    1. A good book about Irish settlers in the South
    2. For those of you with Irish-Scottish ancestors who settled in the South prior to the Civil War and want to know more about the culture of your ancestors, I would like to recommend to you the following book: Cracher Culture, Celtic Ways in the Old South written by Grady McWhiney, Professor of American History, Texas Christian Univ. The Univ. of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa Al. ISBN 0-8173-0458-4 If you have wondered about the ways of your Celtic ancestors, you will find the answer in this very well written and enjoyable book. It will also explain a lot about the Civil War and the bitterness that existed between the Yankees and the Southerner's. J Pat Smith Denham Springs, LA. 1. MIKE BASHAM IN NACOGDOCHES 7/15
    2. Pam Phillips
    3. Hello, Everyone! Mike Basham, state coordinator for the TXGenweb Project has just told me that he will be in Nacogdoches on Tuesday night and will give the program at our CIG (Computer Interest Group) meeting! Mike is a *great* speaker (so everyone has told me) and we are *very* excited that he is coming. I'd like to have a great turn-out, so anyone who gets this who is a member of the CIG (we do not really have "members") but if you have come or have thought about coming, Tuesday night is the time! You do NOT have to be a member of the Nacogdoches Genealogical Society. The meeting is free and open to the public (anyone interested in the topic of computers and genealogy is welcome). So, if you are within driving distance fo Nacogdoches, come on down, over, up or out to this meeting. It will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 211 E. Hospital St. Hospital St. is one block north of Main Street. You can see the church from North St (business 59) the main street that goes north and south through town. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and we meet in the Parlor Room. We will have signs and people around to help you find it. I have been so proud of Nacogdoches for having a CIG, and we have had between 15-22 people coming to our meetings. Mike Basham has been quite helpful to Peggy Price and me in getting the CIG started. It will be a great opportunity for those of us in Nacogdoches and surrounding areas who may not have had the chance to get to Dallas, to get to hear Mike speak and ask him questions. Any questions, email me at webpsalms@iname.com. Please spread the word and plan to be there if you possibly can. Sincerely, Pam Phillips webpsalms@iname.com V.P. 3. I was about to quit this board, but wasn't supposed to until I saw your note. I am not researching Tillmans but I saw enough of them today to do me in. They were in Franklin Co., GA I believe. I was working with the Hancocks in that area. Then I was in some early GA marriages before 1800 and there were a lot there. There were so many that I noticed as there were so few of our Holts and Hancock names. Good luck. I was at the FHL in Salt Lake City. 2. I too am a des. of the Crain family. My line follows Joel to his daughter Mildred who married Jesse Burditt, -- their daughter Martha Elizabeth m. Andrew Davidson -- my great grandmother is Martha Davidson Beam (d. of Martha Elizabeth and Andrew). I have been doing extensive research for the past eight years and have compiled extensive files also. I would be most interested in purchesing the book. I believe that my friend, Michael Mason, in Denver (also a Crain des.) mentioned that someone was writing a book last year. It would seem if a book was written and published, that the author would want to share the information and sell copies, so here I am -- a willing buyer but need price, where to send check, etc. Thanks much. I would be glad to share any information I have regarding the Crain family with you.

    1. Crain Family History "Five Links"
    2. My father recently purchased this newly published (1996) book written by his third cousin. It is absolutely wonderful- 672 pages. It is primarily centered on the descendants of Ambrose and Elizabeth Crain of Granville Co, NC, their son Stephen, his son Joel, his son, William and his son Stephen Albert. It covers 1700's to present, from NC>TN>GA>MS>AR>TX, has a number of wills, documents and pictures. I especially like this book because it validates nearly all my research. I found a some details needed corrections and bunches of new details, but the big picture is right on target. I would be willing to do lookups if needed and will help anyone considering a purchase to contact the author. I haven't asked his consent to broadcast his address and name and he is not on the internet. Melinda (Crain) Tillman

    3. great grandpa Bill (William Lafayette CLOUD) had two wives and I can't find my grandfather's half-siblings nor their kin. ========================== Jeremiah CLOUD (b. 1782, d. 1861) (GA, AL, TX) ========================== William Jasper CLOUD (b. 1825, d. 1871 (AL, TX) ========================== William Lafayette CLOUD (b. 1849, d. 1917) (AL, TX, OK) ======= marriages ====== m1 Nancy Elizabeth RUTHERFORD m2 Margaret GREENBACK or SKIPPER ======= children ======= | Nancy CLOUD MURRAY | Mary CLOUD HOPGOOD | (child: Calvin HOPGOOD) | William Jasper CLOUD | John CLOUD | Thomas Marion CLOUD | Alice CLOUD | Jake Washington CLOUD | | ========================== ========================== Specifically, I'm looking for information on his marriage to Margaret GREENBACK or SKIPPER (or ????) and his progeny by that wife. As the story (legend ??) goes, grandpa Bill married his first wife, Nancy, in Texas, probably in Milam County. It was also there where he left her for the "other woman" who is said to have only been twelve years old. Nancy supposedly left and took my grandfather Jake, still an infant, to Florida, where she "married a Wilson". Bill subsequently moved to Oklahoma, probably near Ada, and started a gin. When Jake was ten, he ran away from his stepfather Wilson and wandered across Florida to Texas and then to Oklahoma, until he was eighteen, before finding his father in Ada. This second union is so obscure, that John Cloud lived and taught school in Konowa, Oklahoma alongside his kin from his father's first marriage and apparently only a few knew the relationship. (I recently traveled to Konowa and was told about John, it being explained that he was a "CLOUD", but was no kin. Boy, were they surprised! 8^) Also, Calvin HOPGOOD grew up there in Konowa and played with his Uncle Jake's kids (my father and his siblings). Tom Cloud <cloud@peaches.ph.utexas.edu>
