    1. BUMSTEAD Cemetary in Fletcher
    2. Tom Cloud
    3. The arched gateway with the BUMSTEAD name is gone from the Bumstead Cemetary in Fletcher. Does anyone know where it went? Also, who is the caretaker for it? George Mitchell, son of Morad Bumstead, used to care for it, but he died in 1984 and I'd like to know who is in charge of its care now. George and my grandmother, Jessie (Wiess) Whittington, and some others got together the money to buy back the land the cemetary is on from whoever got custody of it many years ago, but they are all gone now, and I'd like to know the ownership of it and (like I said) how it's cared for. Does anyone know more about the details of who was in the group that bought it, who they bought it from, why, etc?? If anyone is in that area (Lumberton/Fletcher) and could research the deed records, I'd appreciate it. Also, what are the rules concerning private cemetaries? Do taxes have to be paid on private cemetaries in Texas? How are burials in them regulated? Thanks, Tom Cloud <cloud@peaches.ph.utexas.edu>

    3. On June 16, I sent this to East Texas Roots and Texahoma ... it didn't make it because dumb me probably didn't read his mail adequately and failed to change the addresses ... ============================================================== Finally took some time off and spent this past weekend seeking my roots and kin in East Texas. Went to Woodville, where we visited with cousin Ben Bythewood and then on to Fletcher (now Lumberton) and finally to Port Arthur (my birthplace). Previously, cousin Jim and Mannes Bumstead had found my web page on the Parsons site http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/tcloud/Cloud.htm and, last Thursday, they drove from San Antonio here to Austin to visit my mother, wife and me. Turns out we are all cousins of some degree or another, my g-grandmother being Dora BUMSTEAD who married William Simon WIESS II (William Simon 1st being the tax collector at Houston under General Sam Houston) and Ben BYTHEWOOD being descended from Dora Bumstead's sister, Ella. We visited the BUMSTEAD Cemetary in Fletcher and photographed the graves of my grandparents and great grandparents Dora and William S. WIESS(Dora BUMSTEAD being the daughter of Morad Whitfield BUMSTEAD who came from Long Island, New York to fight at the Alamo but, alas, was too late). The visit to East Texas was pleasant, hot and humid. Saw no dragon flies or alligators, and only one stand of cattails. Also saw very few mosquitoes. Still glad I live in a dryer, though just as hot, part of the state now ;-) - Please visit the Parsons' web site above and view my genealogy and tell me if we are cousins. 1. Riley family
    2. Alanna Michelle Riley
    3. I am looking for my great-great grandparents. My GGgrandfather was Samuel Richard RILEY, born ca. 1861 in Alabama; place, exact date, and parents unknown. His wife was Mary Virginia FLOYD RILEY, born December 13, 1868, in LA; place and parents unknown. Samuel's birth information comes from the 1900 Upshur Co. census; the only one that I have found with him on it. Mary Virginia's information comes from the 1900 Upshur Co. census, and the 1920 Harris Co. census, and her death certificate. This family disappears between 1900 and 1920, although I am sure that they were in the East Texas area. Of their children, all but 4 disappeared also. I know nothing about their lives prior to the 1900 census, save for family legend. These family stories, told by my great-great uncle, Harold Riley, to an oral historian in the 1960s, state that his maternal grandfather, a "hard-headed Irishman", lost his lands in LA due to a feud over cattle, in which he killed several people. This is all I know about the FLOYDS. About the RILEYS, I know nothing. I do have a photograph of six men and five women, with a few children, dated May, 1861, that is supposed to be the RILEY family in AL. One of these men looks exactly like my father, but there are no names on the back of the photo, just the date. Here is what little concrete information that I have: Children of Samuel Richard Riley and Mary Virginia "Jennie" Floyd: 1. Miranda M. (son) Found only on 1900 Upshur census; no one in the family had ever heard of him, and had assumed that my great-grandfather, Carter Richard, was the eldest child. Presumed dead before 1910. Born 1889, TX 2. Carter Richard. Born January 4, 1891, Bowie Co. TX teamster, mule skinner, log truck driver. Eventually owned own logging operation in Tyler CO. Worked throughout E.TX area. Married Mattie Louise DeWitz, daughter of Robert DeWitz and Jennie West of Appleby, Nacogdoches County, TX, November 11, 1910. Had 10 children, all born in Nacogdoches Co (1st 3),Polk Co (middle 3), or Tyler Co. (last 4). Died December 23, 1940, in a logtruck accident on Hwy. 40, Colmesneil, Tyler County,TX. Buried Mt. Hope Cemetary, Chester, Tyler Co. TX. Wife Mattie died July 13, 1967, in Woodville, Tyler Co, TX, and is buried next to him. 3. Mamie. Nothing known. Found only in 1900 census. Family says that she and her sister, Clida, married in Nacogdoches in early 1900s, but died young. This has not been confirmed; Nacogdoches Co. will not let you search death records. Marriage records have not been found. 4. Clida. Nothing known. Found 1900 census. see above 5. Altha Jewell. Nothing known. Found 1900 census. Supposedly died in childbirth,Polk Co, but again, nothing is known. 6. Howard. Born January 29, 1903. Died November 14, 1912. Buried Cold Springs Cemetery, Garrison, Nacogdoches Co. TX. Died of pneumonia. Only record existing is death record. Tombstone says "Son of S.R. and M.V. Riley, with dates) 7. S.R. "Doc". Born ca. 1908 in Nacogdoches. Lived in Houston most of life. Found in 1920 census, Harris Co, living with his mother and brother, Harold, on Washington Avenue. Worked in textile mill with mom. Married, and had 1 child. Died in 1996, in Ozark, Dale Co, AL. Buried Liberty Hill Cemetary,Tyler, Smith Co, TX 8. Harold. Born ca. 1910 in Nacogdoches. Spent most of life in Houston. Found 1920 census with brother and mom. Married Roxie Phillips and had several children, including triplets and two sets of twins. The triplets weighed over 9 lbs each at birth. Married 2nd. Anna. Held patents for mechanical inventions. Died in late 1970s, Houston. 1900 Upshur census says that 3 children had been born to the Riley family that were no longer living. Mary Virginia "Jennie" Floyd RILEY is found in the 1920 Harris County census, living on Washington Avenue, with two children, S.R. and Harold, as well as a boarder, Will Marks. She worked in a textile mill. She is listed as a widow. Nothing is known about Samuel Richard Riley; he is not found after 1900, nor before. His death date, place, and place of burial are unknown. He was a "mean man" according to every story. Mary Virginia Riley died March 16, 1922, and was buried the next day in Washington Cemetery, Houston, Harris Co, TX. She died of pneumonia, complicated by influenza. She also had pellagra. I hope that someone will be able to help me find this family. Thanks for your help! Alanna Riley P.O. 2. OK, I am at that brick wall and I need help getting over it. I am looking for the wife of Norris Foster, son of Norris and Becky Foster, born 1825 in Mississippi. the Fosters moved to Walker County from Louisiana about 1838-40. The younger Norris married between 1850 and 1860 and he and hiw wife had four little girls. His wife was dead by 1860, therefore not listed on census, and he died shortly thereafter. Who was his wife, mother of the little girls, one of whom became my great-grndmother?

    1. Laura FLEMING Dodson
    2. Meyer Family
    3. For years I have searching for the family of my great-grandmother, Laura FLEMING Dodson. She was born 19 Jan 1854 in Texas. Her son's birth certificate says she was born in Rusk County, but it was a delayed birth certificate filed when he was 59 years old, so that might be in error. She married Louis (Luke) DODSON in 1882, place unknown. Their first child, Effie Lewis DOTSON, was born 1 Jun 1884, but died 2 years later on 17 Nov 1886 in Henderson, Rusk Co., TX and is buried there. One month later my grandfather was born on 13 Dec 1886 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches Co., TX (another error?). When he was 8 years old, his mother Laura FLEMING Dodson died on 28 Jul 1894 in Henderson, Rusk Co., TX and is buried there. Since she died when he was young, no one seems to know anything about her family. I have been contacted by someone who thinks she may be Laura FLEMING, the daughter of Laird Beatty FLEMING and Mary HICKS. According to her, Laird B. FLEMING and family moved to Panola Co., TX in 1852 or 1853 and Laura was born about then. (My Laura was born in Jan 1854.) If anyone can shed more light on this family and has information that can prove that the two Lauras are the same, I would appreciate it. Charlotte M. 1. Official-Montgomery County
    2. There was a very good article in this mornings Conroe Courier. "STATE LAW MAKES IT OFFICIAL; COUNTY IS HOME OF TEXAS FLAG" The culminations of years of local efforts to have the county recognized as the birthplace of the state flag beame reality on May 30, when Gov. George Bush sined House Resolution 1123, enrolling the bill in House Dockets, authored by State Rep. Robert Rabuck, R-Conroe. County Judge Alan B. Sadler said the event is the most significant historical aspect of Montgomery County--the third oldest county in Texas. The historical commission of Conroe and Montgomery have done an excellent job of bringing out the historical significance of this county. 1. Alice Johnnie Roann Walker dau of Robert & Janie Hathorn Walker AL>TX
    2. Hi Group, Here's another East Tx Walker and descendents, prob. not mine, but maybe will help someone. 1860, Janie Hathorn Walker and children Alice Johnnie Roann and William moved from Al to TX by boat to Galveston, to meet Janie's husband, Robert WAlker. After waiting 3 months (apparently Robert never showed up), they took another boat up the Trinity River to Onalaska, Polk Co., TX. Where they settled and stayed for 9 years. She sold the land in 1869 and moved to Little Rock Ark, where her brother lived. On the way to ARk, in Houston Co. Alice met James Luce. He followed her to Ark, where they married, then Alice and James returned to Houston Co. and settled a claim near Cachine Creek. They had children Salathiel, Fratus, Mattie, Sarah Jane, Meddie and Vernie. James died of pneumonia in 1889, Hagersville, Tx. Alice later moved to Trinity Co, Tx where she died in 1935, and is buried in Ivy Cemetery in Houston County, TX> In the meantime, Janie left ARK with her family and her brother and his family where they returned to TX and settled near Caney Creek in Trinity co. I don't believe this is part of my elusive Walker families, but who knows. If this connects for someone, I have more information. Wonder what ever happened to Robert? Sandy
