Pam, If your family grew up in Trinity County, TX you should try the book "Trinity County Beginnings". It is one of the best "family story" books I've ever seen. Probably any book seller that deals with history could get it for you, but I ordered mine from Boyd Publishing over the internet. They were wonderful to deal with! Her web site is: http://www.hom.net/~gac/ What are some of your names.... I'll look in my copy of the book for you! Amy McCroskie Denver, CO

I'm glad you had that feeling about the book. Did you also get a family portrait of their family in with the advertisement about the book. I have got them before and I throw them out. Its funny how they can have one last surname and then send the same picture to our relative and have still have another surname. ha ----- Original Message ----- From: pam serda <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 1999 9:20 PM Subject: Re: Halbert Books > Hello Everyone, > > I want to thank everyone for the response to my post > about these books. Hello Everyone, I want to thank everyone for the response to my post about these books. I have not, or never intended to order these. I had one of those 'gut' feelings about them!!! What I really was looking for is a book that cited legitimate family histories, especially from this area, as sort of an accompaniment to what I am learning about my families. At this point, I know virtually nothing about my fathers family, except for names, dates of birth, dates of death, where they were born & where they died. I think that to have just a short story, about what they did, and "who" they were, or what they cared about would make them seem like such a "real" person, much more a part of the family. OOOOOPS!!! I didn't mean to get on the "soapbox". Pam --- Jerry & Judy Smith <[email protected]> wrote: > Yes, Amy... > You are right about the older folks "wanting to > help". My Mom got stuck with not one, but TWO of these books...Forgot she ordered one previously....they are only telephone directories and not even current ones at that...definitely NOT worth the money..You can get the same information on the Internet for FREE! Just my 2 cents worth too...Thanks, Judy nks, Judy
If interested, I found some FARRISes at Concord Cemetery in Concord, TX Jim FAIRES

Hello: Does anyone have a listing of graves at the Craft Cemetery in Craft Texas?? Thanks Cynde
Go to any telephone directory web page, type in Overstreet. The information you receive will be more current that the information in the "Halbert" books and will be much cheaper. You are very good to warn other listers about these books! But $35.00 would be a great bargin! My Dad (age 412) got hit for $65.00! It's very tempting especially for Senior Citizen family members that want to help you by purchasing these books. They are absolutely nothing more than telephone listings of surnames all over the country! Scares me to think people are spending their hard-earned money on these things! Especially the older folks! This Company has been around for at least 20 years that I. Know of, they get closed down under one name and open up in another. Gladys
Additions and corrections to my earlier query. I no longer need information on Aaron Muckleroy. I found him by reviewing Carolyn Ericson's Nacogdoches -- Gatweay to Texas that Aaron (Mulatto) - - b. ca 1856 Texas, married Sarah Atkins 21 December 1875, grandson of Mary B. Garrett, b. ca. 1820. 1870 census, farmer, 1880 census. Children: Sally b. ca 1877, Bunch, b. ca 1878, Ellis, b. ca 1880. I am still trying to figure who J. S. Muckleroy's family is. I found him in the Murrie Marriage Record book. 22 November 1876 J. S. Muckleroy to Emma Meeks, Officant R. A. Hargis Also on page 78 of Carolyn Ericson's 1880 Census - Probably around Melrose J. S. Muckleroy 26 M W Farmer TX Emma (Meeks) Wife 26 F W TX Roy Son 3 M W TX Emma and Mary E. who married John Muckleroy were sisters, daughters of Isaac and Jane Meeks. Can't find J. S. and Emma in 1900. 28 Oct 1868 John Muckleroy to Mary E. Meeks, Officiant J. S. Lambert Note from Betty: Son of David and Rebecca Boozer Muckleroy - Included to help with J. S. & Emma. I still need: 9 Mar 1864 J. Y Butcher to Mrs. M. L. McLeroy, M. B. Fuller Officiant Note by Betty: There was a branch of the Muckleroy family who spelled their name McLeroy living in Shelby Co. Betty
I just rec'd a Halberts Book on my surname that was sent to me from my great Uncle in Texas on Durhams... It just list a bunch of Durhams that are alive and (any one can get from any telephone book) and who knows if the history is correct. It is not worth the $35.00 that is charged !! Be Very WARY of this book I have heard that the Halberts has been cited by the Postalservice, under orders from a Federal court to, "cease & desist" a number of times.
Thanks for all the advise! I'm really glad that I asked for it. I ditched the whole idea, and won't even waste my time on that subject anymore!!!
