asamoore and let me know if you connect or have any information to add. He had loads of descendants. I know some of you. Any others who are online, please let me know about you. Thanks to everyone for bearing with me. Sincerely, Pam Phillips Email: webpsalms@iname.com

    2. Joan and Huie Landrum
    3. This is a shot in the dark. My gr grandparents were Nehemiah and Tabatha Pitts. they lived in the Harmany community southwest of Nacogdoches. They were married in 1879 in Nacogdoches Co. I have much information on the Pitts family but have been unable to find anything on Tabatha. One marrage list named her Mrs Tabatha Caldwell which was an indication that she was a widow. She was 31 at the time of the marrage. She stated on the census [1900 I believe] That she had had 5 children, all living. These were the children of Nehemiah so she had no children prior to their marrage. Any help on her parents or other information would be a blessing. Huie Landrum
