    1. Did Your Family's Slaves Stay or Go?
    2. After emancipation, did the slaves that your ancestors previously owned stay on working at the plantations or did the former slaves leave, never to be heard from again? Any ideas as to where they moved? What notes or stories can you pass along, in this regard? Would like to know if your family's slaves moved into the northeast Texas areas of Cass or Marion County? Most grateful for contact with researchers who's ancestors owned slaves in Cass and Marion Co., TX. Asking you to share the name of slaves as found in your family documents such as wills, deeds, diaries, tax records, as well as, any notes or stories you care to pass along. Can anyone come forward with abit of help? 3. Nicole Flournoy, Re your John Wesley Bowers, born in GA who came over from Ireland on the good ship SS Cleopatria. Must have been in his mother's womb? Where is the Old Prospect Cemetery? Gene Tannery oetannery@mcia.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <StarFan864@aol.com> To: <EAST-TEXAS-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2000 7:36 AM Subject: Bowers came from Ireland? > I am trying to do some research on the Bowers famiy of East Texas. The rumor is that John Wesley Bowers (b. 1819 in GA, d. 1899 in TX, bur. Old Prospect Cemetery) came from Ireland on a ship named the Cleopatria. From this his son Patrick Henry Bowers (B. 1871 In FL, d. 1955 in TX, bur. Old Prospect Cemetery, mar. Mary Ella Lunsford) named one of his 12 children Cleopatria. I have searched the internet trying to locate a ship named the Cloepatria. Does anyone know anything that might back this story up or can can anyone point me in another direction to look. I have continued to search ship records over the internet, but haven't had much luck. > > Thanks > Nicole Flournoy > >

    1. Birth Certificates
    2. There is no year that should be discounted for missing birth certificates. I was born in 1950. Until I tried to apply for a passport in the 1980s, no one in my family had any idea that I had no birth certificate other than a doctor's certificate. The hospital, county, city and state didn't have any record of me being born. It took my mom a couple of months, a lot of paperwork effort and finally "a fit" to get the government to acknowledge I existed and record a delayed certificate. There are always ways and time to slip through the cracks. ______________________________________________________________________ FlexChoice System a new approach to immune health & joint wellness. 1. Birth Certificates in Texas
    2. I can certainly vouch for the fact that you could be born later than 1903 in Texas and still not have a birth certificate. Apparently the system then was that if you were born at home the attending physician reported the birth. My older brothers, born 1919 and 1920 had birth certificates. I was born 1927 and there was no official record. I used to have rueful thoughts that maybe the doctor didn't think girls worth reporting. My parents were alive when I got my delayed birth certificate, but I think I recall that the form I had to fill out required the affirmation of someone who had no family interest (doctor, midwife, friend, neighbor etc.) I think what caused citizens and county officials to get serious about keeping records was the beginning of Social Security (1935, right?). There still were cracks to fall through. My maternal grandmother who died in 1940 did not have a death certificate. Also, the funeral home was out of business by the time I began to look. However, the old trunk had the bill from the undertaker marked "paid." That (plus the grave marker) was my proof. When I see questions in the genealogy lists such as "Where can I get a birth certificate for my great-grandfather born in 1850?", I always say to myself, "Someone very young." CWBrazell@aol.com

    1. Bowers came from Ireland?
    2. Thanks Nicole Flournoy

    1. Epidemic..birth records
    2. Louise Kohl
    3. Hello Everyone, This message interested me, since my own mother and my great aunt born in 1912 never had a birth certificate or thought they had one either. It was not until my mother passed over did I find a delayed certificates had been issued. Both of her parents were deceased. My uncle applied for the certificates for both and told me that he had to find a person to swear that they were aware when the births occurred, that they knew the parents and were living close by. Then it was issued. Louise Kohl *********** REPLY SEPARATOR ***********

    2. Virgil L. (Dick) Du Val
    3. Hello Paula White and all others who depend on the following, IT JEST AINT SO. I was born in Texas on a farm between Burkburnett and Clara the 8th of November either in 1920 or 1921 depending on whether you believe my Father or my Mother. I never had a Birth Certificate until I had a delayed one made a few years ago. My Sister was born in Dundee 12th of June 1923-25 again whether you believe my two parents. My Sister couldn't even get a delayed birth certificate made because she waited until after both our parents were dead to make the attempt. So don't believe that you aren't really alive or weren't born in Texas because you can't get a birth certificate after 1903. For the record: I was born Virgil Lee HOLLEY to Mattie Alice WILLS and James Brady HOLLEY. Also for the record they were both born in Texas and neither have Birth Certificates but they were born before 1903. At least I have found their marriage license. My two cents! Dick At http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/bvs/registra/certcop.htm#request you will find (among other info): "Certified copies of birth and death records are available at the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics. Birth and Death Records are available from 1903 to the present. However,
